Maybe he just wanted to know what difference in nuance there is between using 知っていた and 知ってた.

The reason I asked this was because someone told me that this form meant "wanted to do something"
I thought (Example): 働いてた (wanted to work)

It seems that you confused てた and たい.
たい means "wanted to do something"

Yeah,
働いて(い)た means "was working."
働いて(い)たい means "want to be working."
働いて(い)たかった means "wanted to be working."

wanted to do something means 'takatta' (past tense form of 'tai').

I'm probably way off here. But does the gerund+たい (implying "want/wants to" verb) have the same meaning as gerund+たいん? I thought I heard or read that somewhere. :?

Yes, it does, but the -ん part is a different thing. We actually have quite a bit of topics here about what the -ん （-の） in the end of sentences are. I'm too lazy to dig any up now. ^^'
