Hi,

1. 子どもたちは、おそろしい目にあった時でも、おそらく そのことを忘れなかっただろうと、思いました。

Which of the following does this imply?

(i) they would not forget it because they were in a frightening situation (i.e. being in a frightening situation encouraged them to remember)

(ii) they would not forget it despite being in a frightening situation (i.e. one might think that being in a frightening situation would cause them to forget, but they didn't).


2. ピーターは、待ってはいられませんでした。

What is 待ってはいられませんでした? My guess is that いられませんでした could be past negative potential of いる (居る), and that はis inserted for emphasis or something. However, this idea could be total nonsense. I am not even certain that は is a particle and not part of some compound verb.


3. 星たちは、ピーターの名まえをよびはしましたが、助けようとはしませんで した。

Is よびはしました = よび + は (particle) + しました? If so, why not just よびました? Is は inserted to make a contrast/emphasis?

Similarly with 助けようとはしませんでした. Is the elaboration with は part of a contrastive pattern?

That's right. よび and 助けようと are in contrast. "to do one thing but (in contrast) not to do the other thing"
