MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)

Hello everyone!! 😅
I am also applying for Mext scholarship next year!
But, I am having a problem sending the documents with the letter of acceptance to each of these universities:
Kyoto university
Waseda university
Toyo university (especially)

it seems like I can't find the e-mail of Toyo university :( it will be nice if someone can help me...please:cry:
Try looking for the Admissions website of your desired Graduate School in those universities. In my case, I've also sent my documents to Waseda, you have to send everything through mail, I would recommend using either DHL, Fedex or that kind of express services, as you can track whenever the package reaches their hands (It's unlikely they'll give you any notification of reception of your documents).

Thank you very much for replying!! I will try as you said 😅
I will be grateful to you if you helped me find out how to contact Toyo university because I've tried to look at their webside and I didn't find anything that will help me send my documents to them :(
Here is the link of their website just in case you're helping me TOYO UNIVERSITY
But even though thank you very much

Hey there Riko,

I found an email address on an "Students Exchange Program for 2015" brochure, it is the email address of the Center of Global Education and Exchange of Toyo University, so maybe they'll be of help for the application to obtain the Letter of Acceptance for the MEXT Scholarship. I have sent you a PM with the address. Sometimes you have to look for any (unfortunately) unrelated addresses that might help you get in contact with the MEXT team in that university and then finally begin your application there hehehe.

Thank you Kamuizeo 😅 You've been a great help
Sorry for the trouble ;)

Finally received my first LoA from Kyodai, today. I feel so relieved now ... 😅
Still waiting the other two from Todai and TMU.

Update on my search for my letters of acceptance:

I've got one from my 3rd choice.
The professor from Kyoto Uni. who was my 2nd choice said his lab was full so that's out.
I've got an interview with my 1st choice professor from the Tokyo Institute of Tech. in two days, although I'm not really sure what to expect.

Hey, good luck for the interview!

Nice! Which dept. is the interview for at Tokyo Tech?
I'm going to ChemE at Tokyo Tech next month :-)
My interview was on Skype, about 45 mins long. I presented my masters thesis research, then discussed my proposal for PhD research, then had general discussion about plan for living there, learning Japanese, etc.
Good luck!

Wow, I don't know if there's even an interview for research student candidates. Good luck with your interview! 👍

Anyone have any updates?
I've got the letter from my first choice - meanwhile Keio and Tsukuba are presently reviewing my papers. Was lucky to find a great academic at Tsukuba who wants to consider me sort of last minute. Makes a better and more likely backup than Keio once you consider all the circumstances unique to private universities (mainly the high cost and general unwillingness of MEXT to place you there if they don't have to).

How is everyone else coming? Did the Indians hear back yet?

I got LoA from Tohoku while Kyoto and Tsukuba have yet to reply with LoA but I am expecting the LoAs to arrive next week since most of the Unis were having 1 week summer holidays last week.

My professor from TMU (3rd choice) sent the LoA yesterday. Hence, I've obtained 2 LoAs from Kyodai and TMU. For Todai however, I have to wait until Sep 15 when they officially announce the result.

Computer Science, thanks for the information about the interview.

I'm really bummed out right now though, my 3rd choice agreed to take me two days ago but then today suddenly sent me an e-mail saying he changed his mind...

I guess this means if I don't get one from Tokyo Tech. I'm missing out on the scholarship?

So I've got a letter of acceptance from Tokyo Tech., my first choice, but still trying to get two others.
Are we pretty much guaranteed to get the scholarship as long as we get one letter of acceptance?
Also say we get more than one, are we likely to get our top choice?

Hi,

It's nothiing "official", but the consensus seems to be that MEXT will only contact your 2nd or 3rd choice if a) your 1st choice changes their mind and retracts their offer or b) your 1st choice is a private university and MEXT has used up their "private university" spots for that year.

So getting another LoA should not lessen your chance of getting into Tokyo Tech. But it could increase your chance of getting to Japan.

I totally agree with @madphysicist, that's why it's important to think about your priorities when choosing your desired universities. I would suggest you to try to obtain the other Letters of Acceptance, they will increase your chance of successfully receiving the MEXT scholarship in the end.

That's what happened to me. I could've gotten 5-6 LoA's so it was hard choosing the top 3. I had a private university as my #1 choice (that prof was the main reason I wanted to study in Japan), but MEXT literally only contacted my #2 choice (public university) and not the others. It all worked out, I really like my advisor there and it's gonna be great. But still, just so you know ;)

Interesting - you are certain the private uni was NOT contacted at all?

I suppose this only further confirms our musings about MEXT's tendencies during this stage of the selection/placement process.

You getting ready to go? Got your flight yet?

Yes, I was able to confirm that MEXT did not contact anyone from the other two (#1 was pivate, #3 was national). They didn't contact the professors or respective departments, administrative offices, admission offices, international student offices, etc. They only contacted my professor at the #2 (national) university. However, I do know at least two people who were placed at Waseda and Keio this year, so it is possible. I just don't understand the rationale they use.

And yep, I'm getting to fly in 29 days...super excited! :-)

Those placed at privates listed no other schools?

I'm interested in learning about this process even though my first and second choices are national unis... lol

Hi,
Could you share your opinions regarding choosing between Kyushu University or University of Tsukuba?
...
I have only recently learned about Tsukuba University and my knowledge is specific only to the humanities departments...

However, Kyushu University is in a location that is near and dear to my heart. That region is my favourite and has always been somewhere I wanted to live again long-term since I lived in Nagasaki from 2010-2. Fukuoka is a great city and great prefecture with amazing food culture and a really lively and outgoing population of young people. The rest of Kyushu is also amazing with beautiful landscapes (more volcanic mountains in the south) and incredible regional communities and cultures.

Tonkotsu ramen is the best! Shouchuu is better than sake! Hakata-ben is the coolest dialect! I am a Kyushu lover through and through.

Hi guys,
What do you think the chances that MEXT would place two or more applicants from the same country at the same university?

Not impossible. Myself and another American guy on here, we're both going to Tokyo Tech next month. Different departments, though (me - ChemEng, him - Earthquake Eng).
