今日 - kon nichi? or kyo?

I've come across this particular usage a few times and am confused has to when each pronunciation is used.

The specific sentence I'm looking at is this:

いつでも今日が、いちばん楽しい日。

At first I read the kanji as konnichi, but later I read that it should be kyo. How can I figure that out just through reading?

its always read as kyo. I never heard it being read as konnichi. except maybe when making a formal speech in front of people, but even in speeches I rarely heard them use konnichi.

According to WWWJDIC, 今日 has another meaning, "these days; recently; nowadays", when it is pronounced こんにち. (I'm not saying this would be used in your sentence, but in other cases maybe.)

By the way, when romanising Japanese it's essential to indicate long vowels, so 今日 is not "kyo" but "kyou" or "kyō".

Yeah, こんにち is only used for "these days; recently; nowadays" in these days, not for "today". 本日[ほんじつ] is preferred as "today" in a formal speech/text.
