Video Card what one?

OK here is the 411 on my Box.

Running a P3 933
got 128MB SDRAM
The video Card that I have right now is a Radion 7000

My system is to old to take full advantage of a state of the art card.
What would be a good card that is around $150. This would give me a good midrange card. I am also going to max out my Mobo with 512MB SDRAM one day so that will help out some to.

Really my Box is old but it still can play some newer games.
I say that It can play Doom3 some what with a midrange video card.
But it will not be that good looking

i have a Radeon 9600 SE, 128 meg AGP. its pretty good and hasn't given me any problems yet. the game im mostly playing now is battlefield 1942. did you know that the japanese soldiers actually speak japanese in the game? i thought that was a pretty cool touch.

I'd stick with a Radeon, but buying a Radeon 9600 would be wasting money because, just like you said, your system is too old too take full advantage of a state-of-the-art video card. You might be able to get a Radeon 9600 pro, but the best buy would be a Radeon 9200. That should be good enough, but your specs are just too old to use anything new. Most new video card should be run with at least a 2 Ghz or above CPU or you'd just be wasting your money. Oh, and by the way, it would help to know what motherboard you have because some motherboards have 4X AGP settings or 8X and it would be a waste to buy a 8X card only to be used on a 4X board and vice versa.

The best you could get for $150 is a Radeon 9600 XT
You could carry this card over when you get a new PC sometime.
If you only occassionally play some older games, a normal 9600 (non-XT, non-Pro) might also suffice, it should be about $100.
Don't get a 9600 SE/LE - it's not much cheaper than a normal 9600, but much slower since it has only 64bit instead of the full 128bit.

Radeon 9600 XT is what I might go for. That is what was said on some other boards.

Presuming that I'm talking about the same thing, I have a Voodoo 5 with 64 mB of onboard RAM. Those 64 megs seemed pretty impressive when I put together (not literally) the components for my computer in the fall of 2000.

Now it seems a bit passﾃｩ...

yeah, i was running a voodoo 3000 a couple of years ago until i got my dads old TNT2... it sounds completely weird but the voodoo card ran return to castle wolfenstien really really well! i was really impressed. But i had to change because its just too hard to find good drivers for the voodoo's now.

The trouble with computers are that you get bottlenecks everywhere unless you are running all of the latest stuff. But you should be able to get a good 4x graphics card pretty cheap that will run the new games...you'll probably be able to run doom3 on your machine.. but it wont be the fastest...

I know one person that used a TNT2 card for almost 4 years and if worked good for her.

TNT2's are great cards for being compatible with older stuff. I'm putting together a box just to play older games that I can't now, it'll probably be a PII 266mhz, 256mb ram, and either a Voodoo or a TNT2.

The Radeon 9600XT is a great card, I have it too, and it runs any game fine at high resolutions (1024x768+), even Half Life 2 beta, and Doom 3.

If you're planning on running the latest games, at resolutions of 1280x1024+ though, the 9800XT would be better.

great luck with ATI. I see they are coming out with a new
graphics board with a HDTV tuner built in or a seperate board to conect the tuner to your ATI board you already have.Road Runner has TV signals on the same wire as the PC hook-up so you can watch TV while you use your PC.

humph, i was just looking at ati's site and they came out with a new card called the X800. its performance it twice that of the 9800 pro. damn!! you'll never have any graphic lag and you can probably play multiple games at the same time.

as for the tv in your computer i thought that was pretty old. you can do that with the all-in-wonder 9600 xt's. my friends has that and he watches tv while surfing the net. that card is a little too expensive for me.

It was great and i could play ever game that came out around that time without any problems. I could even play UT2003 with it, but i did need everything turned either down or off.. but i thought that was quite impressive for a 16mb (or 32mb, i cant remember now) card. I think it would still run some of the games now, except for maybe the super high graphics games that use rendering pipelines that the TNT2 doesn't have.

It was a really good solid card though.

I have the same computer, but I upgraded it and I have 256 RAM. If you search a little, yo could find a Radeon 9600/9600Pro for that prize.

Hmm, I need a new graphics card as well, the performance of the GeForce FX 5200 that came with my new computer is... disappointing, to say the least.

There's no way I'm paying 200 quid for a graphics card, though.
I'd still like to try Doom 3... how come no one releases demo versions of games any more these days?

i'd buy a ASUS A9600SE/TD Radeon 9600SE 128Mb DDR, TV-out, DVI (80竄ｬ here)
and 256 mb ram. approx 50竄ｬ
so 130竄ｬ. and you should be able to play some older games on a good detail. (UT2003 -2004)
but to play doom, you'll need a better cpu.

ow yea, this videocard is on AGP, a brown slot on your motherboard. it's possible that the videocard on now is PCI (white slot), and you don't have AGP. be sure to check before you buy!

The Radeon 9800 Pro isn't bad! A bit of overclocking and you have a 9800XT. It doesn't even come close to the X800's or the geforce6800's but it should run Half-life 2 and Doom 3.

i can run doom3 with my 9600XT on medium 800*600
and soon on maximum detail with my new x800 pro
and what do you mean with 128 mb? your videoram or comuter ram?
couse whan it's vieoram, that's more then enough. i heard it's even so that the new cards (x800 etc) with 256mb don't use 256mb ram.
