I was told it was probably a suspension link, but I don't know if that's right...

This is a tension rod. It'll improve alot of road cornering, esp if you are a drifter. Some of them can be adjustable too.

thats a honda civic dogbone (rear upper support) might be a nice upgrade

It could be a suspension drop link or an engine tie bar.
