The Making of Modern Asia
From the end of empire to the rebirth of China, from the streets of Tokyo to the beaches of Thailand, a journey through Asia's history stops at specific times and places. Reflections on those moments combine to form the theme of this year's summer double issue, which is introduced here by KISHORE MAHBUBANI, one of Asia's leading thinkers on its past窶蚤nd future

Caster.... Have you ever considered using an instant messenger that is similar to MSN or is MSN? I would like to help you with speaking english, but it would require a faster method of speech.

And "other countries" could mean anything. It all depends on what you are attempting to say. It is similar to some of your phrases.

Example: What if I said, "人です"? What would you think? You'd probably say, "Are you talking about me, yourself, or a friend?" Right? If i said "僕は" infront of "人です" you'd understand what i ment, right? Basically, the sentance (or clause if it's the same sentance) before the clause that uses the word "other" tells what other does not represent. "Other" means "everything else." But if a noun follows "other" it defines what the restrictions are. For example: "The other countries..." In that clause, the word "countries" follows the word "other." That means that it means "every country that was not talked about in the last sentance (or clause)" rather than just "everything else." Sometimes you'll come across "the other one(s)." Usually then it is defined in the conversation what the 2 (or more) things that "other" is restricted to.

Dude, I believe in my early twenties I would probably agree with you. The level of testosterone seems to be statistically associated with one's penchant for social Darwinism. OK, I admit Godpp is a statistical anomaly. ;) After all social Darwinism seems to be justified with the lofty goal of human progress.

The problem is, ultimately "human progress" should intend to (at least attemp to) benefit ALL humans instead of a specific group (country, race, class, religion, etc.) . Once you start justifying killing one human being for the benefit of another, the table could turn around easily in a few years. Throughout human history, it seems that all human groups, regardless of ethnic group or religion, seem to be roughly equally capable of and effective at killing. I believe today we as civilized humans frown upon canibalism for exactly this reason.

At the dawn of WWII, Nazis in both Germany and Japan had very lofty justifications for their military agressions. It's interesting that some of the views you expressed here, Nurizeko, fall very much in line with those justifications.

Obviously some people don't learn much from history after all.

Japan went to war because it felt it had no other choice.
Though thinking about it, I wonder why they didnt bother exploration in already occupied territories.
And it was a damn stroke of luck the American carriers were out of harbour durring the attack, damn lucky...

Really? What were they? I've only heard that the government thought that japanese were better than everyone else.

Is there a factor of government propaganda/political agenda in the mass Chinese animosity toward Japan? There very well may be, as I alluded to in my earlier post in this thread.
Is China a country that practises freedom of speech with a western European standard? Absolutely not. As a Chinese national I am very much frustrated by this.

But it is overly imaginative (in a very odd way) to conclude that China's recent hardline stance toward Koizumi's administration and the Chinese mass dislike of Japan are all caused by China's lack of freedom of speech. I appreciate your advocacy of democracy but find your simple-mindedness entertaining.

In fact, some of the most vocal criticizers of the Japanese right-wing movement are exiled Chinese dissidents living in the US.

Now Han Chan, try and explain the Korean people's animosity toward Japan, with your freedom of speech theory.

The recent attacks of the embassies with passive policemen as onlookers were very similar to what we saw a few years ago when a chinese croud attacked the Japanese Embassy. It seem to be a patern in undemocratic countries where there are no freedom of speach.
If anyone tries to demonstrate for human rights or the rights of the tibetans, they end up in jail in no time, but if the choose to attack the Emabssy of Japan - nothing happens!
So to the question: Why some chinese hate Japan? Because there is no real freedom of speach and respect of human rights in China. And they choose to believe that the japanese who show disrespect towards China and the feelings of chinese actually repressent Japan! They do not - we are talking about a small group of nationalistic right-wingers, who seek provocation.

The Nazi Germans set out to build a thire Reich where Europeans of the worthy races can build civilization without corruption from Jews, while Imperial Japan believed it was building a "Great Commonwealth of East Asia". Japan also believed it was liberating Asia from their European colonists. Both countries, of course, faced the trivial practical problem of obtaining the fossil fuels and ores in other people's backyard. But hey, for their lofty cause, it's OKAY to annhilate a few, or, many, people.

The history of Japan-Asia is a twisted one. Japan's first PM who defeated China's then seemingly stronger Navy, Ito Hirobumi , actually contemplated serving as a consultant to the Chinese emperor after the first Sino-Japan war. In the minds of (at least) some Japanese strategists and regular people during WWII, Japan was indeed doing Asia a favor.

Regretably, after 60 years, hundreds of millions human lives lost on both sides and the only two A-bombs ever detonated in a war, some Japanese still agree with those views and think of Imperial Japan's military defeat as pure lack of luck. I don't want to beat the dead horse of comparing post-war Germany and Japan, but it seems hard for Mr. Koizumi's political base to attain the level of maturity or sophistication as a people to separate nationalism from Imperialism.

Now we're about 32 miles off-topic. Point is, in much of human's history, people wage wars and start killing in the name of a righteous cause: God, truth, progress, democracy, national survival...

Back to the topic of why some people hate Japan: I believe if Japan's leaders show the courage to face up to Japan's military past, if we (China, Japan, SK) all sit down and work out how to live together and share the goodies mother nature has blessed us with, we'll all be just fine.

Well said.

Especially when Japan's right-wingers keeps cranking out garbage like The Rape of Nanking : Chinese Propaganda to deny the WWII atrocities committed by Imperial Japan's arm, it is really not that hard to figure out why Asians from several countries despise Japan not only for its WWII past, but for its present day denial of the past.

A NY-Times article titled "Pointless Provocation in Tokyo" (http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F60916FB3E5B0C7B8DDDA90994DD404482) on this exact point comes to mind.

(1)There are many million surviving Chinese families were VICTIMIZED by Japanese Imperial Army have " residual " hatred toward Japan with resentment direct or indirect at Japanese people.Don't ignorantly equate " no freedom of speech or blind nationalism " to all round Japan-hating,there are many anti-Communist Chinese held grudges against Japan for mass destructions caused by the war with Japan and great harms inflicted on Chinese civilian population.
(2)This scenerio only applies to right-wing ultra-conversative Japanese constantly rehash old WW2 wounds by despicably denied of many attrocities committed by cruel and savage Japanese Imperial Army.

Caster,
I think you are right in that the animosity toward Japan is mainly a phenomenon in Korea and China, which happen to be the two countries that suffered from Imperial Japan's atrocities the most in WWII.
I also agree with someone else who said that "hate" is really the wrong word here. For example, I am old enough to remember the amicable Sino-Japan relationship in the 70's ~ 80's on both a diplomatic and a people level.
I think the current atmosphere of distrust and animosity between China and Japan, SK and Japan is a function of practical issues such as strategic interest in the western pacific, and the stance taken by Koizumi's administration. If Mr. Koizumi's successor finally shows enough wisdom and courage to dicard Japan's imperial baggage, I believe the EA3 (east asia 3) will figure out how to be friends again.

caster51-san, as one with S-E Asian roots (father from Singapore), let me assure you that there is still significant residual antipathy in SE Asian countries, towards the japanese for their WW2 atrocities and recalcitrance. Citizens in places like Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore DID not escape the depraved, bloodthirsty marauders you call the imperial "soldiers"..

Don't assume that their admiration for the Japanese economic success and the subsequent emulation, comes with ambivalence or forgiveness to the widespread and wanton rapes+tortures+killings perpetuated there.

Ok, Even though there is significant antipathy in all S-E Asai, Japan is thought as favorable country by 70-80% of people in those contries. But only Majority of people in Korea and China think Japan as infavorable contory. That's why I think Korea and China is different from other ASIA countries. I guess thoes countory accept what Japan has been done after WWII, and Only Korea and China cannot do.

(1) Oh ... 70%-80% of ILLITERATE population in SE Asia are favorable toward Japan,it's quite a compliment !

* you purposedly left out one bit part of Japan's game plan in South Pacific,Japanese gained support from Malaysia nationalists on the promise of free from British colonialism.

(2) Koreans and Chinese are East Asians, where their countries geographically closer to Japan's deadly sprees of " utmost cruelty and savagery ".

They interviewed the people in China, Taiwan, Korea, Thai, and Singapole.
You can see the people in Taiwan and Thai and Singapole viewed japan as favorable country.

Also, it is the pull by BBC.

You can also see the response from all asian coutories except Korea and China is favorable to Japan.

You said Korea and China is closer to Japan, but Japan had never been in the war against Korea, and very limited casuality in China because there is not much heavy fighting. Most of casuality in Japan army and navy were in S-E Asia, battle against UK and US militaly. And if you still think Korea and China had "utmost cruelty and savagery", please tell me why people in Taiwan had good image to Japan?

Don't tell me your personal opinion, but show me the some kind of 3rd party reliable sourse like I did.

To claim that 70 - 80% (of the population in South East Asia are illiterate*) is not funny - it's racist!

*I added the content in the bracket later - so that everone including ricecake will understand why I call his statement racist.

Have you ever regard Japanese deniers of Nanking Massacre as pure racists ?

Korea and China experienced "utmost cruelty and savagery" by the hands of Japanese.

Do you have good eye vision or not,China and Korea are geographically closest to Japan islands if you look at the map of Asia.Savagedly gang-raped of Korea Kingdom's sovereign Empress Min by her Japanese assassin and accomplices on her last breathes, just proved my point. There are archived photos, actual war footages ( including heavy bombings of Shanghai by Japan Air Raids ) and documents detail many battles fought on China mainland between Chinese and Japanese armies, countless civilian casualties in Nanking Massacre carried out by Japan's Imperial Army. There have been some conscious-minded former Japanese soldiers made annual trips to city of Nanking for " forgiveness ".

Oh,interestingly you went " dementia " on Japan biological warfare death lab Unit 731 in old Manchuria !

One question, did you ever file complains to Western-interest mass media outlets typically depict and ridicule SE Asians as " ignorant third-world people " with high illiteracy level and endlessly project a falsehood of no middle-class population in many Far East nations, these images absolutely qualify as institutionalized racism in Western-controlled media circles ?

Those countless civilian deaths slaughtered by Japanese are in hell where your Imperial Army sent them,is this a public announcement or what !

This post validates a trolling behavior, definitely discredit all your posts here mainly centered on Japanese's Yamato origin possible heritage tie to European/Jew and battling on WW 2 revisions.

Without doing any research....I remember reading that at least one "Japanese atrocity committed in China" has been proven to be false.

I'm not saying that all of the purported attrocities didn't happen, but it's hard to tell the truth from the lies. You can not trust anyone.
