The first physical CD I have bought in many many years. A two-disc compilation Hamako Watanabe: Golden Best, forty-four tracks covering the period 1933-1958.
The voice of an angel on all tracks, but the vocals really shine on the post-war tracks due to improved recording equipment. But I prefer the pre-war tracks with the orchestration unique to that period (and enhanced by the poor technology, oddly enough).
Snippets of 45 seconds of each song can be heard on the linked Amazon page. My favorites are 忘れちゃいやヨ and いとしあの星.
If nothing else, check out the fabulous CD cover photo. They don't take 'em like that anymore.
