Both of them are correct.

Although I'm not a linguist, I'd say that both を and が are OK.

However, を is standard. Use of が is emphatic.

水をのみたい。 (You just want to drink water)
水がのみたい。(You want to drink water and not anything else--not Coke or fruit juice.)

Just my two cents. :)

Yes, this is exactly what I read from the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar.

I think 「英語を読める」 is more natural than 「英語が読 める」 grammatically. Because 「英語を読むことができる」 is correct sentence but 「英語が読むことができる」 is unnatural sentence.
But in daily life, a lot of people use 「英語が読 める」 but not 「英語を読める」. Because Japanese people want to emphasize that "I can read English!". 😌 「が」 is used in emphasis.

Which one is correct, 「英語を読める」 or 「英語が読 める」? I think 「英語が読 める」 is major but both of them are correct. And I think you should use 「英語を読める」 in formal. 😌

I agree. が is used widely in spoken Japanese, regardless of whether it is emphatic or not. However, I think that every Japanese who consider oneself educated will use を, especially when writin

Or maybe it's because I belong on the other side of the generation gap.... 😅

Unlike Nangi san and epigene san, I doubt that を is more "formal" than が in such sentences. Please check the above link.

And I don't think 「が」 is for emphasis.

for ためにand ように, this website has more to say:

both are correct, but have different meanings.

(先生が)本をお読みになりました (the teacher) read the book
when using なる, you are showing respect for the person doing the action, in this case the teacher.

eg. 先生がお待ちに成って下さっております the teacher is waiting for me (showing respect for teacher)

本をお読みしました (I) read the book
when using する, you already implied you (the speaker) are the person doing the action. so, you don't need to add 私が to the sentence. also, this sentence also shows you're showing respect for the object (the book).

先生をお待ちして差し上げております i'm waiting for the teacher (showing respect for the teacher)

because you are the person doing the action, you cannot form a question using する. (you cannot ask if you have done something)

お食べしましたか? have i eaten? (completely wrong)

*i'm not exactly sure my keigo usage is 100% correct, but the meanings are there.

Speaking of ために, are you not supposed to put a の between a verb and ために, like 『逃げるのために』?

の is necessary only when noun comes before ように.
verb + ために 本を読むために
noun + の + ために 読書のために
You cannot put の after verb.
