MEXT Embassy Recommendation 2021

Resurrecting this thread again - how is everyone doing with the quest for letters of acceptance? So far I have the letter from my first choice uni and I'm waiting on a response from my second choice. Though (and tell me if I'm being ridiculous) I'm hoping they won't because my second choice is a national university and my first is private. After looking at Transenz I got the idea they'll preferentially place you in national universities.

Congrats! I got one LOA too and still waiting for the second one. I think it's a good idea to list a national university as a backup.
My universities of choice are both national yet I am still worried about the second screening lol

Hi! Congratulations to everyone who has come this far!
I've received two LoA, both from Private universities, yet I'm still worried if they'd place me to my second choice as my first choice is just waaay more expensive omg

Congrats! I am kinda worried about the second screening as a whole. I hope they don't cut me out lol

Hi got my 2 LOA's from national university. Now it's time for the big wait!!! I'm still worried about the second screenning.

according to the US embassy
the result should be out in FEB and the university placement will be in June 2021 :/
I am kinda confused tbh
Yes, I don't know. Maybe each Embassy has their policy. I asked to my Embassy they told me June. By the way, did you will take the 6months Japanese language program according to your LOA's? I saw that MEXT reduce the amount of slot for my country this year, how many people passed the 1st screening at your country?

yes.
IDK how many people were selected from my country but I was told before the first screening that they are gonna select one or two out of us

This year this thread is so silent. Anyone have an idea if they will inform us about results of second screening before final result in June? Undergraduated already got their results by the way. This big wait is so annoying!!!

I guess the universities are facing the same uncertainties that everyone else is facing at the moment. Frustrating times!

maybe covid affected the number of applicants this year
as far as the second screening is concerned, there are many conflicting news about it, some embassies told their applicants that they should expect a notification in march-April and some said they won't release anything until June so no one really knows anything.
This long wait is truly tiring but hey we have to hang in there

yes, maybe. But i saw many countries canceled the scholarship this year due to covid, it should have few applicants this year than other years. I heard some applicants saying their embassy told them result will be out in end March or Beginning April, still confusing!

Just wanted to drop in again and say hi to everyone in the same boat. This wait! Good to see the typical MEXT pattern of different countries' embassies saying different things. In the UK we have been told we won't hear anything until June.

Frankly, with everything that's going on COVID wise (and as suggested in this thread, more last minute place cuts) I have decided I can't work on the basis that this scholarship is actually going to happen. If it does, that would be nice but in the meantime I'm going to move to an exciting startup job and if I have to quit in August to go do this MEXT thing then that'll be a good reason for quitting at least.

What countries are you thinking of here? Last year when I was applying to this and also preparing to apply for Singapore, Korea, and China scholarships what struck me was that all those went ahead and Japan was a bit of a stand out case in its attitude to foreign students.

Countries like Nepal and United Arab Emirates. MEXT seems to not have clear communication with Embassies.

Having a plan B is always smart :)
as far as MEXT is concerned the results for the undergraduate are out already so I don't think they will cancel the whole thing but reducing the number of accepted applicants is still possible. Let's hope for the best.

Hello everyone!

I know that everyone (including me) is worried about the second screening and about wether the slots for the scholarship can be reduced last minute.

However, I would like to bring some positivity to this thread as according to the embassy in my country and in some others - places had been already reduced before the application process started. And as the budget for 2021 was already decided at the time of application, there should not be any additional cuts. Also, as someone has already mentioned, many countries couldn't hold exams and interviews due to corona so those slots are empty as well. Furthermore, the application for Nikkensei (Japanese Studies scholarship for 1 year) has started this month - and I think if they actually wanted to cut their expenses they just wouldn't open the application for this program at all.

Of course, I cannot guarantee anything and this is purely my vision of the situation, but I am pretty confident that we are all going to be fine:)

your take is rational and makes sense but man this long and tiring wait makes you think of every horrible scenario imaginable lol

Okay okay, resurrecting this thread to check in once again about how people are holding up!

How are we all feeling? Any news on the second screening front?

Personally, I'm starting to feel that it is pretty likely there won't be any issuance of student visas in time for September starts. Whether this means there'll be a mass deferment to April is an interesting question a few people have mentioned on FB.

the undergrad applicants of this year who were supposed to travel this April will be traveling in late May ( they already received their flying tickets and visas) so I'm hoping that we get the same treatment if we get accepted

I'm Applying for 2022 any help/tips from those who have already won will be appreciated.

So does this mean MEXT students can be an exception when it comes to entering Japan? (Because as far as I know no other students have been able to receive new visas)
