I gather this is talking about some kind of autumn playoff or deciding match between the two (baseball) leagues, but I don't understand the sense in which 通す is used or the grammar of 通しての日本一. How does that part work?


2. A caption for a picture of sumo wrestling:

人気の高い大相撲

How would you translate this?


3. This is a credit for a picture of an old baseball poster:

写真提供：（財）野球体育博物館

What does 財 mean in this context?


4. 日本が経済大国になれたのは、何と言ってもアメリカの おかげだろう。

Translation given: "No doubt it was thanks to America that Japan became an economic power."

Is なれた the potential form of なる "become"? So literally it would mean "could become"?


5. Part of the instructions for a class exercise:

どこで会うかも話し合いなさい。

Does this mean "Also discuss where you will meet"? I am a bit unsure (as usual) about も, in case it is somehow linking here with どこで to give some meaning like "anywhere".

どこでも makes the whole situation different.
どこで会うか means where to meet.
どこで会うかも means (you should also discuss) where to meet (besides when to meet, etc.)

Yes. が is often replaced to の in the adjectival clause. (This の is equivalent to が in Classical Japanese.)

Sorry, my previous post was a quicky I posted just before leaving home for work and I do not have much knowledge in baseball, I left it out.

通して means "through" "across".
両リーグを通しての across the two leagues (Central league & Pacific League)
日本一 No.1 in Japan

These two leagues usually have separate matches but once a year they have a special series to decide the No.1 across the both teams.
