Japan's oldest regularly operating train, the Hakone Tozan Electric Railway Moha 1 (モハ１形), will cease operation in January 2028. The Moha 1 model was introduced as the 'Chiki 1' in 1919 when the Hakone Tozan Electric Railway between Hakone-Yumoto and Gōra opened. Its wooden body was refitted in steel in 1950, and the name was changed to 'Moha' (motor, general passenger car). Since then, the power system and interior have been updated, but it retains the appearance of a Showa-era train, including a painted wooden interior, luggage racks, and passenger windows that open widely from below.

The '100-gata' train consisting of three cars—numbers 104 and 106 of the 1-gata, and number 108 of the 2-gata manufactured in 1927—still operates about 10 round trips daily. Due to the lack of air conditioning and fans, the company suspended operations during the extremely hot summer to alleviate the burden on passengers. Due to the scarcity of skilled craftspeople capable of creating wooden beams for the roof section, the company has decided to retire the '100-gata' train. The company announced the retirement more than two years in advance because it is a special train, and we wanted to give fans a long farewell period.'
The company plans to hold various events before the retirement. As the first initiative, the company will sell scale model trains recreating the three operating cars at 1/150 scale in limited quantities of 864 units (price: 11,000 yen including tax). The models will be sold in advance at the 'Railway Festival' held in Kōtō Ward, Tōkyō, on the 11th and 12th, and will also be available at Hakone-Yumoto and Gōra stations from the 14th."
