In Germany almost every game depicting violence and gore is banned or cut in many ways, so that you won't even recognise it being a 18+ game. Taking Gears of war as an example, you can't officially buy this game because it has not been published here. But what is even worse: you can't gain access to dlc (maps for example unless you choose to download them via VPN). So did I.
In my opinion, every mature person should have the right to pick whatever he likes to unless it doesn't contain any garbage like racism). I will never buy a game that has been published (cut versions) only for the german marketplace.

Lol...if they ban violent games, they minus will remove all violence from television as well as the internet...heck, maybe the should quarantine everything we do, and turn this entire nation to a tyrant country.

Hehe, go read 1984. Its a book by George Orwell, I believe (someone correct me if im wrong, I think inm gettign authors confused  )

But as the others have said, if you or your child does not have the common sense to tell a video game from RL, you dont deserve to be playing the games, and should be checked out for mental problems. Ive played violent video games (damn near every one that people point out when this comes up; Manhunt, GTA, GoW, Postal, Doom etc) and I know 100% that those are fantasy.

All it takes is a little CS to know that what your playing is only a game, and if you take what happens it to serious, you shouldnt be allowed to roam freely in this world without supervision.

Well, this discussion is kinda... "classic." The Crusaders of Moral BS and the Super Liberals.
I see this issue clearly. Idiots should not be given games at all. Thats it.
I personally dislike shooters, but still I find pleasure in hack 'n' slash gore for example. Yes, I enjoy tearing people apart in God of War, and I enjoy slitting throats in Tenchu.
As long as im not doing it in the real world, Moral Warriors can piss off.

This kinda fits in with how people on MMO's (WoW, FFXI for instance), they take things WAY too serious, and 99% of the time, its the 25-40 year olds playing a 'Teen' game that get pissed off when someone younger than 21 tries to join a guild or participate in a raid.

Thos same people are the ones who if you arent perfect and didnt spend 4k on a computer to get rid of lag for a MMO, say you shouldnt be playing.

They fit int he same category as needing to get a life and realise its only a game. Something meant for enjoyment, not re-enactment IRL.

My approach is different. If you don't have a decent connection, decent computer, and you'll lagg out and disconnect while your whole raid is raping something huge and vicious, you shouldn't apply for raiding guilds. Thats all.
You said it yourself, its meant for enjoyment. While some people may enjoy being massacred by foes, most guilds/clans don't.

I said that I wouldn't care either way.

After all, the games that have excessive violence are almost all first-person shooters, which I hate. Not because of the blood and gore, but gameplay makes a game for me, and they have none.

If I could not hack my way through zombies with a machette after a hard day I don't know what I would do.

No liberal will ever take away this priveledge from me.

Hey, got an idea for a game. You have to 'save violent games' by killing a lot of liberal politians and the censorship board by any means necessary and with an array of weapons.

Anyone game?

I'm not a Grand Theft Auto guy myself, but I believe in violence in video games and other forums of media.

But I believe violence should be for the effect of the story for me to enjoy it, or have some sort of 'deeper meaning', not just violence for the sake of violence. Call me elitists or even 'emo' if you like, but I like classy with my violence.

Now that's not to say that I have a problem with their taste if they enjoy unclassy violence, but god if I don't share their gritty lowbrow taste.

Iie! I love violent video games! They make up most of the games I play! Personally, I think banning them would cause a humonguous outrage amongst a lot of people in the entire world. Just cos some stupid people cannot tell the difference between video games and real life doesn't mean the rest of us have to suffer :auch:

I voted against, and definitely wouldn't mind if they banned video games, gave the kids a football, cricket bat, post a traffic control officer at the entrance to the street, and away we go!

Bring back communication skills.. The kids are so lacking nowadays.

Possibly old fashioned ideas?
I agree with you,two weeks ago i watched i video clip for Alliens VS Pretator on the Xbox360,This game is very violent.

I do not think violent games caurse people to do bad things, the fact is the spirit of youth can be impressinable but let's be honest to say you killed someone hurt, as was done in a game must mean that you have a sandwich short of a picnic begins

Psychologists have found a link between playing violent video games and aggressive behaviour:

Violent video game play makes more aggressive kids, study shows

I think that this study is backward, it is very well possible that as people become more violent that they enjoy violent video games more.

another possibility is that these studies were done on children going through puberty, which naturally causes violence and detachment.

The violence could also come from the desensitization that occurs because of the news, causing people to not know much else than violence.

I personally believe that violent video games are good for society and makes it safer I know after a long stressful day, I like to sit down and play Medal of Honor, or Grand theft auto because I know that I can do whatever I would like in the game because it is just a game.

For example many of the famous serial killers of the 80's and 90's (Zodiac killer, Ted bundy, Unibomber) did not have these games to play, so they could not get their rush, hence the hedonistic category of serial killers (Serial killer - Wikipedia). Could it be possible that if a potential hedonistic serial killer had violent video games they might not ever kill because they can get a rush from games.

Also, a majority of the time, violence (especially gang violence) occurs in poverty stricken areas, where many people do not have the money to buy new game systems or games. meaning some of the most violent of people do not have these games to effect them.

Lastly, using myself as an example. I have been playing violent video games such as grand theft auto, medal of honor, or even Legends of Zelda if you really want to get down to the roots, since about the age of 7. and now, almost 11 years later I am a good student who even when under achieving passes all of my classes with acceptable grades (A's and b's). I have never drank, nor have I ever done drugs, I have never never been in a fight (save the 3 years of martial arts I took). I take college level classes and I am just going into my senior year of high school. I would continue but I do not like talking about myself.

People who want violent video games banned just don't understand how much of an infringement on personal rights that is. Here in the United States we call that the "Nanny State" or "Nanny Government" mentality.

The government should never be allowed to tell people what to think. This kind of liberal left wing bass-ackward idealism sickens me to the core.

Countries like Australia and Germany ban every gem that comes out and people wonder why those countries are so lame...

This kind of liberal left wing bass-ackward idealism sickens me to the core.

I believe you are mistaken, the idea of banning violent games is a very conservative idea. The major distinction I see between liberal and conservatives is that liberals are more for individual rights, where as conservatives are more for societal rights.

What I mean by this is a liberal would rather encourage killing in a game, than allow people to own a real weapon. Conservatives however want everyone to have the right to own a gun, but not to have the right to kill someone in a game. Both groups have a noble cause, but neither likes to see the other sides point, and it is that closed minded thinking from both sides that sickens me to the core.

Also, I do not know much about German politics, but I know for a fact Australia is an extremely conservative country.

I hope this cleared some things up

You are incorrect in saying that liberal parties want individual freedoms and conservative parties want societal freedoms. I am a conservative person who believes in individual freedom and I follow the teachings of like-minded individuals.
Conservativism is based entirely around the notion of a small, limited central government that does not impose irrational and invasive laws on citizens. Liberalism follows the idea that individuals can sacrifice (or be forced to sacrifice) their own rights to "better" the nation as a whole. If you don't believe me, look at politics in the United States ever since the last presidential election and you will see. That, or you can examine the history of every single democratic or liberal president vs every conservative or republican president.
Even the words themselves are explanatory - LIBERAL goverment - puts out more legislation. CONSERVATIVE - is conserved.
The term Nanny State and their way of blackholing individual rights applies only to a liberal government. Both sides may want to have certain bans, but you cannot argue that the right wing is as bad as the left wing in this regard. Again if you listen to any radio, read any political article, or watch any newscast in the United States, you will know this.

not going to read through all of these, but I assume people think that violent video games, are rotting society, causing more violence etc.

To me that is a bunch of BS, and sounds like another scapegoat for people who do not like taking responsibility for their own actions or inadequate parenting etc.. so they spread the blame of societies ills on to lame excuses like this.
