Rape convictions:
Year 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990
JAPAN 702 661 566 589 594
CHINA 35004 32125 28520 28515 33348

Numbers are from UNODC and Nutrisystem Can Unite In A Battle Against Addiction

More recent numbers from the 7th United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, rate of people convicted for rape per 100,000:

Year 1998 1999 2000
Japan 0.57 0.57 0.54
China 2.00 2.01 1.93

The question is of course, how many rapes are reported & how does the justice system react on rape allegations, but this is at least some clue that the situation in Japan is not really as bad as you picture it.

The question of rapes in WWII is entirely different, though, but I think this has been discussed in other threads already.

Traditions are different in different countries, traditional is not the same as anti-sexual. Japan is traditionally more open regarding sex. China was traditionally more open than it is nowadays.

Every country is unique in one way or another.

I'm afraid we can't just take your word for it...do you have some statistics to back up what you are saying? Right now you just sound trollish... :?

And give us your working definition of the terms involved. Japanese has three or four words that could refer to rape depending on the circumstances, ranging from a higher threshold then used in the West to something involving recording sex acts for extortion. Boko most closely fits the classic violent assault by a stranger ambushing a woman often while she is outside and alone. Gokan approaches the Western legal definition of nonconsensual sex in legal terms, but isn't commonly used in the media or public discourse. Okasu, literally encompassing everything from severe sexual harrassment, groping and trying to have sex with to actual sex, can also be broadly construed as 'rape' by some victims. And then there is the katakana "レイプ," used in referring to simply videotaping or photographing consensual sex acts for a criminal purpose as well as violation or penetratation but with a less serious inference than 'gokan' or 'boko', perhaps closer to molestation or statuatory rape (?) in English

Actually, this is true for the whole world, I suppose. Many women (men maybe even more so) are embarrassed & ashamed, when they have been raped. Hence nobody should know what happened. It needs a good deal of education &/or individual courage to report being raped.

chinese if raped , more would ask cop
This may well be possible, but I have some doubts. First, it probably wouldn't make up for the statistical difference (in China 4x the rate of Japan).
Second, sex is still quite a taboo subject in China & keeping your face is at least as important as in Japan, which makes it pretty improbable that the rate of reported rapes is that much higher.
Even more so if a virgin would be raped, considering the fact that virginity is very important in China, which would put even a higher threshold to reporting such a crime than in Japan.

But you can try to convince me with some numbers.

the facts of up url is total wrong
SINGAPORE 6 3 . 4 1

could you image only one raped in one year in singapore ?
where you find that wrong data , and take it as facts ?

If you read carefully, the statistics are per 100,000 people. So the data says there is one rape conviction in Singapore for every 100,000 people. A good guess of Singagpore's populations is 4,608,595 from the CIA World Factbook so that means there are about 46 rape convictions per year in Singapore (unless my math is wrong). This does not strike me as a low number considering the harsh nature of the Singapore criminal system and the general low levels of crime in general (so I am told).

A paper on decisions not to report sexual assault

http://www.aic.gov.au/publications/proceedings/27/dussich.pdf

<snip>

It is likely that the decisions not to report rape in Japan are similar to
conditions also identified in other countries but in different degrees. In pre-study
interviews with Japanese rape counsellors, college students (male and female),
housewives, and social scientists it was learned that the cultural pressures to
defer to family, friends, acquaintances, neighbours, supervisors, and persons of
greater status, males and older persons, are stronger than in most Western
cultures and may significantly influence rape reporting and non reporting. It is
interesting that the book written about rape and its myths by members of the
Tokyo Rape Crisis Centre (1990) avoids mention of reporting phenomena
entirely. The pressure for women to act with deference and altruism (Koss 1990)
weakens the likelihood of victims reporting. In other cultures the majority of
rapes are perpetrated by acquaintances: thus, it is reasonable to assume that a
large number of unreported acquaintance rapes also exist in Japan. The majority
are date rapes, rapes by colleagues, supervisors, family and friends. Also
included should be marital rapes and child sexual abuses; however, in Japan
these types of victimisations have not received much recognition as yet
(Morosawa 1991).

</snip>

I think that this is so unfortunate and also fairly disgusting, to just overlook or let things pass like that. It's hard enough reporting it in the first place, then to have to deal with all the pressures that entails.

Why do you come up with this thread? you want to put japan down? you had bad expierence?

as you put this thread your information is proven to be wrong!!!!! and as i think that

but many japanesed raped , they would not ask police
chinese if raped , more would ask cop

is wrong, i think there wont be a big differnce of this. so if you calculate again,,,, china would still be higher in rapes then japan....

just wonder: Why this thread? :?

"why the sex attitute is so free and bold. so many av ?"

Well... if I were to follow that logic it would certainly explain a lot about me and my secret collection of DVDs stashed away from prying eyes... *mimics Gollum's voice...* 😌

I think this thread is merely a hate japan thread. He dont like Japan so he tries to bad mouth it. He has no facts to back up his claims and its really just as childish as name calling.

In the process he looked silly.

Well, jim83 is a thing of the past. That is what happens to people like him here at JREF. They become a thing of the past. Hope certain people keep this in mind.

Btw Rachel, you still owe me those three DVDs I lent you with the... DOH! Did I say that out loud just now!?! Woops...

Shhhhhhh! I'm going to get you for that. Where's my whip?

yes he does seem to hate japan so why is he here?

p.s. OMG!! I have a spice girls song stuck in my head!!!! aaaahhhhh!!!!! get it out!! *gotta get with my friends*

Of all the Japanese women I've known closely (enough to talk about this subject), I would estimate that slightly over half of them have been raped or molested in some way. This ranges from simple densha fondling, to one girl having been raped at age 6, again at age 8, and again in her 20's.
None of them ever reported anything to the police. They also seemed to imply that if the girl knows the rapist in any way, the cops won't take it seriously. What is worse, I've gotten the "he just couldn't control himself" excuse. This excuse works if one is a farm animal, but not for a man.
I don't mean to sound bitter or negative; I just get tired of hearing these stories. But I think this issue needs to be talked about. To me, rape is a more serious crime than, say, jaywalking or pot posession.

I'm not sure, but wasn't the US somewhat like that decades back ?
