Hey, guys, I have a problem.

Using Lang-8, I posted a phrase:
ボブは宿題をやります。それで贈り物を得ました. -> Bob does the homework, that's why he got gifts.

But an user didn't understand and said the correct thing is:
ボブは、宿題をやりました。
というのは、プレゼントを貰ったからです。

I really didn't want to separate the phrases and I really didn't understand why he used 貰ったからです. I tried to ask him if I could use 貰いしたからです but he said "no".

At the same time I don't know why から is in the sentence.
Can anyone explain all this stuff to me, please?

Thanks.

The past tense of 貰う is 貰った. The form 貰いした doesn't exist. (Or, did you mean 貰いした by any chance?)

から means "because".

I would say ボブはプレゼントを貰ったから宿題をします instead.

Sorry, I really did mean 貰いました. My mistake.

That's my question: can I use 貰いました instead of 貰った?
And, if I already wrote というのは, why do I have to use から?

Thank you very much.

See ya

You can't use 貰いましたからです. It's too repetitive. 貰ったからです or 貰いましたから is OK.

というのは・・・からです is a kind f set phrase. というのは is used as a conjunction in that case, just like なぜなら or だって.

That's weird. Here's my question: if I use 貰ったからです is it still a informal phrase or only because I use です it means it's formal? That's really interesting...

Sorry, but I still don't understand about using というのは and から in the same sentence. If they mean the same, wouldn't that be repetitive, like:
Bob does the homework, "because" he got "because" gifts.

Sorry if I'm annoying you.

Once more, thank you!
You're helping me A LOT!

Right. That's exactly why I wrote "repetitive".

As I said, というのは・・・からです is a SET phrase. You can't say というのは、プレゼントを貰いました. プレゼントを貰ったからです without というのは is acceptable but a bit awkward, since it sounds as if there're just two sentences without any connection.

I think I got it.
Correct me if I'm wrong: You used both to "join" the phrases, right? To make the 2ª be the "continuation" of the first, right?

I think my last question would be:

As you said: "I would say ボブはプレゼントを貰ったから宿題をします instead. "
Where's the verb "to do"? Could I use: ボブはプレゼントを貰ったから宿題をやります?

Thank you,

bye bye

します is the one. します is the polite form of する.

宿題をする --> 宿題をします

Yes, you can use ボブはプレゼントを貰ったから宿題をやります.

I've seen that やる is "to have sex" as well as "to do". So, should I avoid it and use する instead?

Now I really understand.

Thank you very very much!

Both やる and する can have such meaning in some contexts. However, 宿題をやる and 宿題をする NEVER means so, since the object 宿題 is clearly stated.

宿題をする sounds a bit more polite/formal.
