Wow, Dinah Shore. I remember when she had that show on TNN way back in the day. I could never get over how she looked 45 at the age of 70. She was one of Burt Reynolds' old fames, wasn't she?
I'm just now trying to catch up to "now". You don't even want to get me started on this subject. Before the 50's country & western - it has to have twang, and early blues. Anyone heard of classical music? (I think that was in the 70's) I like I'd say 50's jazz, rockabilly & r&b, 60's pop soul ska and rock, especially the Monkees. (think I'll get some flack there) 70's rock and punk and early 70's soul like Al Green. Also Kraftwerk. And 80's hardcore punk - what else was there in the 80's? Oh the Plastics and Joy Division. The 90's - errrr was there music in the 90's? Oh yeah - Britpoppers. Pulp, Suede, Divine Comedy and Orbital. And all those guys in funny suits and funny haircuts. Well, I like Ozzy too. And as for now, uhm, the White Stripes and J-ROCK! That's all I know. Ok I left out the music from everywhere else - in high school I listened to India music alot. Ty Taylor anybody? They just booted him off INXS - it's a travesty.

I'm not that old either, but some guy named Edison invented some sort of method of recording sound way back when. It helps us to realize the world didn't start with us.

Yeah - different eras all have their great music, but different genres... that's another thing altogether. (I remember trying to explain music genres to a penfriend in an email and getting myself thoroughly confused! lol 
). Personally I can like good music in genres of classical, jazz, rock, metal (there are so many frikkin subdivisions of metal now that it makes me feel ancient that I don't keep up with them! 
), pop, dance, blues, ragtime, grindcore, brass bands, techno and folk. I hope I can still appreciate good skills, but I find it hard to like genres of country, funk, r&b, soul and rap! :sorry: And, for example, I had singing lessons for a while (really fun!) and it became that I could appreciate well the skills for opera singing - but I still hate to listen to it!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels ancient for not keeping up with stuff. I stopped listening for quite a while. My musical knowledge has huge gaps in it - so I like reading about what other people like, plus just finding out what everybody likes.
I forgot to say that now I listen to alot of Mexican tunes because those are the only decent stations I get on my AM radio in my truck. And now that we have Mexican radio in Washington - it makes me feel like I'm on a nice California vacation. I don't know what era - but I like the more traditional style songs, and some M-rock, tho not the modern easy pop Mexican stuff.

That's very interesting about synthesizers. If I knew I could build my own synthesizer I would have been much more interested in my boring electronics class in high school. I wish I had time to do stuff like that -I'm hoping to find time to just play some guitar, when I find it. What kind of synthesizers do you use Rich? Not that I know anything, but...
This is a bit off topic but I wonder if anyone knows the difference between recording vinyl or cds on a stereo and recording them with the computer. Is the sound quality the same or is it changed somehow? I wouldn't want my rock to sound too high quality - I like it raw and loud and garagy. I don't like the sounds too picked apart if you know what I mean, like with a too high quality stereo system.

DANGER! You've just asked Rich about electronic music!
You can get hardware effects units that will add as much filth as you like. Guitar FX pedal type things. Many guitar bands use them.
I'm sure there is also software that will have the desired effect.
I like a bit of filth! Even on the cutting edge of technology there are connections to the good aspects of the old stuff. Many manufacturers are building new things that have old-fashioned valves in them, because valves add warmth to the sound.
There is a drum and bass musician called Dillinger who uses valve speakers at his club night. They issue free ear plugs on the door!
The are these German dub/techno musicians who take all their instruments apart and mess with them, to make them sound dirtier and noisier.
Another German(Pole) has made lots of tunes using surface noise and clicks.
I have a Korg drum machine,
an old Roland drum machine,
Novation desk-top synth,
Novation BassStation,
Akai sampler,
valve compresser,
all running through an analogue mixing desk.
I use Logic software on a Mac to sequence it all.
I've always wanted a Roland TB-303 (my Avatar)
It is an ancient synth that was used to make Acid House music in the '80s
They are a pig to use, and like gold dust these days.

Cool I had no idea about that stuff. Except pedals I need one for my guitar, although I don't even have an amp yet - just run it through my stereo. And I got my Japanese copy of a stratocaster free for helping my friend move. You can't beat that, but it's not my guitar of choice. It seems other people have already thought the quality of sound issues. (naturally)
I think I'm missing alot of interesting new musics. When I want to learn more I usually start buying mags & zines & read reviews but I like that people know alot about various types of music here. Also I'm sure there's plenty of resources on the web that I don't know about yet, and since I'm fairly broke that would be the way to find out.

lol... I don't even have capacity to make music using my computer. I just do everything the traditional way, just playing my instruments, I have no way to record what I do. I'd really like to be able to... then I could make myself some backings and put different lines together and... all sorts of interesting stuff... but... I would need much equipment and I can't afford it. 
Plus, I would end up spending too much time on the computer I am sure, whereas what I really want to be doing is playing, playing, playing! (uhh, I mean of the instrumental variety.... obviously!)
I really admire anyone who does this kind of thing. And it's a different skill too from playing the instruments. My friend has a mixing desk and he is putting together stuff with samples taken from off the net (his instrument is voice, so he needs to get guitar, bass and drum samples) and to me it sounds really good so far. He's hoping to make a whole album!
I'd like to record my own stuff mainly so that I could have something to sing over. I really suck at playing guitar and singing at the same time ... and I love singing. I don't somehow think the neighbours would appreciate it, though - my voice is LOUD!!! (lol... I can sing quietly too! but not all of the time!)
The only effects I have on my guitar apart from the gain which I vary depending, are reverb, which I don't use much, and a flanger, which I haven't used recently but (-omg-I'm-just-reminded-I-have-it-I-want-to-use-it!-) it's cool for effects...

I greatly admire people who can play any sort of musical instrument, especially guitars and keyboards. Me? I'm damn lucky to be able to play a kazoo! Singing? Forget it! I'm horrible even in the shower. More power to talented folks like you all!
