I am unsure where to post this, perhaps a moderator will move it for me.
Background (skip-able):
My girlfriend and I are applying for the JET program this year, and we are trying our best to learn Japanese before we go. I have nearly 100 books (bought a box at a yardsale for 5$!) and rosetta stone, tell me more, kanji programs... everything. BUT, learning is nearly impossible for us because although we have all this information at our fingertips, we struggle without practical practice. The closest Japanese speaking person that i know of is over 100 miles from where we live. Because of this we have been trying to find an online source of practice. Of course forums and such are here, but I have been trying to find a virtual reality that we can actually interact in. I have Meet-me, and iv tried second life. But they are only semi-immersive. So i was considering using google earth, which leads me to this post.
Question:
Does anyone know where i could find a live webcam, or sound recording, anything of a japanese street? I simply want to hear the idle chatter and cars driving by in a city like Tokyou or Hiroshima.... something a bit busy. So that i can play it in the background.
Reason:
I thought it might be interesting to get my dictionary and kanji book, get on google earth and drop myself right down in the middle of tokyou in street view. After doing this, use my book and such to hopefully navigate myself to a store, hotel, gas station, etc etc by only using my book and a map. I think this would be an excellent immersion idea. But i would like to have an ambient sound playing because otherwise im just looking at a silent screen.
