Hmmm, and been meaning to learn for a few years. Well, if you actually started it would help. And there are no shortcuts.

I'm genuinely and sincerely hopeful that he will continue studying and make use of the forum for help with it. Else I wouldn't have asked.

I think the problem was that they were not even starting to study. If they can study and get to the level they want, then that is a good achievement. We need more multi-lingual people in the world.
It's not easy and everyone learns differently. Maybe in another ten years I'll be ok at Japanese, but now it is pretty terrible, and knowing it is a long path might put a lot of people off. Helps that I am stubborn.
