Hi everyone, can anybody here share a japanese language jokes written in roman characters not in katakana, hiragana or kanji. Thank you very much.

Japanese don't tell jokes. They make puns, funny remarks, and things like that. But no jokes. At least not the "A guy walked into a bar......" or "Did you hear the one about the farmer's daughter?" type.

In fact, one of the most frustrating things you can do is to tell a joke to Japanese people. Even if you preface it by telling them it's a joke, usually they don't get it and will ask "Did that really happen?"

That's really interesting, Mike.
Your post by itself would make a nice three-liner in English, I think.
I wonder how they (a well seasoned Japanese, that is) will respond if you told them that?
Or could it be that the Japanese tell jokes among themselves only when foreigners are not around; somewhat like the leprachauns in Ireland?

Here's one that was posted a while back which is funny to me -- although I haven't had much luck getting it to spread either....:D

Most Japanese jokes will lose all of their humor written out in roman characters because the humor lies in the appearance of the characters and the homonyms involved.

That's a non-Japanese joke translated and adapted to Japanese names and location. I do hope you didn't think that was a joke that Japanese go around telling each other. They don't exist.

I personally don't like what passes as "humor" or "comedy" in Japan today--okay, I'm getting too old for it. 😊

The thread reminded me of a radio program that has been going on for the past 25 years. The host/narrator is a veteran actor with love for plebeian Japanese culture and a well-known humorist. There are so many advanced Japanese language students here, some of you may enjoy listening to his old-style Japanese humor:

Have a look at this wonderful footage of Kyu Sakamoto being interviewed on American television in the 60's. About two thirds of the way through he is asked to tell a Japanese joke. Unfortunately it does not translate well, but the audience are so in love with him they laugh anyway. Hard not be in love with the young Kyu!
