News Yahoo Japan to be unavailable to most of Europe

Honestly, the EU's GDPR is one of the most non-sensical and half-baked European pieces of legislation. Yahoo Japan has now decided to make its website inaccessible to EU and several non-EU nations as of April 2022 (affecting only 1% of its users).

An official from Yahoo Japan said on Feb. 1 that the company decided it has become too difficult to continue servicing the region considering the costs of complying with local laws and regulations. The areas affected include member nations of the EU, Britain, Iceland and Norway. The Japanese website offers a search engine, news, travel and shopping services, among others. Other Yahoo-related websites offered in local languages will not be targeted. The change is expected to mainly affect those who use the Japanese version of the website while on business or private travel in Europe. Only about 1 percent of Yahoo Japan users access the website from these areas. Yahoo Japan said it will continue to offer its email services, but users can no longer obtain new email addresses starting on April 6. The company did not specify which laws and regulations it had in mind when making the decision. But it appears to be affected by recent moves in Europe to tighten regulations on the protection of personal data. The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which took effect in 2018, requires not only businesses based in the EU but also those outside of it to implement stricter personal data management and step up measures to prevent information leaks. Violators face hefty fines.

thomas, could I be forgiven to ask for a link on your site where you have broken down your conclusions on the topic you post about above regarding the nature of the legislation you make note of in terms that I can't really accept as technical in nature?

I have seen you had time for doing more posts since my question put forth to you here and I know you are very busy, but I believe I have waited a properly polite period of time to receive an answer to my question

I believe in Online Communities as being a next step in the advancement of human civilization and I have this notion persons that have put themselves into a position of being an Online Community leader have certain responsibilities to the Community.

I find the idea of studying the evolving laws and regulations that govern what we are allowed to do within our Online Communities as being vital to the future well-being of Online Communities such as JREF.

West of Japan we have a nation of immense power to alter all manner of ways humans are allowed to use the Internet and their rules and regulations are worthy of careful study and also archiving. I refer to the People's Republic of China and I am not so sure how far you are going to allow us in this Online Community to discuss their manner of regulating that which their national government has control over in the Online Communities allowed to exist within that government's borders. Maybe beyond their borders, but that branch of the discussion becomes difficult.

The EU has also written rules and regulations that affect Online Communities and the manner in which persons like yourself are allowed to "run" your Community, and so that is why I asked for a deeper assessment from yourself on your views of this topic and thought maybe you had written on the topic elsewhere, and maybe not necessarily on this Community platform.

Might I be allowed to show you the manner in which I do research on what I view as a critical topic? The topic I asked you about because of your written statement related to the EU regulations.



Might I ask again if you have written any papers on this topic on another site of the Internet?
