So anyhow, i was browsing through Amazon.co.uk the other day looking at history books when i stumbled across the pretty famous book "The Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang. I already have this book however i decided to read the people's reviews of it none the less, in particular the reviews people gave the book which only gave a few stars or less.
Some of the comments people said in their low recommendations of the books surprised and intrigued me and made me think a lot more about the subject of the book in general. Here are some of the reviews in particular that interested me;

"Iris Chang's shocking description swept away some intellectual people's thinking ability. But if they lose such ability, they are no longer intelligent. On page 6, the author starts the shocking description. These torture stories are cited from Chinese books and testimonies, so I verified the credibility of the description with background information. The following shows shocking descriptions on page 6 and my verification.

"disembowel women" ... It is called pou-fu in traditional Chinese penalty. China had been executing unique cruel torture for a thousand years. A number of cruel torture methods were written as official methods until 1898, but similar cruel torture was still being implemented after that. For instance, the same methods were said to be implemented at 2-28 Massacre in 1947 and political clampdown during cultural revolution in 1970's. Pou-fu was written in the penalty book as the official execution method of China, and it was often executed in public eyes.

"slice off their breasts" ... It is a series of the slicing methods called luan, which basically slices off every body part. When the objects are ear and nose, these are specifically called ge-reng and ge-bi, respectively. "nail them alive" ... Utilization of nail or so-called zhui-zi was the flagship of traditional execution method of China. Whether they use knife or zhui-zi was often executor's own discretion. "Fathers were forced to rape their daughters, and sons their mothers, as other family members watched." ... Though rape was not official method, the execution forced every female prisoner to remove all cloths and either impaled a stick, seamed genitalia, or sliced it off in public eyes, including those of their parents. It's certainly rape in a broad sense. "live burials" ... huo-mai is also traditional execution method in China. "castration" ... Gong-xing cuts genitalia off. It's not unknown that even Chinese officers had been forced castration by the government. "the carving of organs" ... Carving body parts was popoular among traditional execution methods of China. "roasting of people" ... The method called pao-luo roasts prisoners by copper columns. "hanging people by their tongues on iron hooks" ... jie-she specifically cut tongue off by iron hooks. "get torn apart by German shepherds" ... shou-yao let mad dog bite prisoners to death.

Though I researched over 100 historical materials about Japan, I didn't find any matching traditional Japanese torture. On the other hand, there are a number of historical materials about China that verifies these tortures as China's traditional methods. Though most of them are written in Chinese, these tortures had been implemented in public. Such contradiction casts a serious doubt on the credibility of this book.""

and;

"I can not understand at all why this book has become one of the best-sold books in U.S. One of the reasons is the information in here is extremely unreliable and lack of authenticity. I know many of them have already reveled to be forgery. For instance, the author cited the stories told by Mr. Azuma, the Japanese ex-soldier. But it is already known that his story about this incident was revealed to be his fiction. I also found all the photos listed here were not reliable. I want to insist that this book is filled with vicious forgery."

and;

"I found that this book has many historical errors. For example, on page 21, the author described that Tokugawa ruled Japan by the late fifteenth and early sixteen centuries. But even Japanese school-kids know that the Japanese government by Tokugawa started in 1603. The book not only manipulated the history for 100 years but also blurred basic, definitive historical event.

On the same page, she described, "Perry strode through the capital of the Shogun". But Perry actually arrived at a port in Yokosuka.

On the same page, she described that a single visit forced the Tokugawa to sign treaties. But the Tokugawa actually signed treaties next year.

Some prominent scholars have found that this book contained at least 90 errors in first 64 pages, and stopped the research due to overwhelming number of errors...."

If you read these sorts of reviews, the book appears to be one of many inaccuracies and a very biased account.
I know the Rape of Nanking was a horrific incident that certainly did happen, but i'm now beginning to wonder if people are being presented a rather inaccurate and biased view of the events via this best selling book on the matter.
In particular, in the review where the reviewer lists that many of the practices of killing and torturing Chinese that the Japanese troops practiced, were actually methods of torture and killing that had long been practiced and known by the Chinese themselves- is this true? If so, you could say that the methods the Japanese were using were simply methods that were already practiced by the Chinese themselves in their own society- which begs the question, were the Japanese truly more barbaric than the Chinese? The Chinese are always painted as the victims, and they certainly are to a certain extent, but i think with always painting the Chinese as the victims and the Japanese as the evil barbarians, perhaps we forget that the Chinese could be just as evil at times to their own people.
So are we really dealing with good and evil here, or simply different extremes of evil that has long been known and practiced by both sides?

perhaps we forget that the Chinese could be just as evil at times to their own people.

Chinese themselves are mostly genetically & ethnically unrelated,the population is thinly bonded by " Han culture or Sinicization ".The northern & southern Han-Chinese are 2 different Mongoloid races.

Hello Tokis-Phoenix,

I haven't read the book you mentioned. But I do know that many bad things happen during wars, and sometimes even horrible things. But I also know that sometimes people make their stories bigger, worse and even more horrible than they were already. Sensation, wanting more attention, war trauma's or even carrying on with their mother's war trauma's? I don't know.

I see history as very important for the next generations, so we shouldn't exaggerate.

Have you ever been to Japan?

Whats your point?

I would say i have to agree with you there, you've proven yourself more knowledgeable than i on this subject 👍 .

I have to agree with you there very much- but it is always very difficult to confront people about exaggerating the horrors of war without offending people or being accurate; we can never really say for sure what scale the horrors of Nanking happened on.
But i do think that with the Nazi holocaust of the Jews, that this is one holocaust that was exaggerated and that has been milked too much in modern society- and having said that, its not impossible for the rape of Nanking to have been exaggerated (although of course its certainly terrible and happened on a large scale).

But the main difference between the two holocausts is that the Germans have endlessly admitted and apologized for such events, while the Japanese have no been anywhere near as good as that on that side of things.
But i do wonder sometimes how much the Japanese should really apologize for it- i mean, most Japanese people living today had nothing to do with such events, asking them to apologize for it would be like the Scots asking us English to apologize for what we did to them in old history. I certainly think Japan should openly admit such events, but endlessly apologize too? What could be gained from that exactly is doubtful at times i think.

I think, that Japan did already officialy apologized and admitted that their war had been occupational, didn't they? The prime minister Hosokawa (in the 90s) was the one, am I right?

I'm not sure, do you have any news article links i can read on this- did the Prime minister specifically apologize for the Nanking incident or just the occupation of China in general?

many Japanese had known nanking was faked because she faked all photos and many discriptions which are easy to understand "faked"...
Her crime is heavy oppositely.
The people who had thought it was true came also to doubt it.

That's an overstatement, isn't it? Aren't there just as many Japanese who think Nanking happened, and she didn't certainly fake all the photos, did she?

There is real evidence proving a lot of lies,
However, there is the person who does not want to recognize it.
The truth seems to be inconvenient for them.
And why did she write false evidence?
"The fact was different from her delusion".
Therefore she could not but write a lie.

There is Hosokawa's speech from August 23, 1993.
His statement on the war and Japanese occupation is in this section:
Self-awareness as an International State and Contribution to the International Community

Well whatever the case may be back then, more recently it looks like a Japanes politician (Senior Japanese politician Takami Eto) denied the massacre happening;

"China has angrily rejected claims that the deaths of 300,000 Chinese civilians at the hands of Japanese troops in the Nanking massacre was a "big lie"";

BBC NEWS | World | Asia-Pacific | Fury at Nanking 'lie' claim

There was also another denial of the massacre by the Japanese back in 2000;

"A controversial conference disputing that Japanese troops carried out a massacre at the Chinese city of Nanking in the 1930s went ahead on Sunday despite Chinese protests";

BBC News | ASIA-PACIFIC | Nanking massacre denied

So whether Hosokawa did or did not admit to the massacre happening, it looks like his efforts were wasted by the doubt of more recent prominent Japanese politicians. I can understand the Chinese being offended and upset by this undecidedness and doubt from the Japanese over events which are obviously very important to the Chinese. Japan needs to either wholeheartedly admit or deny the Nanking Massacre, but not continue to give mixed messages on its theories and feelings on the matter.

I don't think she faked all of the photo's because i recognized some of the photo's that had also been pictured in my schools history textbooks about the incident.
I do believe there are a lot of inaccuracies in the book though, and these need to be debated and ironed out so to speak.

The number of citizens' deaths are recorded as 2400. However, there is no mention of causes of death, or whether they were inflicted by either Japanese or Chinese armies.

This event occured in some horrible fashions,death count don't lie.

PRC & Taiwan KMT regime's endless propaganda perpetuates " victimhood complex " to ignorant Chinese masses.

Chinese population faces " double-whammy ",they're victimized by both foreigner aggressions and screwed by own despotic backward incompetent ruling establishments.

Lastly,Chinese are their own worst enemy ( Tokis,it's a dirty little secret of the Chinese people :D 😄).

"Chinese are their own worst enemy !"

Whatever! it is true~

It is not the secret~ ,It's known by many ...

OPEN QUESTIONS FOR HIS EXCELLENCY HU JINTAO,
PRESIDENT OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

May 5, 2008

As enthusiastic supporters of friendly relations between Japan and the PRC, we would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to President Hu Jintao on the occasion of Your Excellency's visit to Japan.

For some years, our organization has been engaged in an investigation into the events that transpired in Nanking in connection with the Battle of Nanking, which took place in December 1937. We are profoundly concerned about the PRC's position on and approach to these events. Additionally, we are exceedingly uncomfortable with the duplicity of the PRC in its pursuit of friendship with Japan on the one hand, and actions that are most unfriendly in nature — the expansion and renovation of the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in 2007 — on the other. Recent research has proven that there is absolutely no basis for the claim that there was a massacre in that city. We respectfully request Your Excellency's responses to five important questions, which follow.

1. Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong never referred to a massacre in Nanking. He made exactly one mention of the Battle of Nanking during a lecture delivered at Yan'an six months after the conflict, reproduced in On Protracted War. Chairman Mao criticized the Japanese for failing to annihilate Chinese troops after having surrounded them. If there had been slaughter in Nanking of a magnitude so great (300,000 civilian victims) as to prompt the description "holocaust of the century," there is not the slightest chance that he would have been silent on the matter. What are Your Excellency's thoughts on the facts presented here?

2. In November 1937, during the Second United Front and prior to the Battle of Nanking, the Nationalist Party established a new section at the Central Propaganda Bureau — the International Propaganda Section. We would like to direct Your Excellency's attention to a top-secret document entitled "Outline of International Propaganda Operations," which states that the International Propaganda Section held 300 press conferences in Hankou between December 1, 1937 and October 24, 1938 (a period that includes the Battle of Nanking); they were attended by 35 foreign journalists and diplomats, on the average. How does Your Excellency explain the fact that not once during any of these 300 conferences was a statement or announcement made to the effect that a massacre had been perpetrated, or that prisoners of war had been unlawfully killed in Nanking? Does Your Excellency, too, find these circumstances extraordinary?

3. The International Committee administered to the civilians remaining in Nanking, who were gathered in the Safety Zone. Records of the International Committee's activities were published in 1939 as Documents of the Nanking Safety Zone by a British company in Shanghai, under the auspices of the Nationalist Government's Council of International Affairs. According to those records, the population of Nanking prior to its occupation by the Japanese was 200,000. That figure remained unchanged, at 200,000, throughout the remainder of 1937. By the end of January, it had increased to 250,000. These statistics completely and utterly destroy the credibility of any accusation of a massacre that claimed 300,000 victims. What are Your Excellency's views on this matter?

4. Among the records in the aforementioned Documents of the Nanking Safety Zone are detailed complaints about misconduct attributed to Japanese military personnel. They include a total of 26 murders, only one of which was witnessed (to that account is appended a note describing the "murder" as a lawful execution). Can Your Excellency reconcile these records with the PRC's claim of a massacre with 300,000 victims?

5. Photographs purported to be evidence of a massacre in Nanking are on display at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, at other exhibitions, and in printed publications. However, Analyzing Photographic "Evidence" of the Nanking Massacre by Higashinakano Shudo (Soshisha, 2005) and other recent scientific research reveal that there are no photographs attesting to a massacre in Nanking. If Your Excellency is aware of photographic evidence of a massacre, please have it forwarded to us so that we may examine it.

On the basis of the factual information contained in these five questions, we are completely and totally convinced that there was no massacre in Nanking. We would greatly appreciate Your Excellency's responses to our questions. Please note that we have selected the open-question format precisely because the matter at hand is clearly one of the prime concerns of many citizens of Japan and the PRC. Our hopes for friendly relations between our two nations, for all generations to come, rest in Your Excellency's hands.

Sigh! It's all in the past of war and hatred. Yes, certainly it's an unforgettable war history. We're the new generations and we ought to bring the world to peacefulness instead of keep looking back to those brutal, inhuman act, terror or whatever you can named it. Let's bring peace to the world!

Hi louiselim,
Thanks for your response.
I love Malaysia and Malaisians!
You Malaysians don't blame us for the "wrongdoings" our army was said to commit. Thanks!

Knowing what happened in the past and understanding those events is the most important way to prevent it from happening again. The new generation should learn more about the atrocities committed during war, not to incite them to hatred, but to help them realize how and why we should prevent this kind of thing from happening ever again. Turning a blind eye to the past is the worst thing we could do. As the "new generation," neither side is responsible for the actions of their parents.

The real tragedy of our generation is conditioning young people to hate one another for what our parents' and grandparents' generations have done. The atrocities of war are proof enough that we should avoid war at all costs. Pigeon-holing accounts of wartime atrocities is just undermining the real lessons we have to learn from our nations' histories.

Iris Chang's book has serious problems yes, and this has been exploited by right wing deniers to the fullest in Japan, not to say that China hasn't also exploited narratives of Nanjing as well. This has been known in the academic community for a long time. However, much of the evidence she used is creditable though.

It's a very political issue but there is very strong supporting evidence for the event and that it did occur, and was quite bad, but it isn't the only example of such behavior during the occupation of China.. Most of the legitimate debate simply has to do with the numbers, as they are difficult to judge.

I recommend this far more than the Rape of Nanking book. Covers the controversial aspects as well, and while I haven't read it all, it is a decent overview so far. You can find much of it on Google books.

To yagyujubei,
You're welcome. Every individual has different comments and opinions about it. I will choose to look forward instead of the past. It's more rational way to think positively rather than the opposite. What's done is done! And yes, we can review the history but not not keep revealing the same matters in detail. I always hate to receive those Nanking Massacre black & white pictures in my personal emails....! Baka desu ne!

Sorry for being late with my reply.

nice gaijin,

Knowing what happened in the past and understanding those events is the most important way to prevent it from happening again.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. A while ago I posted an article on my website which attempted to prove that the so-called Korean "sex slave" case is absolutely groundless. I think that the article will show you how you are correct with your argument. If you are interested, please take a look at my website since the subject is off-topic on this thread. (I was disabled to paste my URL here since my post count was too small. I pasted it in my signature space instead.)

Emoni,

Thanks for letting me know the book.
I think the problem is who were the victims, civilians or POWs.
I admit that a certain number of POWs may have been killed by the Japanese Army if they were really qualified POWs. But civilians? No!
I will end here for now since I'm still on the way of research and have lots of books to read.

louiselim,

Bakade gomen-nasai. (・ω・)
Yes, I forgot that there are 2 or 3 ethnic groups in Malaysia. But that has somehow hit the target. I'm arguing on my web page how this multi-ethnic society caused serious troubles for us with regard to what Japanese did on the Malay peninsula during WWII.
I'm afraid the subject is off-topic on this thread, so please take a look at my website if you are interested.

Edit3: I found my homepage entry field in my profile. Baka desune.
Pull down the menu on "yagyujubei" on left and click on "Visit yagyujubei's homepage!" if you'd like to view my webpage.
Sorry for troubling you all.
