I don't know if there's much interest in this, but there's a similar thread on another forum, and I thought it might be good practice for our members here. We can do more than one article a day. I only put that there as a 目安. So to get things kicked off and see how this goes, here's the first article:

京都の木村次郎右衛門さん、男性世界最高齢に 113 歳

AFP通信によると、男性世界最高齢の114歳だった 米国人ウォルター・ブルーニング氏が14日、老衰のため、米西部モンタナ州の高 齢者施設で死去した。

If anyone wants a vocabulary list to go along (or even just readings for characters), just say the word, and we can append one.

Here's one for our gaming members. News about a possible launch of a new Nintendo console.

「任天堂、次世代据え置き型ゲーム機を6月に発表」の報道
任天堂が6月に開催のゲーム業界展示会E3で、 Wiiの後継となる次世代の据え置き型ゲーム機を発表すると海外で報じられている。

It's looking like it won't be 3D, though.

Some vocab:
任天堂(にんてんどう) -- Nintendo
次世代(じせだい) -- next generation
据え置き型ゲーム機(すえおきがた げーむき) -- console game machine
ゲーム業界(げーむ ぎょうかい) -- the game industry
大手(おおて) -- large (company, manufacturer, etc.)
前触れ(まえぶれ) -- a sign; an indicator; a portent
-筋(-すじ) -- a suffix indicating a relationship with a certain area/field
情報筋(じょうほうすじ) -- a source of information
家庭用(かていよう) -- for use in the home

Today's article isn't so nice, but will probably be of interest to most people (I assume, anyway).

ニコラス・ケイジ逮捕 泥酔し妻に暴力の疑い
AP通信などによると、米ニューオーリンズの警察は16日、家庭内暴力や迷惑行為などの疑 いで、米人気俳優、ニコラス・ケイジ(47)を逮捕し たと発表した。

I wonder why he had to go and attack someone else's car... Anyway, vocab:

逮捕(たいほ) -- arrest
泥酔(でいすい) -- really really drunk (do we have a word for this?)
家庭内暴力(かていないぼうりょく) -- domestic violence
迷惑行為(めいわくこうい) -- probably here it's the same as "disturbing the peace", although literally it's "actions that disturb"
~の疑いで(~のうたがいで) -- on suspicion of...
観光名所(かんこうめいしょ) -- famous tourist location
借家(しゃくや) -- rental home (this has other readings in the dictionary, but this one seems to be the most accepted/official)

出廷(しゅってい) -- appear in court
命じる(めいじる) -- to order someone to do something

Today's article is about a very common occurrence these days, unfortunately.

秋田県で震度5弱 津波の心配なし
9日午前4時14分ごろ秋田県の大仙刈和野で震度5 弱の地震があった。

Not much to say here, so here it is:

ピュリッツアー賞、米ネット・メディアが2年連続で受賞
【ニューヨーク=松浦肇】米報道界最高の栄誉である2011年のピュリツァー賞が18日発表され、ニューヨークに拠点を置くインターネットメディアの「プロパブリカ」が2年連続で受賞した。同賞は2009年から、紙媒体でない記事も審査の対象にしており、ジャーナリズムの世界でもネットメディアの台頭を印象付けた。

Oh, there is one thing: a typo in the first paragraph, that was correctly typed in the headline. See if you can find it. Before the vocab, the reporter's name, , is most likely read はじめ.

米(べい) -- American
報道界(ほうどうかい) -- the "world" of reporters

紙媒体(かみばいたい) -- paper media
媒体(ばいたい) -- a medium
台頭(たいとう) -- rise; amass force (an aside on this one, it's correctly written 擡頭, the first character having a 訓読み of もたげる, and the right side being the older form of 台. I would have preferred it being written 抬頭 if it were to be simplified at all, but alas, my opinion isn't worth much)
国内部門(こくないぶもん) -- domestic division
連載(れんさい) -- serial publication
米金融危機(べいきんゆうきき) -- American financial crisis
不動産(ふどうさん) -- real estate
証券(しょうけん) -- bonds

衰退する(すいたいする) -- weaken
顕在化する(けんざいかする) -- become clear

Sounds like a good idea. What about doing a 一日一動画 ?

I thought about that too, but I've got my hands a little full with this. 😌 You're more than welcome to give it a shot.

I was thinking of a version of the "First Episodes Project" (I stole that idea from the same place as this one) too, where we put together recommendations for shows to watch. We may have to take that to the entertainment section, though. Hiroyuki Nagashima had a thread like that called "Free Distribution of Anime" a while back, but I don't think it's been kept up for a while.

Anyway, I figure the more stuff like this the better, because it'll get people using the language more, and may draw more people here and spawn more interesting language discussions. I've kind of been taking an "if you post it they will come" approach with this. :)

Google search results

ピューリッツァー 約 177,000 件
ピューリツァー 約 26,400 件

ピュリッツァー 約 70,800 件
ピュリツァー 約 60,000 件

ピューリッツアー 約 25,900 件
ピューリツアー 約 1,570 件

ピュリッツアー 約 15,200 件
ピュリツアー 約 6,490 件

This shows the difficulty to transliterate a language into another one that has a different notation system. In fact, wiki actually uses two patterns, ピューリツァー for Joseph Pulitzer, ピューリッツァー for Pulitzer Prize.😌

I should have read the 'pedia more carefully. I thought it had ピュリッツァー賞. But then again, it's ピュリッツァー in the title and ピュリツァー in the first paragraph, both referring to the prize. Seems like a typo to me, or at any rate they should have picked one and gone with it for the sake of consistency. Interesting there are so many ways to render it in Japanese, though. It seems like normally it's one, or maybe two different ways to spell a word.

By the way, when I saw you had replied to this, I thought I had really screwed something up for a second. 😌

Totally off-topic: These posts remind me of the joke I've heard in an English Class at uni (loooong time ago!)
It was about the funny mis-reading of words, and one of them was Pulitzer Prize which was mistaken for "pullet surprise". :)

This one's a bit long and involved, although there are luckily some words that pop up over and over again. I'd rate it advanced. If it seems like too much for you just read what you can, or maybe skim for what looks accessible to you. It's also a bit sad, but there is some interesting information in it. Here we go:

運転中てんかん発作か 6人死亡事故の容疑者 県警見解

栃木県鹿沼市で登校中の小学生の列にクレーン車が突っ込み、児童6人が死亡した事故で、県警は20日、自動車運転過失致死容疑で調べを受けている運転手柴田将人容疑者(26)=日光市=が、てんかんの発作を起こしたため、突然意識を失い、事故を起こしたとの見方を固めた。

And right into the vocab we go (and there's a lot):

てんかん(癲癇) -- epilepsy. The kanji for this seem to not be used so often (they're even in parentheses on Wikipedia -- てんかん(癲癇)!), but it's not bad to be exposed to them (or at least that's what I think. I always try to find the kanji for a word, or at least check to see if they exist).
発作(ほっさ) -- paroxysmal attack. I find the Japanese easier than the English in this case.
県警(けんけい) -- prefectural police
見解(けんかい) -- opinion; view
栃木県(とちぎけん) -- Tochigi Prefecture, in the northern Kanto region
鹿沼市(かぬまし) -- Kanuma City, a city in central Tochigi Prefecture

道交法(どうこうほう) -- abbreviation of 道路交通法(どうろこうつうほう)which seems to be a Japanese-specific set of laws for ensuring safety and smooth flow of traffic (at least there are no other languages offered on Wikipedia...)
再発(さいはつ) -- recur
運用(うんよう) -- use; make use of
基準(きじゅん) -- standard

Well, that'll get you through the first page. The second page mostly has supplementary information on it.

Alright, I'm backing off a bit today after yesterday's all-out article. We're going to go a little easier and shorter. :)

It's fairly short. :)

Can I cheat a little more? This is a video from TBS news of a bit of good news. There's no transcript, but they subtitle interviewees at least, so you can read along with what they're saying (although watch out for the だ・です style changes).

東北新幹線、45日ぶり東京-仙台開通

A few points:
Listen for the very faint ふ in 復旧(ふっきゅう) at about 1:00 (JRでは復旧を急(いそ)いで順次(じゅんじ)運転(うんてん)再開(さいかい)区間(くかん)を広げ、ようやく今日(きょう)福島(ふくしま)-仙台間(せんだいかん)の運転再開に漕(こ)ぎ着(つ)けました。)
一層(いっそう)弾(はず)みがつくことになります is the last sentence. :)

And for pure reading practice, here's an article on the same topic:

東北新幹線、仙台―東京が開通 復興加速や観光客に期待
JR東日本は25日、東北新幹線の運休区間のうち仙台―福島の運転を再開し、東日本大震災発生から45日ぶりに仙台―東京が新幹線で結ばれた。29日には一ノ関―仙台が復旧する予定で、新青森―東京の全線で運行が始まる。

Maybe tomorrow I'll have the energy to put a vocabulary list up again. 😌

This one comes to you from the "when will people learn?" files. Seriously, will this sort of stuff ever stop happening?

Corrupt public officials in Aichi.

愛知県(あいちけん)-- Aichi Prefecture

There's a typo at the very end of the article.

Because this tool is available, and I didn't see much I wanted to deal with on Google's news site, I'm going to let the video substitute for the vocabulary list. I think it's pretty straightforward, anyway.

Unfortunate happening in Taiwan
台湾の人気山岳鉄道 列車が脱線して転落
台湾の山岳鉄道で脱線事故があり、列車が谷底に転落して5人が死亡し、約100人以上がけがをしました。日本人は含まれていません。

A few notes:

1) およそ isn't an officially recognized reading of 約 that I'm aware of, but often they'll write 約 and say およそ.
2) 両→輌 (counter for cars of trains)
3) Dates are often written in absolute terms (4月25日) and spoken in relative terms (きのう).

Trips out of town and the NFL draft have been keeping me busy, so I'm keeping yesterday's and today's articles brief.

Trouble for Gaddafi's forces, as they cross into Tunisia.

カダフィ派越境、チュニジア軍と交戦
【カイロ=加藤賢治】ロイター通信によると、リビアの最高指導者カダフィ氏派の戦闘 員が29日、隣国チュニジア東部ダヒバに侵入し、チュ ニジア軍と交戦した。

This one's got some tricky readings in it.

It's also short. That's actually the whole article.

Tip for readings of personal and place names: if you use weblio or the dictionary at goo (links to both in my sig) it will also search Wikipedia, or you can go straight to Wikipedia or try a Google search to see if the readings come up.

I've got another video, this time from FNN. Notice that in the text plain style is used, often with copulas omitted, but the announcer is clearly using です・ます体(たい).

福島第1原発事故 余震や津波対策としてトレンチ立て坑をコンクリートでふさぐ作業
東京電力は福島第1原発の作業員の被ばく線量をくわしく調べた結果、3月に3号機での作業中に被ばくした2人が、200ミリシーベルトを超えていたことを明らかにした。200ミリシーベルトを超える作業員が確認されたのは、初めて。

作業(さぎょう)-- work; operations
東京電力(とうきょうでんりょく)-- TEPCO (The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc.)

結果(けっか)-- result
3号機(さんごうき)-- the third (machine), in this case I assume it means reactor

One more thing, at one point he says 先月 instead of 3月, like in the きのう・25日 example I gave above. You aren't hearing things. :)

[Edit2] I listened again, and it was what I actually wrote just above this: 先月末 (せんげつすえ), not 3月末. So I changed it up above again to reflect the edit (again). 😌

PS3個人情報流出でソニー会見 パスワード変更を
プレイステーション3のインターネットサービスなどから大量の個人情報が流出した問題で、ソニーが初めて会見を開いて謝罪しました。

This time I'll leave it up to you to catch the discrepancies between what's said and what's written. It's mostly word-for-word, but there are a couple of minor differences. The vocabulary is straightforward and has been introduces in earlier articles, so I'll forgo the list this time. I'll just give this one, since it's new:

暗号化(あんごうか)-- encrypt/encryption

Well, it's the big story of last night and today, so may as well read about it in Japanese, right? Right.

Back to Japanese domestic affairs we go with today's article.

食中毒、ユッケ食べた10歳未満女児も重症に
富山県は3日、焼き肉チェーン「焼肉酒家えびす」で発生した集団食中毒で、砺波店でユッケなどを食べた10歳未満の女児が、腎臓障害などを引き起こす溶血性尿毒症症候群(HUS)で新たに重症となったと発表した。

So we get to learn some vocabulary related to organs and medical conditions with this one. Who's excited? I know: EVERYBODY! :) Alright, vocab:

食中毒(しょくちゅうどく)-- food poisoning
ユッケ(ゆっけ)-- a Korean dish with lightly seared beef and raw egg. The kanji are apparently 肉膾 (meat and raw meat), the hangul is 육회, and the romanization is Yukhoe. More on 膾 and ユッケ below.
未満(みまん)-- literally "not full", as in "not a full 10 years of age"
女児(じょじ)-- girl; young girl
重症(じゅうしょう)-- seriously ill
富山県(とやまけん)-- Toyama Prefecture, in the Hokuriku area (北陸地方) of Japan, facing the Sea of Japan (日本海).
3日(みっか)-- the 3rd day of the month
焼き肉(やきにく)-- yakiniku
チェーン(ちぇーん)-- chain, as in a restaurant chain
焼肉酒家えびす(やきにくさかやえびす)-- Yakiniku Sakaya Ebisu, the name of the restaurant
発生(はっせい)-- occur; happen
集団(しゅうだん)-- group
砺波店(となみてん)-- Tonami branch (the first character is a variant of 礪. Similar characters are 励 and 蛎 -> 勵 and 蠣. At first glance 栃 seems to be in that group, but it's actually a 国字 (Japanese-made kanji), and the other character that can be used in its place (except for in 栃木県) is 橡).
腎臓(じんぞう)-- kidney
障害(しょうがい)-- obstacle; hindrance (can also be written 障碍 or 障礙. I believe 障碍 has been proposed as the new writing, since 碍 has been approved for the new 常用漢字表, I believe for the specific reason of avoiding writing 障がい or 障害.)
引き起こす(ひきおこす)-- cause; bring about
溶血性尿毒症症候群(ようけつせいにょうどくしょうしょうこうぐん)-- Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (wasn't that fun?)
発表(はっぴょう)-- announce
計~(けい)-- used before a number to show it's the total number of X
患者(かんじゃ)-- patient (as in sick person)
県内(けんない)-- within/in the prefecture, as opposed to 県外(けんがい)
累計(るいけい)-- cumulative total
意識(いしき)-- consciousness
脳症(のうしょう)-- Encephalopathy* (now you're even happier you're reading this, right?)
診断(しんだん)-- diagnosis
駅南店(えきなんてん)-- as far as I can tell this just means a store to the south of a train station. Pretty descriptive name, eh?
高岡市(たかおかし)-- Takaoka City, a city in northwestern Toyama Pref.
食事(しょくじ)-- meal; eat
~歳代(さいだい)-- Used with a multiple of 10 before it, it means in one's X0s. For instance, 40歳代 -- in one's 40s.
男女(だんじょ)-- men and women; boys and girls; (human) males and females
腸管出血性大腸菌(ちょうかんしゅっけつせいだいちょうきん)-- enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli**. Alright, since there isn't an English page on this one, let's do the meaning version of "sounding it out". 腸管 -- "intestines" "pipe" -- simply "intestines" (more scientific name for 腸, it seems). 出血 -- "send out" (like 出す) "blood" -- to bleed. 性 -- suffix showing something like "ity" or essence. 出血性 -- bleeding-ity or bleeding-ish. The point here is blood is involved, like a hemorrhage. 大腸 -- "large" "intestines" -- I think you've got this one. 菌 -- "germ". Alright, so we've got, all together, a germ in the large intestines that causes intestinal bleeding. Aren't kanji great? Yes, yes they are.
検出(けんしゅつ)-- detect; find
感染症(かんせんしょう)-- contagious/infectious/communicable disease

Whew, wasn't that fun?! Also, it was nice of them to put the 振り仮名(ふりがな)オー above "O111" so that we know that it's an "o" and not a 0. I had actually been wondering about that for a few days, although I was pretty sure it was the latter. It's nice to have confirmation. :)

I'm going to stick with yesterday's story today and give you a video so that you can hear some of those words being pronounced.

仕入れ段階ですでに菌が付着か ユッケ食中毒問題
富山県などの焼肉店でユッケを食べた男の子ら3人が死亡した問題で、食中毒の原因となった肉は、焼肉店が仕入れた段階ですでに菌が付着していた可能性が高いことが分かりました。

I think the new vocabulary fairly slim here, and probably more on the basic side, so instead of a vocabulary list here are two questions to test your comprehension:

1) What has become understood as being a strong possibility?
2) How did they figure that?

Answers (highlight to read):
1) It's highly likely that the meat was already contaminated before it reached the restaurant.
2) They didn't find any trace of the germ from the cutting boards and similar utensils in the restaurant.

Here's a little more, if you want to hear more of the big words and see pictures of ユッケ:

Happy Cinco de Mayo to everyone who celebrate it! 🍾🎊 Mother's Day is coming up Sunday, and that will continue this unusual string of days I have things to do (they just keep popping up lately), so I may miss another day, or I just may be a bit late again. Now that everyone is aware of that...

This is an interesting bit of news about the big story lately.

当初から米部隊に「殺害」命令 ビンラディン容疑者作戦
【イスラマバード共同】国際テロ組織アルカイダの指導者ウサマ・ビンラディン容疑者襲撃作戦を実行した米海軍特殊部隊が受けていた命令は、「身柄拘束」ではなく「殺害」だったことが6日、分かった。作戦の全容を知る米政府筋が共同通信に明らかにした。

A lot of the vocabulary was just covered in the last article on this topic from two days ago, so I'm appending a fairly short list this time. Here it is:

当初(とうしょ)-- at/from the beginning/outset
命令(めいれい)-- order(s)
米海軍特殊部隊(べいかいぐんとくしゅぶたい)-- literally "American Navy Special Forces", here referring to the Navy SEALs. I'm not sure if there are other naval special forces it applies to as well, though.
身柄(みがら)-- a person's body
拘束(こうそく)-- detain; capture
全容(ぜんよう)-- the whole picture/story
抵抗(ていこう)-- resist
~上(じょう)-- a suffix indicating a basis for something (e.g., 国際法上 is like "from an international law standpoint", and 財政上 is like "financially (speaking)" or "from a financial standpoint"). It will always attach directly to a noun.
適法性(てきほうせい)-- legality
疑問(ぎもん)-- question; doubt
下す(くだす)-- hand down (a judgement, orders)
財政(ざいせい)-- finance
知れ渡る(しれわたる)-- become widely known
