Being an a-hole in Japanese

Well the writing book I consiter the most essential part of the learning, that and the work books. I started out with the simpler books because I came into it with a casual, somewhat weak knowledge of the language and needed to get more associtaed with the basics.

He is saying that your books are bad, not simple. Everyone starts of with no knowledge of the language, but thats no excues for buying ineffective books. Your main text should be the most essential part, and you were severely lacking there. Just from the title you can see that books like Japanese in 30 hours isn't aimed at someone actually trying to learn Japanese. However, since you bought Genki or JFPB you should be OK.

My goal is no less than JLPT level 4 by the end of this year.

In one year huh. . .are you going to do nothing BUT study Japanese? I cant say its impossible - but from whats in this thread, you might have some pretty unrealistic expectations on learning japanese - especially if your 'structure' is based solely on what you want to learn and moving from there.

I passed level 4 last year after about a year of scratching around, teaching myself like Mr SortOf says he does. It's not that hard. However, had I started with a proper text book from the very beginning I would have passed level 3 instead. So, SortOf, I recommend getting something like Genki or Minna No Nihongo and working through those books only. Only one book at a time too, you don't need all that other rubbish. (Although the Heisig kanji learning book might be useful too).

So...get Genki (or Minna No Nihongo) plus the attitional CDs and practice books, plus Heisig, and store all those other books in the cupboard for a year.
