AP Japanese Language and Culture Exam

As some know, College Board is finally making an AP Japanese Language and Culture exam. The course will be offered in the fall of 2006 and the first test will be administered in the spring of 2007. The test will consist of everything in Japanese, except the directions. This AP exam is based off of the "Standards for Japanese Language Learning," which is found in the "Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century."

I. Multiple-Choice
Total Allotted Time: 1 hour, 25 minutes
50% of Total Score
Part A: Listening Comprehension 25 minutes
Part B: Passages for Reading Comprehension 1 hour

Total Allotted Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
50% of Total Score
Part A: Writing (Fill-ins) 15 minutes Writing (Essay) 40 minutes
Part B: Speaking 15 minutes


TOTAL TIME OF AP EXAM: 2 hours, 35 minutes

I think I've been out of college long enough to not know what AP stands for, and how this is different from any other college acredited class.

The AP(Advanced Placement) exam is a course which high school students can take for college credit. Usually these exams will satisfy a university's General Education/Elective (or similar designation) requirement.
The foreign language APs (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish and Japanese) will usually satisfy the 100 levels, although the AP French Wikipedia page claims it is widely compared to a 300 level final exam. Splitting the difference, it should more or less cover an intermediate range.
Compared to the JLPT, it requires knowledge of 410 kanji, so just above N4 and below N3, although I suppose most grammar might remain the same. Having looked at practice/past exams, plain from and keigo make an appearance.
