Hi,

1. これで本当にいいのかどうか、ここで一度考えてみようじゃないですか

I recognise all the words in this sentence, but even so I do not understand its overall meaning or purpose, or the situation in which it would be said. Especially, I do not understand the role of これで and ここで.

2. ばかにしないでください。それくらいのこと、私にもできますよ。

To me this looks like "Don't make fun of me. Even I could do that." Is that right? It does not sound fully coherent as I've translated it. The emphasis in the second sentence seems wrong. I'm also not certain that the target in the first sentence is "me".

3. 今回の事件をきっかけに、消費者は食品の表示に注意するようになった。

What exactly is 表示 referring to?

4. テレビを通して見る顔と、_____ が違っていてびっくりすることがある。

The student is supposed to fill in the gap with some suitable words.

a) Is the missing phrase intended to mean "appearance in real life", or similar?

b) Is the sentence talking about the experience of people in general or the speaker's own experience?

5. あなたにとって一家団らんはどんな時間ですか。

Is this seeking an answer like "at Christmas"/"in the holidays"/etc., or is it seeking an answer like "it's great fun"/"we always end up arguing"/etc. I would guess the former, but not certain.

1)
これ refers to an idea, a plan or the recent situation. ここで means "now".

2)
Yes, the target of the first sentense is "me". それくらいのこと means "such an easy task".

3)
label

4) a)
Yes.

b)
Both can be possible, but it would be the former. If the speaker had an experience, it should be びっくりした/びっくりしたことがあった. I don't think he/she meets entertainers or something repeatedly. (In other words, if it's the speaker's "habital action", ことがある can be used.)

5)
It's the latter. ~はどんな時間ですか is asking the content of the topic. ~はどんな時間帯ですか/~はいつですか or どんな時間が~/いつが~ are used for asking "when".

Thank you.

1. a) What is the relationship between これ and 本当にいいのかどうか? I mean, I can't see that it's asking if これ is いい, because that would be これが/は, wouldn't it?

b) I assume the second part of the sentence is suggesting that they consider the question raised in the first part, yes?

a)
~でいい means "~ is fine/enough with the situation", not just "~ is good/fine".

b)
Exactly.

So combining those two things, これでいい means that an idea, a plan or the recent situation is fine/enough with the situation?

Sorry, I still do not feel that I understand this.

They are going to discuss if "this plan/idea(= これ)" is enough with the situation(= e.g., if we should actually choose this plan/idea or not) or if "the current situation(= これ)" is enough to be acceptable for us or not, or something along the line.

Sorry Toritoribe, I am still failing to see it.

Is there any way to express in English what the で means? I would guess "with", but it does not seem to fit the earlier explanations.

Also, does いい modify これ, or does it modify some other unstated noun? According to the earlier explanations I would guess it modifies これ, but I am doubtful whether これでいい can grammatically support that interpretation.

Grammatically, いい is the predicate and the subject is omitted.

選択は/案はこれで本当にいいのかどうか or 私たちはこれで本当にいいのかどうか

if our choosing this plan/idea is fine or not
if we are fine to accept the current situation or not

Would it be possible to say

私たちはこれで本当にいいのかどうか = if we are fine with (= で) the current situation (= これ) or not

?

When これ refers to "the current situation", yes. I.e., when これ refers to "this plan/idea", the subject of いい might not be "we".

OK, that's some progress. However, I am still confused about the alternative interpretation(s) that you speak of, and I cannot reconcile the various statements in this thread. Would it be possible to give English translation(s) of the alternative interpretation(s) where the following are all marked?:

The meaning of これ
The meaning of で (e.g. "with" or other preposition)
The subject of いい

Can you also confirm that it is impossible for これ to be the subject of いい?

Thank you for your continuing help with this. To you it is very obvious of course, but I am finding it very confusing.

これ: this idea/plan
で: with
the subject of いい: our choice(The interpretation "we" might be acceptable, though. I just pointed out the possibility the choice is not always "fine" with us.)

or

これ: the current situation
で: with
the subject of いい: we

で can't refer to the subject. That's exactly the difference in nuance between これがいい and これでいい.
