MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)

Why not try other universities in Tokyo besides Todai since your priority is studying in Tokyo?

I would really like to do that if I able to find one that suits my research topic.

I searched Hokkaido , Tohoku, Keio, Nagoya, Kyoto , Ritsumeikan, Osaka, Kyushu , Toyaku, Waseda, Aoyama Gakuin, Tokai, Meiji, Sophia, Hosei, Hitotsubashi, Kokugakuin, Toyo, Seijo, Rikkyo, Takushoku, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo University of Science by visiting each of every one of their websites.

You can see that I was focusing on former imperial universities then turned desperately looking at universities in Tokyo even they seem impossible (lol) and revisit universities that seem more sensible to check. FYI, I used some search tool to search for related universities before I turned desperate haha. There must be some universities that I don't know they exist, I am using some other search tools to search again, hopefully will find something useful.

If you happen to know any university around Tokyo that I missed out, please point it out to me and I will check the website on my own :D

It seemed like you have checked a lot of universities. Your research must be unique that most universities are not into your research field. How about Tsukuba University (but this is located outside of Tokyo)?

Hello, I am not Kamuizero but I had been through similar struggle, although my second and third choices were national universities. After careful consideration and much thought, I decided to request an LoA from Todai only, because I am determined to go to university in Tokyo. I know such decision will drastically lower my chance of securing the scholarship, but I can foresee that studying in some city other than Tokyo is not what I really want.

I am also applying only to Todai because I really want to work with a professor there! Hope it goes well for the both of us...

Mind telling us what you first two choices were?

I am debating whether or not to pursue Keio and Waseda as second or third choices. I have a national university with a very vocal and involved supervisor lined up there - if my second and third were private unis of Keio/Waseda level, I seriously doubt they would do me any good beyond simply filling up the two lines on my placement form.

Thoughts?
My senior said that Keio won't really take applicants who put them as the second or third choice seriously. Speaking from her personal experience, that is. She put Keio as her second choice and she ended up not getting LoA from Keio. She only received LoA from her first and tthird choice; Tsukuba and Nagoya.

I am sending documents to Keio today and I will out them as my first choice on the preference form I provide them.

I have not yet been required by the embassy to submit a preference form yet so I can edit and change the one I send to any school. It has yet to be set in stone by the embassy stamp ;)

My update so far :

1st choice : Todai, after a complicated admission procedure, I've sent digital documents by email (on monday) and the hardcopy by DHL (on thursday). The office replied that the result will be sent by EMS on September 15. Unfortunately, that's the deadline for submitting the LoA to Japan embassy, thus, I sent another email to confirm if the LoA could be sent earlier. Still waiting for the reply from the office. I hope everything will be OK since Todai is my 1st choice :cold:

2nd choice : Kyodai, the professor asked me to send only the digital documents by email and he informed me that he will do the paperworks for LoA (he is very kind), then he will return the LoA after getting the seal from dean. Now, he's attending a conference outside Japan and I haven't get any news from him whether the LoA has been ready or not. Still waiting until the middle of August before I contacting him again for asking the status of the LoA :cautious:

3rd choice : TMU, the office only asked for scanned documents and they said me that the result will be informed later. The only thing troubles me is that they asked me to send the university preference form :nailbiting:. Since I put them to the 3rd choice, I guess they will reconsider providing me the LoA even though the professor is very nice to me.

I've never thought that getting an LoA will be so though, hence I would try several other universities for backup. Now I'm writing email to a professor at Tsukuba Univ .. :dead:

Hello,
Can someone help me? When they say research plan do they mean a two year plan for what you plan to do? Would they give you the topic?
I know its kind of personal but if someone's willing to share then how do you all write it up, i.e. it is something you had been wanting to do, google, you've done research before, you asked around etc etc

My embassy didn't require filling the placement preference form beforehand and when I told them that a University required me to send it, they told me that I shouldn't agree to send it to the University and should ask them why they need it. Truth is that they technically shouldn't be asking for it, but I don't want to cause a scene. Since it's not set in stone as you say, I may just change it for every University...

I will be applying for the scholarship next year. I'm a student of mechanical engineering in Nigeria. I want to have my master's degree in robotics / mechatronics in either Nagoya University / Tohoku University / Tokyo Metropolitan University. Please I really need your advise. Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, "research student" is a way to differentiate from undergraduate and japanese studies scholarships. You can enroll in a PhD after being accepted by the embassy as a research student, it depends on the University

Thank you for your reply...
But if you noticed the excel sheet (Universities' programs) attached with the MEXT passing certificate, there are master, doctoral and research courses !!!
That is what made me skeptical that there might be something wrong in my preliminary screening passing certificate !!

Yes, I think at first you are considered a "research student" until you take the entrance exam at the university to become a master's or doctorate student. You shouldn't have a problem, though it's weird that the University didn't know that. Maybe someone else can confirm too.

Dear Luquier, your reply really has comforted me... you have been so helpful, Thank you very much.

That's new to me! I've checked the website and yeah it has two campuses, one in Ibaraki and another one in Tokyo.
Unfortunately the course structure doesn't fit my needs. But thanks for your suggestion :D

I tried to look into more uni again for the past days - Yokohama, TMU, UEC, Soka, Chuo, Nihon, TCU, Kanagawa Institude of Technology, Kanagawa, Kogakuin, Shibaura, Shonan Institude of Technology, Shobi, IISEC, Surugadai, Chiba Institude of Technology, Tsuda, Teikyo Heisei, Tokyo Polytechnic, Tokyo Denki, Toho, Dokkyo, Bunkyo, Meisei.
All of them don't fit my needs as well. I found that Soken has the department I am interested in but when I look more carefully into the course structure, it doesn't offer what I want the most, and no researchers seem to do what I want to do.

Gah I will just have to stick with Todai only.
If I don't get the scholarship then I padan muka (serve me right to suffer).

I will pray harder for people like us starting from December until February, please please pity us (-人-。)

That is correct. You must pass the entrance exam before you can be an 'officially' enrolled MS/PhD student. That would require physically being in Japan (in-person) to take the exam, and passing, by the time you pass the preliminary screening. So, pretty much everyone (except uncommon cases) will receive the scholarship as 'Research Students' and join the university until they can pass the entrance exam; thence, they can extend the MEXT scholarship and change it to the "MS/PhD" scholarship.

Bro, Since we dont know what kind of advice do you need, i suggest you read the first page on last year MEXT research student thread, there are so many decent guide about applying this scholarship. Later, if you find any trouble in applying this scholarship, and internet or embassy cannot provide any answer to you, you could ask specific advice here, maybe we could help you.
If you need advice what university that most suitable for your research or which one is the best, i believe google know the answer.
Good Luck

I do hope you get Todai instead of padan muka ;) May I know what is your research?
I will be getting three LoAs and hoping MEXT will give me my first choice. Is it wise to submit three LoAs?
