修羅雪姫 is about a woman born in a Jail cell. Her mother, and 2 guy friends were apart of a scandal of collecting money from small villages. As she grew older, she's on a revenge.

不良姐御伝 is set in the same time frame as the movie Last Samura. If I remember correctly she is an assassinist. She's going after a head guy taking over some sort of bad government stuff.

男たちの大和 is about the men and lives of the biggest Japanese battleship Yamato.

Azumi 1

If you like Zatoichi, then you can't miss Azumi. It's almost the epitime of chanbara eiga--1 skinny girl (Aya Ueta) against so many ninja & samurai. You'll have a good time watching it.

There are quite a few Japanese movies I like so I don't have a favourite.

Yeah, Versus is quite a trip. It had a little of everything in it. The ending added a sweet twist to an already fascinating movie.

Seven Samurai, As you can tell I really like Samurai movies

Did you see the animated mini-series loosely based on the concepts of that movie? It was a decent anime for what it presented, but what made it worth watching for me was the ending. Yeah, I'm apparently a fan of good endings.

*warning, pseudo-spoilers ahead*

The way the youngest member of the group confronted that girl he had once liked with the things he said, then walked out with his head high and dignified. That was just a bad@ss way for him to leave his mark. I just was irritated by the way she would judge him throughout the story.

No I haven't seen it, but I know which one your talking about. I've actually been avoiding it a bit, probably because of its connections with Seven Samurai I'm worried if it's going to make me cringe, however eventually I'll check it out.

You might find it surprising for me to say this. Yet I suggest you don't check it out. Cause yes, it will make you cringe on all the absurd things the story revolves around. Such as the pirates that the samurai are hired to protect the village from, they fight using skyscraper-tall mechs. The samurai fight on foot of course. You can only imagine what kind of exaggerated fighting this leads to. It's like watching X-men take down Sentinels.

I only brought up the series since there was a high probability of you having seen it. Despite my excitement for how it ended, the series overall is not a compliment to the original Akira Kurosawa series.

Oh, has anybody seen the Japanese written/directed/themed/acted movie that interestingly enough is entirely in English? (not dubbed either. The voices are the actors, complete with heavy accents and dialects.) It's called Sukiyaki Western Django ('sukiyaki western' being a clever Japanese parody on the classic term 'spaghetti western'.) It has an acting cameo from Quentin Tarantino in it. Yet the movie is the brain-child of renowned director Takashi Miike. The movie is sub-par for a Miike film and not as graphic as most of his previous incarnations. Yet it is still within his over-the-top style.

I thought so, I mean I like crazy anime fight scenes, but to spin it off a classic like Seven Samurai is like blasphemy lol. Oh well...

I don't think I can even begin to pick one favorite Japanese movie, but thinking in terms of genres a lot come to mind.

Kurosawa was indeed a master. Among his samurai movies I perhaps like Throne of Blood and Ran the best (it's hard to go wrong teaming up with Shakespeare). Dreams had some remarkable imagery, and I'd also highly recommend Dodes'ka-den.

Still thinking of older movies, Kwaidan is another favorite. The pace is slow by modern standards, but it has a gorgeous adaptation of "Hoichi the Earless."

Tanpopo is probably my favorite comedy, but it's only one of several fun ones from Itami Juzo.

When it comes to anime I'm a Miyazaki fan. If I have to pick one I suppose it would be Sen to Chihiro, but I also love Tonari no Totoro and Majo no Takyubin.

For horror, Tsukamoto Shinya's Tetsuo movies stand out in my mind.

Also, I haven't noticed anyone mention the Onmyouji movies yet. I thought they were a lot of fun.

Dark Tales from Japan has to be my favorite Japanese movie. Well, its a bunch of short horror films, but it sends chills down my spine everytime I watch it.

I like most of the films I watch from Japan. I definitely like Takeshi Kitano's style of film making as well as a few others that I can't remember the name of.

For anime, Akira has stuck with me since I've watched it (although I don't watch anime anymore)

I've watched so many I can't keep track of all of them, but I can recall most if not all scenes from memory

Hey Everyone,

There was this totally awsome movie. Its was collection of short ghost stories does anyone remember the name of it.The film came out in the sixties I remebers some of the stories it had were.
"The Ice Woman"
"Hoichi the Earless"
and many others.

For my choice I would have to pick two films, the first one being "Shichinin no samurai" known in the West as Seven Samurai, and the second would be "Zatoichi".
