Retired and home everyday.
I have spent all summer feeding my backyard zoo. I spend about $40US a week on assorted food. I have about 10 grey squirrels , 1 red squirrel , 1 chipmonk , 1 woodchuck , 4 morning doves , a male and female cardinal pair , and about 25 pigeons. They come every morning and evening to eat. Hopefully they will be fat and healthy to get through the long cold Maine winter that will arrive in a few more months. I enjoy watching them all more than TV.

I am just whiling away my only Saturday of freedom from work and school. Rediscovering JREF and all it has to offer. I have to admit that I still have very fond memories of this place. I'm glad that it hasn't seemed to change much.

The North Pole !
Getting ready to crank up the snow blower and dig out from our first snow storm of the season. With the 30 mile per hour winds , there was lots of drifting. Some spots have 3 or 4 inches and some spots are 3 feet deep or more. With a driveway 95 feet long and 12 feet wide , it usually takes about 2 hours to clean up everything.

Watching the snow come down again.
Noon time temperature here in Maine is 3 degrees F or minus 16 C. It has been snowing all day today and the storm is going to last till tomorrow night. Here on the coast , we are supposed to get between 8 to 18 inches of snow before it is done. We had over two feet of snow in December and a horrible ice storm ; seems like this is going to be an old fashioned winter here in Maine. I'm happy I am retired now , so I don't have to drive to work and back in this. I have a driveway 95 feet long and 12 feet wide that I have to clean after each storm. Also a front and back door has to be cleared with a long walkway to the front door to be cleared. Because too much snow on the roof can cause problems , we have to also clean the roof off after each storm. I have a 15 foot long rake I use to reach up and pull the snow down with. Most people here in Maine have a snow blower. It's kind of like a big lawn mower. Mine has a 15 horse power engine and cuts a 32 inch path through the snow. It will throw the snow about 25 to 30 feet in the air when you use it. Even with the snow blower , it takes about 2 hours of hard work to clean all the snow away. Then when the next storm comes , you start all over. It is good exercise. Here in Maine , we get snow right up to the month of April so I will have many more days like today.

Sure wish I were there ! In Portland this morning , it was 14 below zero F and minus 25C. We are all happy though that it's not snowing and the sun is out, LOL.

My goal for today will probably sound strange to most dog owners!
I'm determined to teach my dog to fetch! A ball ..... a stick .... anything!
He is 5 years old ..... obedient and very intelligent. He is well trained and correctly responds to dozens of commands and a hat-full of tricks! He just has no interest in fetching objects.... never has.
Every other dog I've had has been keen to fanatical about chasing a ball or stick and returning it to me!! ...but my current best friend prefers just sniffing around and chasing the many lizards and rabbits we come across on our walks!
My plan today is to go to a park that has none of these distractions and persevere with getting him to fetch. It will make things a lot easier for his exercise as he gets on in years, particularly as we will be bringing him out to Nihon next year and we won't have the freedom of space we enjoy here downunder.

I'm now listening to music. I have a lot of new things to go through and listen to. It's a bit overwhelming. I'm also trying to find a place to interact with others, so I reminded myself to come back to this forum. I was hoping something more instantaneous though.

In the deep dark dungeon.
I'm spending my summer rebuilding my cellar. We needed a new 275 Gallon oil tank as the old one was 65 years old and rusty. We rented a 17 yard dumpster and filled it with just over 4000 pounds of my accumulated junk. There was a cheap wallboard room I had to tear out and behind it was a cement wall covered with mold and mildew and peeling layers of lead based paint. I have to wear a dust suit and dust mask to work on it. I've filled 10 5 gallon pails with scrapings and still have a 15 foot section to go. It has to be scraped with a paint scraper first and then wire brushed and then vacuumed to get it safe. Since paint won't stick to the cement (too much moisture coming through the wall) , I'm using a dark window screen to cover the walls and make them look half decent. When I get the walls all done , I need to rip out all the old wiring and install new lights and plugs. I have another dumpster load ready to go by the end of this month. I've spent about $5000 US on the project so far , but it's nice to have everything new and clean again. Hoping to be done with everything by September , All the work is killing my time on the internet , LOL.
