Hello everyone, I tried looking around for a similar topic for this year's applications but couldn't find! Has anyone else here applied for the scholarship this year? In my country, as I think in most cases, the selections were delayed 2/3 months and the deadline to submit the application for research student just passed last week so now the long waiting begins. In my embassy they said they were going to restrict the number of people going to the written tests due to distancing rules and I was wondering if it was the same in other countries too and if you think they will cut budgets further this year... also I just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing the same anxious waiting as me

In Colombia the application deadline is September 9th. I am still preparing the application...and trying not to get too anxious about it. They did not mention anything regarding the number of people selected to present to written text. I will let you know as soon as I get news . Best of luck!

Oh, so it's even later than in my country, I thought we were the latest ones as usual...did you have any trouble with the field of study and research plan? I feel like it's the most important document in the application but the examples on the internet of successful applicants are all so different from each other that I couldn't really figure out how the right structure should be or if the topic I have chosen is even relevant or not... I guess I will just have to wait the first screening results to find out

wow they take only ten days to screen the applications?! I think it's one of the fastest I have seen! that's good that you don't have to wonder for weeks

I am assuming the reason why is because the number of applicants isn't really that high. We are a very small country with a population of 2 Million

In Brazil there will be no written tests, the scholarships will be evaluated by the national exam scores (ENEM). To prove a certain influence of the English language and basic knowledge of Japanese, it will be necessary to test the proficiency of both languages. Well, I would prefer it to be the old model. Written test. Unfortunately, this pandemic broke my entire schedule. I will leave it to try in 2021.

I am sorry for my late reply. YES!! absolutely! I had so many troubles trying to figure out how to construct a solid "field of study" document. I was completely lost! should I add objectives, research questions, references? or should I overlook those parts? In my country, they gave us a limited number of pages (no more than 2) but I had to add an extra page for the study plan and the references. I wrote to some many people trying to figure out how to do it...in the end, I just focused on doing something professional and coherent for me. And then I had to gather all the documents they required, and the letters and the MEXT application form (that one was huge)!! Now I am happy that I just sent it. Hope everything is fine !! we´ll see.

Hello Everyone!

Recently I received a call from the embassy and they told me the interview will be next Friday. Have you received a similar call? Do you know if there will be a different kind of examination as the exams previous to the interview had been canceled?

Hi, I'm from Peru and I'm still waiting for the postgraduate results myself. I called the Embassy 10 days ago and they said they couldn't tell when exactly are the preselection results coming out; I'll just have to wait. They haven't said anything about canceling the first screening examinations, but I think that's gonna probably happen considering that they already cancelled them in other countries... Please let me know if you get any news from your local embassy ;)

Hi all, I recently got the embassy recommendation for 2021, September start. I have a potentially major problem. When I wrote my application, and filled in all the forms, the universities I indicated allowed direct entry as a Master's student for the September/October intake (i.e. you get the MEXT scholarship, complete all the admissions stuff in your home country, then fly out to Japan to start the semester) without the need for a period of time as a research student. However, as I come to apply to these courses now, they have revised these conditions to reflect the delayed MEXT timetable and now require September/October intake to take an initial research student period.

My concern is that as I filled in my original application I said the first program I intended to complete was a Master's, so can I now not join as a research student? Really feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me...

I am on the same boat as you, but from what I heard, we should be fine
whatever we've put in the application is tentative anyways and it will require the approval of our respective universities so if they say we should enroll as research students first then that's what we will do regardless of whatever we put in the application

you can also double check this with the embassy to be 100% sure

Khalid, that's a relief. It seems silly but I had a horrible feeling this had only happened to me. Good to hear your experience, I expect the embassy in the UK will say the same. After all how can we be expected to predict changes like this?

Thanks again for the reply - what're you planning to study?

Hey, I believe it is the way it works in most cases. The Japanese Embassy in my country told as that we ALWAYS have to start as research students regardless of our choice (i.e. master's or PhD program). Once at university, we can switch from research student to master's or PhD candidate. The time invested as a research student WILL count towards your final program of choice (i.g. 6 months of research student + 1.5 years as master's student = 2 years total). Hope this helps :)

Hi lufrco; I believe the exact opposite is the case. After a period as a research student you apply for an extension to the MEXT scholarship that will give you a fresh 2 years to complete the Master's course in. Otherwise the system simply wouldn't function for the majority of courses which are 2 years long. I've had that confirmed by several ex scholarship students.

Interesting - in the UK they said to 'follow the criteria of the admissions outlined by the universities you wish to attend', which in my case explicitly stated there was no need for students to initially join as research students if they wished to start in September/October (until that all got turned upside down by covid).

The whole 'research student' status seems... strange. Feels like a motivation for universities to encourage this and get more money, rather than streamline admissions. If I were being cynical.

I see. I guess the whole MEXT scholarship process works differently depending on each country and the agreements they have with Japan. In our case, once we arrive in Japan, as research students, we have to additionally take 6 months (at least) of Japanese language/culture (depending on your proficiency level) before actually enrolling in university, regardless of the language of instruction of your program.

Wish you the best in your future studies and I hope everything turns out well for you 👍🏻

Thanks for the link - the embassy got back to me yesterday and said much the same! Seems like it won't be a problem.

International relations - still waiting to hear back from my two as well. I hope one of them is in the bag at least as we have worked together in the past.
