Who's for or against violent video games

Here's my take on it.

There are people going around trying to ban violent video games, just because some mentally disturbed person can't tell the diff between Reality and video games and shoots everyone. I have been playing violent vid games for years and years, and not once did I think of going outside too steal cars, pick up hookers and kill them for my money back, or go on a shooting spree. People would already have to be mentally unstable to do that.

Some people want to take violent video games off the market. Well if you do, don't forget to take the News off the air, all movies with any trace of violence or sexual innuendos. Stop taking your kids to school, since they learn most of that stuff from school. Get rid of many great novels that include those topics. As a matter of fact, let's get rid of cars, since cars can get into accidents and show a hint of violence and blood. (I know, EXTREME, isn't it?)

I agree that violent Vids like GTA and God of War etc.. need to be rated according to their nature (which means a certain age can purchase a certain game), and that kids shouldn't be playing those games. But that's the parents job to make sure that doesn't happen.

People will be believe in what they want to believe. Have you tried America's Army for the PC? I can't believe the game is totally funded by the US Army to train people how to become perfect American Soldiers! That's messed up! After playing a few hours of that, I wonder what percentage of players think "Hey! I wanna shoot me some real commies now!". If violent video games are good enough for the army, is it good enough for the rest of us? Maybe.

Most likely the Army is trying to recruit people using the video game. They try to get people pumped up and start hating the "enemy", and that might make them think that they are ready to fight in a war and they would join the army. I don't know though. They probably have a bunch of subliminal messages within the game.

Banning games just because they are violent are stupid. I've met cats and dogs smarter than people who tried to ban violent games. If they have to ban games becuase they are violent, then why don't they ban board games, movies, pictures and etc with violence or a wrong/disturbing message.

Removing violence from games would make games unnecesary. We play games to experience stuff that we would never experience in our real life, if the only games out there would be non-violent games like Barbie race and ride and etc. then who would even consider buying a console/ computer?

Well said Da Monstar. Yes, If they are going to take away violent v-games then they should stop putting the News on the air, movies and anything that is considered offensive. I will say this. There are some extra sensitive people out there that will find even the slightest thing offensive. If it were up to them, there would be no color.

Im not saying that the people against violent v-games are sensitive. But they need to realize that if you get rid of one thing, then everything that is even remotely associated with it should be taken away as well. Because if they're not taken away with the games, then there was no use taking anything a way to begin with.

Violent video games stop me from being violent in real life as they are a good way to release stress. Purely from personal choice I don't like to play games where the violence is too realistic - I couldn't play that army game you are talking about and kill real-looking people. But I love to blast the heads off zombies and rabid monsters. I do feel that the prostitute thing in GTA crossed the line of what is acceptable to me. Not that it should be banned, I just worry about the kind of person who could think that was a fun thing to put in a game.

I don't play many violent video games, or many video games in general actually, but I think banning them is way overboard.

At most, I'd favor not selling them to kids until they're a certain age.

First off, you shouldn't ban violent games--the 100 kills time trial mode in Bushido Blade 2 is the only reason I've never killed anybody IRL. XD

I totally agree with Mitsuo's OP. I'm don't play video games, but to suggest that violent games should be banned is quite ludicrous, for good reasons which people have already given. Of course, there should be control on the rating and not allow too young people to buy the most violent games. But a lot of films are just as bad or worse, and they are not really questioned.

I think the real problems lie when people are mentally unstable anyway, as Mitsuo said, enough to want to kill for real, and if they get some kind of kick out of watching someone suffer and/or die. Which I would think applies to a tiny, tiny minority of people who play video games. I worry more about those kind of people who make/watch snuff movies, and buy those top-shelf mags that feature photos of people who have been horribly maimed. That is sick, to me - a different thing from games which are cathartic and not masquerading as real life.

I love Grand Theft Auto.... however im not really good enough to start shooting frenzies without getting killed in response, or caught by the cops (when im playing the game). In reality I hate guns, they terrify me, but its fun to steal planes, fly into the mountains, go swimming in the river, change clothes, hair styles, get tattoos.... oh yeah, I like the skydiving too on G.T.A.
What I like most about it, is that you can just wander around for hours without actually killing anything. Yeah, im boring... oh well.
I like Maple Story too... you get to kill big killer mushrooms. Anyone know if it comes in english version? I dont always understand what the 10 year olds playing it are saying to me.

I can't see why people still are complaining about to much violent in games. They have an age limit on the games, so it shouldn't be a propblem. And if they can't control who is buying the games, then they can tell the stores, that they have to see ID before the costumer can buy his/her game. Then the stores can see if the person is old enough to buy the game. And as Monstar said, if they ban violent games, ban the violent movies first etc.

I`ve played GTA,and I`m 13...but if we tried to get rid of violence,wouldn`t people only want it more?and of course you don`t see me on the news for killing people after playing very violent video games,for me its a way to release stress...otherwise I might be more psycho than I already am...

Yeah, there was a case a while back in Oakland with these guys who called themselves the "Nut Cases", who went around robbing and killing people "for fun".

When they were caught, they talked about how they loved to play grand theft auto, and then go out and do the stuff in real life when they got bored with that.

My first thought after reading that was "Oh sh*t, they're going to start whining about GTA again."

Don't get me wrong, I've never played GTA, and don't intend to--it's just not my kind of game--but I'm sick of people blaming the music or the games someone plays for their actions.

Doesn't it occur to anyone that someone who likes shooting people in real life would also enjoy a video game about shooting people? I don't know how many soldiers on leave--still in their fatigues--I've seen playing the first person shooters at the local arcade.

Violent video games is very brief. That could mean any game that shows any resemblence to a violent video game.
Violent video games are fun to play, and it's not because they are violent. I'd ban a game where you rape someone in it, but that is the crossing point between immoral, and moral.

Lol...if they ban violent games, they minus will remove all violence from television as well as the internet...heck, maybe the should quarantine everything we do, and turn this entire nation to a tyrant country. In all due honesty, it's stupid to be banning violent games, and the whole excuse of "They Killed so and so, and one of the big influences was because of "Insert name of game" and they thought it was cool." blah blah arguement case is pretty lame. Given influence can be part, but ultimately in the end, it's you yourself that did it, it wasn't the game that made you do it. It was also your own thought and mind that influenced you to believe in it and do it in the first place.

So to me, to blame your actions upon another thing is ridiculous, in the end, when you stand before everyone and say "I did this, because of so and so, or I did this because I was told too." Will this comply in the end? Think before you act.

Games should be Rated, and strong voilence should not be in this games so should be banned!

Secondly, the parents should watch their children!!! Is it really that difficult? how can you watch, how your child is sitting behind his playstation for 4 hours a day playing this kind of games and do nothing.... guess there should be more schools of HOW TO BE A PARENT...

But I am not a parent myself yet, so I can't say THat much about it!

If certain parents would just know what their children are playing, then there should be no problem.
The rating system that they have right now, kind of seems a litte leanient(sp?). However, it is preventing children and teens under age from purchasing those violent vids. Now it's the parents responsibility to make sure that their children aren't playing such videogames.

The ratings that they have now are: T-for teen, M-for Mature 17+, E-for Everyone, eC-for early Childhood, and Ao-for Adults only 18+

Completely agree with Stargaze. Banning the violent games would spoil all the videogames market, and its consequent mass metting all over the world, becoming into a idealist war about what your children can watch or can't watch on TV. It's an endless topic, which will never be finished at any price.
