Hello,

If possible please kindly help me with translation for the sentence below:

そこへ りっぱな さむらいが でてきて
「この ぬのは しもじもの ものが てにする しなものでは ない。」

Here is my, more likely wrong, translation:

Splendid samurai have appeared from over there.
"This cloth is not common people's property thing."

I am little bit unclear with しもじもの ものが てにする, if this expression is used to modify noun しなもの. Like "this which is common people property"

Thank you very much ! :sorry:

Hi, nonezumi san!

I think your understanding of grammar is already good, you just need a little help about the vocabulary as words and phrases rather unusual/not common are used in this kind of text (むかしばなし). :)

りっぱな さむらい
in this context, りっぱな means "of a high rank".
Here りっぱな is not of quality of the person but about his appearance.
(みなりの りっぱな)

しもじもの ものが てにする しなもの
something that lowly people may get/obtain
(something accessible for the lowly people)

As a side note - during the Edo period where these stories are set, there were mainly four classes in the society from top to down:
士農工商(し のう こう しょう)
士 means samurai, 農 farmers, 工 craftsmen, 商 merchants.
So samurai were at the top, and others are "lowly people".

Thank you so much for your, as always perfect, explanations.
I hardly could image so deeply meanings.
I really enjoyed by reading the historic events.
