That's what I heard to. Don't know how true it is but I actually got into an argument with someone about this once at my job. She said that she wipes the other way and I told her she can get infection that way and she fought me for a good ten minutes on the subject. She was my boss at the time. How mature. 😄

I justy came back from Japan, I took pictures of their toilets...

Apparently my professor has been to Japan two times and did not dare to try the buttons, she was afraid something might happen to her in the toilet....hahaha

1. I always go for the first urinal I come to, so I guess that is 1, does not matter who else is there. I can think of a million reasons. For starters, its further from the window. I teach at schools and you can often see in the window from outside. Next, there is often a partition between urinal one and the door or sink. If you are at urinal one, you have more privacy. The further you get away from the partition the more you are exposed. Last, if people are following you it may seem polite to go to urinal 5. But, will you stop at 5? People behind you don't know. They may bump into you if you stop at 4. Or they may think there are more urinals because they cannot see through you. If you stop at urinal 1, no confusion. They go to the next available. As much as stopping at urinal 1 seems selfish, its not. Its the real kindness because there is no confusion.

2. Down to up, or front to back. Pushing is an awkward motion more prone to mess. Pulling is more controllable.

3. Probably a port-a-potty at a campsite.

4. My toilet looks like the pic in Minty's post. Heated seat and controls on the right.

You should have asked how everyone likes their toilet paper hung, with paper hanging in the front or the back. Lets call it question 5.

5. I HATE having it at the back! It often translates to little room between it and the wall to grab it.

Aside, pit toilets are better for your butthole. Sitting toilets give you hemorrhoids.

But what I don't like about pit toilets (at least in Japan) is that you are supposed to squat facing the wall and not the door, and I find that very uncomfortable. Anybody could be peeking at you over or under the door and you would not know.

Edit: Change pit toilet to squat toilet. Two different things.

Gyaaaaa... This must be the worst thread I ever started and you guys decided to bring it up again...

A friend of mine let her husband sit on the toilet when he has to pee.... she doesn't want him to go mad while standing and peeing.

We have two of these high-tech toilets at home, and after so many years they still scare me.

Another bathroom-related issue that puzzles me: toilegami. Seems to play a not insignificant role in Japanese toilet manners.

No kidding? My view is that while foreigners come here and degrade the Japanese for the squat toilets, the flip side is that her in Japna they have quickly upgraded to toilets that make Japanese look upon the standard toilet in American homes with disdain (I know I do!). I think of this as the Toilet Wars, and I wonder what will be the next great innovation. Perhaps a toilet that actually physically wipes for you? Because spraying water and having an air dryer is seriously not always enough!

There have been a few times in my life when I had trouble finding the end of the paper, sure. But not so much that I could be bothered to neatly fold the end of the roll after I was done, each and every time. In fact, it annoys me knowing that someone actually took the time to do that, making the next person feel obligated. As if there is not enough stupid unnecessary obligation in this country already. I would rather search for the end once a year if the rate was even that.

My sides are currently in orbit. I never thought I'd see you, of all people, post a thread like this. You sure used to write a lot differently! :P

Does it actually eliminate the need to wipe in most cases though? That sounds utterly life-changing.
