How to Type Japanese

Hmm, don't take my word on this, but I believe there's a website that will convert Japanese text into small images so any computer can view them.

I'm having weird issues with the language bar thing. I am a native Spanish speaker, so my keyboard is Spanish. When I switch to Japanese, everything's peachy, but when I try to switch back to the original language, for some reason it adds an English keyboard to the list, and switches to that. Any suggestions on how I can tackle this issue, or someone who experienced something similar? It's driving me nuts.

I'm having some issues too. Right now my keyboard is set to the Japanese Input System (MS-IME2002) and I really like it, except I have an azerty keyboard (and I'm used to it), and for some reason my keyboard changes to qwerty when I have Japanese as standard language.

Anyone knows how I can go back to azerty while keeping Japanese as standard language ?

Sounds like you need to tell Windows XP the language you want to use and the keyboard you want to type it with.

It's in the Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.

Select the Languages tab and then click on Details.

Add a language and then select the appropriate keyboard.

You might first need to check that the keyboard you're using is correctly identified by the Windows Device Manager. For example US English Windows XP does not recognize a Japanese USB keyboard as being Japanese - it still thinks you're using a US keyboard. You have to go the keyboard driver menu and under the advanced install menus select Toshiba USB 109 Japanese keyboard (even if I'm NOT using a Toshiba). This then gives you a correctly mapped Japanese USB keyboard to use with English XP. To avoid the driver being reset if I change USB ports take ten minutes to install the 'Toshiba USB keyboard' driver with the keyboard plugged into everything single USB port in turn - it's boring but it works.

I can't guarantee this works with anything other than US, UK and Japanese keyboards - no first-hand knowledge. PM me if you want exact menu click instructions.

Boy, what a pain, all those problems...

I have the Dutch WinXP, with a US keyboard and have simply set the Japanese ime as the only one! If I need Japanese chars, I can switch to kana with the right mouse button, and if I need Latin chars, I can switch to direct input with the right mouse button, too. Very convenient, although I have to admit it has gone wrong once, and I ended up with the system thinking I was using a Japanese keyboard, very strange, but also very rare.

Well that was fun, I was always wondering how I could do it, I have windows Vista and it was a little different to get it then how you described it, but I got it!

Thanks again!

How would you type the small dot (ツ・) that goes between some katakana?

On Microsoft's standard Japanese IME, the key is the question mark (?) key at your bottom right.

Otherwise, you can type 窶堙??堙ア and convert with the space key.

hehe- I typed a whole row of /////////// and pressed space bar and they all turned into dots!!!

I-ve already installed the IME, but i still can-t read, i see things like this
' 'è'ª'Æ'¤あIあ@'â'³'µ'¢'Å'·あI

! plus my keyboard is weird!! x(

edit: ok I already fixed it :D

Windows makes it so hard to type in Japanese. With Macs its very easy.

I want to type Japanese but I don't know where my XP install disk is. I downloaded something off microsoft that enables me to see J font in webpages, but thats all. It's so frustrating to be able to see Japanese but not have the ability to type it. I've looked over a number of websites but it all leads back to installation with the XP Disk. Can anyone help please?
Oh and don't mention Wakan, that program needs J fonts or whatever...
:(

I second that, maris.

Wish I could help you, Jericho Desu, but I never learned how to do it on a pc. Pc's really are a pain in about every way. The only suggestion I can make is, get a Mac ;-) They can type Japanese right out of the box. No installation of anything required (just check marking of the languages you want to use in System Prefs). My Mac came with 15 languages built in.

Well, I found out about JWPce and I hope the writing shows up well, until I can find that damn XP disk...

Please fix if I'm wrong or if nothing shows up then...ignore it and forgive me 😌:sorry:

This should do the trick.
O.c. some ppl may ask why I'm using ナスn, not ツ鞘? I don't know, I just like archaic version of that 👍

My name is ... instaed of I am ... - I think that will be the righ t thing.

There's the difference in the meaning between the two kanji, ツ鞘?ー and ナスn.

ー: first, early; used mainly about "time/order"
e.g.

ナスn: to start/to begin; used mainly about "moving"
e.g.

堋オ窶堙 means "this is the first time to see you", so kanji is commonly written as ツ鞘?

Thanks to both of you, I don't know how to read kanji in compounds yet, but this is a good start for me.
👍🙂

I haven't seen you for a long time.

窶堋ウ窶堙ア is so convenient honorific that is usable for most situation, regardless of age or sex.

Hi I have a problem with my XP Pro Japanese input. Most of the time it works fine and I can choose Hiragana, Half/Full Width, Alphanumeric, etc.

But sometimes (like now) it doesn't give me the option and it just says "Caps" and "Kana" toggles next to the language selection. Any ideas as to how to get it to go back to normal?

This is a screenshot of what it looks like:
