Hello!

1. オタオタしてないで、はやくその問題を解決しなさい!

Translation given: "There's no reason to panic. Just handle it quickly."

Why してないで rather than しないで?

2. 主婦が余暇を十分持てるようになったのも電化製品の賜物である 。

Translation given: "Thanks to electric goods, housewives have plenty of free time."

What is the purpose of も in this sentence?

3. それに対して、向かいの店はお昼になっても中はがらが らだ。

My translation: "In contrast, the shop opposite is empty even at lunchtime."

How is 中 pronounced here? うち? なか? What's the difference in this context?

4. 「~に対して」は「対する」という動詞の基本的な使い 方がある。

I assume this means something like "「~に対して」 has the same basic usage as the verb 「対する」."

However, I'm having a mental blank about the grammar. Is the structure "「~に対して」は X がある", meaning "「~に対して」 has X"? If so, why not "「~に対して」には X がある"?

5. その科学者は、最新の科学知識に照らしてその奇妙な現 象を説明した。

Translation given: "The scientist explained the strange phenomena in the light of recent scientific knowledge."

Here, I don't understand 最新の科学知識に照らして (though I know 最新の科学知識 means "latest scientific knowledge" and 照らす means "to illuminate"). It would make sense to me if 照らす was a passive form (something like "illuminated by the latest scientific knowledge"), but as it is I can't figure out the subject and object of 照らして or the role of に.

6. 朝食はバイキング形式だって。

Translation given: "Breakfast is a smorgasbord."

Is だって = だ (copula) + って (quoting)?

1)
present progressive vs. present

2)
too/also
主婦が余暇を十分持てるようになった is one of the merits of 電化製品.

3)
なか
It's quite rare to read 中 as うち. 内 is usually used for it. When meaning "inside", うち is hardly used solely, without any adjectives/attributives. In the sentence お昼になってもうちはがらがらだ, うち could be misinterpreted as "us/our shop".

4)
That sentence doesn't make much sense. Are there any typos, something like 使い方ある?

5)
~に照らして means "comparing with~/consulting ~/refering to~" here.

2 基準になるものと比べ合わせる。見比べて確かめる。参照する。「学則に―・して処分する」「歴史に―・せば明らかである」
照らす(てらす)の意味 - goo国語辞書

The subject is その科学者, and に indicates the criteria/basis.

6)
Yes.

Thanks Toritoribe!

Oh ... is it for していないで?
2)
too/also
主婦が余暇を十分持てるようになった is one of the merits of 電化製品.
I seem to come across quite a few of these example sentences where the "too/also" sense of も is left untranslated, which kind of throws me. Does this "too/also" sense seem quite weak in the Japanese, so that it can be ignored, or do you think it's just loose/sloppy translations?

I checked again and I don't see any typos in my transcription. Of course, there may be a typo in the original...

Oh ... is it for してないで?
Yes. してないで is a contraction of していないで.

Both are possible in that sentence. If the sentence is put on the beginning of a paragraph or written solely without any context, the meaning is almost the same to 主婦が余暇を十分持てるようになったの, i.e., the sense of "too/also" is weak. However, if another merits of electric goods is mentioned in the context previously, the sentence obviously has the sense of "too/also", of course.

Yeah, as always...

Yes. してないで is a contraction of していないで.
Silly me. I know that contraction pattern, but for some reason didn't think of it in this case!

Thanks, that's very helpful to know.

I can't figure out the subject and object of 照らして
To think about this again, the interpretation that the subject of 照らす is the scientist, which I wrote in my previous post, is not incorrect, but it would be more common to interpret that 最新の科学知識に照らして is an adverbial phrase.
