Do you sleep on a futon?

Hi All,
I have a question for those of you who do sleep on a futon. I understand they are made to fold up and put away during the day. The question I have is this: how do you fold up a full size futon? I would like very much to get one (back problems) but my wife wont let me have one unless it is full size. Thanks for any responses

Does anyone konw the answer?...I really want to buy a futon. TIA!!

Come to think of it, I did sleep on a futon while I was in the Navy! When you're stationed onboard ships, the mattresses for bunks in living quarters were no more than three, maybe four inches deep, and that's placed on a flat, hard metal surface which served as your locker space, so I can say I've kinda "enjoyed" the futon experience!

I slept in a tree one night because some dogs chased me to it and nobody came looking for me. Long story but it was a rough night.

I sleep under my futon...yeah, I have a bed, so I sleep on a mattress. In the Autumn it was nice and hot every night, so usually I would not even have a blanket on top of me. Since Winter arrived I have been so cold, and I don't have enough blankets, that I just use the futon in my room as another blanket...very comfortable indeed, and it keeps me warm after I've been lying there for long enough.

I've been sleeping on a thin futon for the past three months, and I hate it. I'm never achey or anything, and I don't have trouble falling asleep, but I miss my bed in Canada. It's one of the things I'm looking forward to for when I go home. My thick, soft bed with my abudance of pillows and my goosedown duvet.

I sleep on a futon up on the shelf in my Leo Palace (how badly named is my one-room flat? Palace my arse.) and its fine, nice and comfy. However, I got a bit lazy with the folding and airing, so I have a small mold problem! Doh.

Well, yes and no.
If you're talking about the futon-futon, yes you and Miss-Apollo7 are correct.
But if it's the international brand, like the one I had for 2 yrs, it could go on a bed frame, or even a sofa. In which case, the futon has become generic.

I had a collapsible futon sofa. I loved it!! I had to part with it when I got married. The wife says, you can't keep that filthy thing. I'm still not sure if she was refering to the futon, or me having used it for 2 yrs....a mystery I'd rather not know more....

You actually might be able to pick one up, though it depends on where you are. If you're in one of those major cities, try visiting Japantown. They sould be located near Chinatown. Or just get one thru the internet.

Futon is very confortable but without any tatami under your futon will be difficult to enjoy it at all.

I have slept on futon in tatami rooms and that was nice. Now that I'm moving to Tokyo I'm being offered futon as bed but there is no tatami mats.

Has anyone slept on a futon (japanese style) on hard wooden floor? I'm concerned it will be too hard and then it might get cold in winter since Japanese houses are not heated. Anyone that can confirm or ease my worries?

No. I house sat in a house with a futon. The next day I brought my camping pad to make it more comfy & that did the trick. I would never sleep on one by choice. However, if someone gave me free room & board in Japan, I would never complain.

Why is that? I am thinking of getting a futon but my apartment doesn't have a tatami room.

In Japan, there is bed which laid a tatami mat

I have slept on a futon over tatami before . . . best sleep I've ever had really. But, this was at a friend's house, and those times are long past.

I really longed for a futon bed again, but kake-futon plus shiki-futon plus tatami is terribly expensive!!! But, I could not totally hold back my desires, so I ended up buying a kake-futon to sleep under. I don't mind firm too much, so most times I just sleep on top of a sleeping bag thrown over my floor . . . Anyway, I totally love my kake futon, which is nice and large (queen size). I just need to get it cleaned soon . . . oh, the bill!

Not here in the states, but whenever I am in Japan I sleep in futons exclusively as I think they are most comfortable and very good for the back.

I especially love sleeping in them in the wintertime when the futons are thick and heavy when there is no heat in the room. There is no better feeling than getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom freezing and getting back in that warm cozy futon-especially when there is also a warm body next to you in a double futon. Very nice indeed!
