But i have already '_' ! I.e. I think there is a lot of evidence for certain things but no solid proof, hence why i am agnostic (as i like to keep my perspectives open about things). Do you understand what being agnostic is? I don't think i could explain why i believe in what i believe in any better.
First you tell me i am not allowed to explain at all why i believe in what i believe in, now you tell me that people can only say why they believe what they believe in if its based on the existence of things rather than the disagreement or non-existence of things.
You're contradicting your own instructions and i think you should stop being so unessarily confrontational if you want to avoid arguements- if there's anything i have said that offends you then state it instead of trying to dictate what i can or can't say for no good reason at all.
I don't see the sign Moderator or Admin above your name, so if you have issue with how people behave then report it to a Moderator or the Admin.
honey i wasn't talking to you only and i did not mean to offend you or anyone esle but we have to keep on topic,i already had a similar thread where many members flamed on each other, including me 😊
There are people register to reply to one post and make a big mess.
You can open another thread for "Why" but i don't advise you to do so.

Right.

The idea of this thread is ONLY to post your religion and why your subscribe to it.

[...]

16. Humanism. Does mean only atheists, as the link explains.
17. Agnostic. Not so much a belief system.
18. Atheism. Yes, I know it isn't a belief system or a religion, but t needs to be included.
19. Undecided. There maybe many members that are thinking about religion and whether to follow another path to that of their parents or peers.
20. Do not care. For those who go through life without giving it much thought.

I would recommend that you read, especially, the bold bits of the OP's extract above giving words their ordinary meaning and without reference to what would be expedient and what you would recommend others to do or refrain from doing. You will find that answering 'Why?' is part of the envisioned task for those who opt to participate in this discussion and excluding it would defeat the whole purpose not only of this thread but of the Serious Discussion subforum. Also, addressing someone, with whom you are having a disagreement, as 'honey' is an excellent way to start a flame war, which you claim you wish to avoid.

The lack of evidence is the strongest evidence we have for there being no gods, that as well as that all gods have evolved with the times, from the punitive tribal gods to the all loving gods, and they were often if not always limited to people's imagination. Zeus, the all powerful god of the Greeks pales in comparison to the destruction we can unleash these days.

Then theistic religions run into all kinds of logical difficulties, like the problem of evil, the increasing evidence for determinism, being subject to higher laws of morality even though they are all powerful, and stuff like creationist arguments requiring a higher power to make all this, which would then require an infinity of tiers of higher intelligences.

Science, the natural, explains a lot pretty well, and it doesn't require so much contortion work to try and make it all logical.

I don't mind making a stance in saying I'm atheist.

Also, addressing someone, with whom you are having a disagreement, as 'honey' is an excellent way to start a flame war, which you claim you wish to avoid.
So what am i supporsed to say ? lady ? or rude word ? i choose the best word i have,i am not english man so i don't know that honey is not good word to call woman !!

Moderating is for the moderators. You do not need to pre-warn me or other people how to behave on a topic (especially since as you can see i am not a new member on this forum), unless of course people aren't behaving properly.
To clear this matter up for once and for all;

1. The person who created this thread clearly asks people to talk about & discuss their religious beliefs etc.
2. The other thread you speak of was closed because it became uncivil and not because people discussed their beliefs- there is nothing wrong with discussing or voicing personal beliefs as long as it is done in a polite/civil manner etc.
So what am i supporsed to say ? lady ? or rude word ? i choose the best word i have,i am not english man so i don't know that honey is not good word to call woman !!

For the record, calling someone you don't know personally "sweetie" is generally considered quite patronising (offensive). Its usually a word you only use to address someone who you know is definitely agreeable with being called that (like your wife/lover/partner etc)- the word is the same equivalent as "honey", "darling", "babe" etc.

If you are quoting someone's post then that is enough to let that person know that you are addressing them specifically. If you are making a general comment too but also quoting a post at the same time, then put the general comment above quote and the specific/personally addressed comment under the quote. Failing that, simply address the person using their forum name (in my case Tokis-Phoenix, although T-P or Tokis will also suffice).
Hope this clears this matter up for you :) .

A part of me believes that we have actually evolved to believe in religion. In some ways this makes sense- those who have a strong faith are more likely to survive certain terrible events or adversities (for example being kept prisoner in terrible conditions)- so those whose brains were more susceptable to believing in abstract concepts like that of god, were more likely to survive and pass on these genes.

But none the less though, there is still much that cannot be explained.

For example, the phenomenon of ghosts is a worldwide phenomenon and tens (or even hundreds) of millions of people all over the world have had paranormal experiences. And this is no new phenomenon- people have been reporting paranormal experiences for millenia, even in countries which had no contact with each other (and so it couldn't possibly be a case of concepts being passed on from one people to another). For peoples all over the world to experience these same phenomenon, i think this must be more than just coincidence.

While a lot of so-called paranormal experiences can be explained, an equally great amount cannot be explained. So logically viewing the situation, one must conclude that either;
1. The human race has been suffering from a serious & genetically rampant worldwide case of schizophrenia for thousands of years, regardless of race, culture or origin etc.
2. Or that ghosts do "exist" and that they are possibly evidence of either;
a. Some other dimension that interacts with our own
b. They are possibly evidence of an afterlife or some post-death existence, or
c. That they are the result of phenomenons that our current underdestanding of physics cannot yet explain. Or
d. Something else entirely.

I don't think the possible existence of ghosts can be dismissed easily since it is such a widespread, widely experienced and ancient phenomenon. I have very open views when it comes to paranormal stuff, and it interests me greatly as i do think that it this area that offers us the best chance of proof concerning stuff like afterlifes or gods or otherworldly forces at work etc. I do think that as time goes by, more stuff like this will be scientifically explained, and when it is i look forward greatly to the results of such studies :) .

Firstly, not all native speakers are English. Secondly, not all members are native speakers, not unlike yourself. Thirdly, you have the internet at your disposal and it is extremely easy to check the meaning and usage of words. Fourthly, it is not in the least logical to use a word, the use of which you have not fully mastered, so boldly. Fifthly, you have never had such an issue in the past, ie you have never had any difficulty addressing the female members of the forums, certainly not from what I have seen.

Just to clear up a few points.
1. The person who created this thread clearly asks people to talk about & discuss their religious beliefs etc.
this thread is actually two threads merged into one by DB. The OP was by Nichiren in a thread just to discuss religion and a poll was not attached. Nichiren had a habit of creating threads with a hidden purpose of pushing his beliefs. Incidently he hasn't been back since I questioned him directly about his faith and its snake oil merchant who runs it.
I created the poll for a seperate thread. I did include this part:
The idea of this thread is ONLY to post your religion and why your subscribe to it. It is not a thread for saying why yours should be the correct one, or for discussing scripture and how true it is. It is not for flaming or insulting others beliefs. It is not for proselytizing, preaching or trying to convert anyone. Anyone doing so will have their post deleted and infraction points given. If they continue further action will be taken.
Why is part of the thread. Just putting up Agnostic, Muslim, Pastafarian, etc., doesn't really give an insight for why. What I wanted to avoid was the debates that go deeper into detail of various religions and the right/wrong parts of them. If you want to do that then by all means create a thread for that purpose.

P.s: Nice to see you back Tokis

^ So basically we can discuss the "whys" of our beliefs as long as they don't go off into a tangent that deserves a thread in its own right? Thankyou for clarifying the thread & thread starters history too ^_^ .

P.s: Its good to be back & nice to see you too Mycernius (& Derfel :) !) ^_^ .

A part of me believes that we have actually evolved to believe in religion. I agree to some extent. Those who had strong faith in some magical daddies in earlier ages apparently had an advantage over those who didn't because, first of all, worrying and doubting are almost useless and possibly harmful (particularly in cases of extreme emotional pressure) without a basis of theoretical and empirical knowledge of your environment (which comes about through elementary processes like abstraction, symbolic representation, perception, etc), which get scarcer the further back we go in time. It's quite obvious that doubt becomes more pertinent the more knowledge one possesses. And even with such a basic knowledge, doubt and careful investigation (without which the former would be quasi-meaningless in any case) require much more energy and time than simply accepting the teachings of an old book or an oral tradition without questioning. Secondly, keeping and respecting the cohesion of the group, while possibly a mere luxury at best in our time, was a primordial means of survival for our early ancestors, and questioning the common beliefs of your fellow tribe men would be perceived as a threat, as it may put that cohesion in jeopardy.
But I don't think that religious faith has any importance in the modern age. The advantage of skepticism is that, on the long run, it results in much more sophisticated mechanisms of self control and environment control: science and technology are none but the result of centuries of investigation by skeptics who had to suffer the persecution of believers in many instances.
And as about the example of the prisoner you gave, I don't see why religious faith would be necessarily the only means by which a person under extreme conditions would feel better. Any form of faith would do the trick (faith in your innocence, faith that someone would come to save you, etc.), not to mention other psychical methods like thinking about the best moments in your life, your loved ones…

believing in abstract concepts like that of god

I suppose you mean metaphysical concepts. I believe mathematics is the most awesome thing in the world! That doesn't make me religious, now does it? :p

Such "experiences" were most probably present even when humanity comprised mere hundreds or thousands of individuals scattered in East-Africa. They didn't have to be passed from one country to another, I think.
But my question is: why do these phenomena always seem to occur when:
- The light is dim or it's too dark to see anything?
- You've just woken up and aren't fully sure if you're still dreaming or not?
- Somebody (not you) supposedly experienced that alone and you're supposed to take him on faith?
- etc.

In short, why does it always seem to happen when your capacities of perception, reasoning, and judgment are at their nadir? And why does the "proof" always seem to consist of either shadowy photos, or items which turn out to be mere hoaxes?

While a lot of so-called paranormal experiences can be explained, an equally great amount cannot be explained.

Careful!! "Cannot" is a dangerous word to use for a freethinker... :p

So logically viewing the situation, one must conclude that either;
1. The human race has been suffering from a serious & genetically rampant worldwide case of schizophrenia for thousands of years, regardless of race, culture or origin etc.

Nah, schizophrenia is a very extreme case, you don't need to go that far.

I think the nomenclature "paranormal" means that by definition these phenomena are supposed to be beyond "normal" explanations, and possibly beyond physical laws. You'd probably need a totally new kind of science to account for it, under the presumption of course that such a thing exists in the first place.

Of course religious faith has importance for many in the modern age. War is rife across the world, millions live in absolute poverty, millions are dying, millions are suffering the loss of their livelihoods or facing the prospect of living in dire situations for the rest of their lives, millions are suffering from oppression & disease & violence etc etc etc.

For a lot of people, they know they have no logical hope in life. They have no money, no family, no-one to save them. You can only look back on happier times if you've had them. But even then, if you suffer from depression then its very difficult to try and look back on happier times etc.

The world is a very unfair & harsh place to live. Those who have cushty lives are the fortunate ones. Often people don't have much but faith in their lives to survive and keep on striving for better even when they know the odds are well against them.

And then there is morality. Sure, religion is guilty of plenty of actions that are immoral- but there are no religions that aim to be this way. At the centre of religions, whatever their differences, is a path to spiritual inner peace by living your life in a good way etc. Many people do good deeds (for example donating to charity) because of the religion they believe in, and i think most religious people are good people.

So why i am not religious/don't believe in any religions in particular, i definitely think that religion has its place in the "modern age", if not even more so than ever. Athieism doesn't teach you morality, it doesn't give you hope, and it doesn't profess to answer any questions- when your life is very difficult or terrible, Athieism doesn't help you. All it does is let you know that your life really is aweful, that no-one is going to save or help you, and at the end of your sufferings you will just die and turn into compost.
Undestandably, there are lot of people who would like to believe in more in life (and a lot of people really do believe there is more to life than just life as we know it, and not just because they want to believe this).

Secondly, while a lot of people profess to be Athiest, i think deep down most athiests aren't totally atheist. Case & point: i doubt there are going to be many professed atheists left on a commercial airliner plane falling 30,000ft out of the air.
People look to religion (or god, whatever) in times of need, doubt or answers etc. While we may have evolved to believe in religion, for a lot of people having a Faith can help them greatly and so i do not look down upon religion or believe that it has no place in modern society etc.

But my question is: why do these phenomena always seem to occur when:
- The light is dim or it's too dark to see anything?
- You've just woken up and aren't fully sure if you're still dreaming or not?

You'd probably need a totally new kind of science to account for it, under the presumption of course that such a thing exists in the first place.

What about paranormal phenomenon that multiple people experience in good conditions (plenty of light, both people not tired, no shadow tricks etc)?

I have experienced paranormal phenomenon that i just cannot explain in a rational/logical/scientific manner and i have known many other people whom i trust who have also experienced strange phenomenon.
Concerning the gathering of evidence, i think the main problem lies in that some hauntings seem to be like an old broken video recorder playing over a certain event at a certain time- this may only happen once a year or once every few years or even longer etc. To be in the exact place at exactly the right time to witness a happening that might only last seconds, is quite a difficult task to perform. Other forms of hauntings seem to have some form of consciousness, and are not events that happen at particular set intevals, but rather the spirit/ghost seems to have power over what is happening at any time in the present.

Whatever the case though, people almost always only experience paranormal experiences when they are least expecting it (i.e. when they are not looking for it or thinking about it etc). But i do think that if there was a properly funded & trustworthy study done be a respectable source, we will eventually find more solid proof for paranormal happenings.

And its only sensible to keep our perspectives open about things like this. There are many things we have only discovered recently, that before they were discovered no-one but a very few would have believed their existence (for example brain cell memory tissue found in the heart). As much as we are a very advanced species, we are only just beginning to accurately understand the world around us- even concerning something as basic as the weather system, there is much we still don't understand about it.
So the fact that we are only just beginning to really understand something as basic & visible as our weather system, i think we are still a long way off from discovering & understanding paranormal phenomenons. We don't even understand that much about the way our own brains work lol!

I believe in Islam. I was born Muslim, but I've read about other religions. Some are very interesting and appealing, like Zoroastrianism and Buddhism. To the extent, that I think that their founders might have been the unmentioned prophets. Allah has 120000 Prophets. 25 are mentioned in the Quran. That leaves us with 119975 Prophets. I follow Islam because I have seen the spiritual elements of it. The sight of the Kaabah is breathtaking. The Holy Water, Zamzam, is refreshing. It's like some spiritual energy exists, and whenever I lay my eyes on Islamic Calligraphy or see a dome or a crescent my body stores this spiritual energy. Whenever I walk past a Mosque, my heart relaxes. Therefore, I follow Islam because it makes me feel this way.

I partly follow Stoicism, a classical Greco-Roman philosophy known for its pragmatism and which was first elaborated upon by Zeno of Citium in about 300bce in Athens. Stoicism later proved to be very popular with the Romans but, with the advent of Christianity, it went into decline, as did all of the schools of pagan philosophy. Stoicism reappeared, in a somewhat new guise, during the European Renaissance as a Christianized philosophy founded by Justus Lipsius (a Flemish humanist philosopher). By the late 20th century, Stoicism had found a number of new devotees, probably owing to the internet and the widespread availability of good translations of the surviving Stoic thinkers like Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius (whose diary, the so-called Meditations, introduced me so to speak), and Seneca.

I also follow some of the Biblical doctrines and tales, although not in a religious sense. To me, the Bible is the work of many hands and its doctrines of a single God isn't as unique as the orthodox believers believe. This is an opinion that's just, well, an opinion. I don't believe in apostles and prophets; God makes himself available to everyone who's an earnest seeker of the truth. Neither do I hold any particular book in veneration, lest I be guilty of bibliolatry.

Generally, I consider myself to be a Godfearing man, and consider God to be a leader worthy to be followed. I've got an interest in the old pagan mythologies, but it's an mainly an interest. So, none of this pagan, neopagan, wiccan hooey for me even though I'm familiar with some of it (Asatru mainly).

I am quite sick of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and blah, blah, blah. I think there is a higher path, and it concerns no suffering, fleshy men, or anything ridiculous like that! In fact, my Lord is so great that even death whimpers in his presence. That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die. He is truly great. Tremble, mortals.

Cthulhu isn't even very powerful as the ancient creatures from the Lovecraftian mythos go. Why settle for a tyro? You might as well worship the Elder Things, the Flying Polyps, or, especially, the Great Race, over squid-head.

Why would I choose the Great Race? They're essentially swapping bodies with newer races every so often. The only other creature in the Cthulhu Mythos I could worship is Yog-Shothoth, for Yog-Shothoth is the Lurker at the Threshold, the Path, the Gate, and the Key.

The Great Race has no fear of death due to its master of mental time travel and, as far as Lovecraftian beings go, are fairly benign. That's far more impressive to me than merely being some alien mad thing like Cthulhu or Azathoth.

The Great Race can die, and they are afraid of it, that is why seek to find away around it. Cthulhu is timeless, Cthulhu cannot die.

Cthulhu cannot die.

Lovecraft never elaborated on this, to my knowledge. In the story, various cults worship Cthulhu as some kind of deity, but nothing about Cthulhu's divinity was ever elaborated on by Lovecraft (that I know of).
