The Weird Dreams Thread

I am very much into science, that's true (as my bio on my profile page says) and am also into a number of other fields too.

I would agree with your underlying nuance that many folks--and some of them are scientists--tend to write off such matters across the board, and that really appears to be in rather direct contradiction to a fair amount of human experience and observation. You find very, very few articles/papers on paranormal type subjects. NewScientist magazine is the best for getting reports from that area.

Yes, it does and can happen--dreaming events that match events in the real world to whatever degree. Of course there will also be those who push an event in real life into their dreams, but I have found those to usually be dectable to a degree.

It's so interesting to think and ponder over just what machanics may be behind dreams that have a high degree (and sometimes even much less, but nevertheless so) of future fulfillment. Thanks for sharing. MM

I am standing at the edge of the ocean. It's a moody night with the erie white of giant waves pounding on the shore and angry clouds trying to obliterate the light of the moon. I can see a giant black metal sphere out in the ocean. There are some lights visible. I want to get there. I have to. I can see two long black poles, they stretch over the water that seems to reach up toward this bridge like angry hands wanting to pull me down. I step on to the bottom pole and it feels slippery and bends, I hold on to the top pole and guide myself to the sphere. It's scary and I can feel the cold hands of the water touching my feet. I continue and finally am able to get inside the sphere. It is gigantic. There are rings that run around the outside like a racetrack. There are many levels of these rings and when I walk to the edge I can see that the center of the sphere is completely open and I can see down to the ocean and up to the sky. People are walking on the floors in the same direction, the same speed, repeating the circle over and over again. I am wet and cold and realize that I am in my pajamas and barefoot. I want dry, warm clothes. I ask and ask and no one will help me.

Then I wake up. I have had this dream for at least 10 years, not every night, but so often that when it starts I tell myself that I shouldn't wake up and I should see if I ever get my warm, dry clothes.

Sorry to be so tardy in responding, but I've been busy searching my leaky memory bank to recall what spurred that dream I had.

Ever since I was in Japan wa-a-a-a-a-a-ay back in the late 70's, I've been enamored with the country, the culture and the people. Of course, everyone here knows about my obsession with Pink Lady, the legendary J-Pop singing duo from that era, and yes, I find Japanese women incredibly beautiful, exotic and cultured. Who wouldn't? Hardly a day passes when I don't find myself thinking about what it would be like to have a Japanese lady for a loving and devoted wife. Sounds kinda pathetic at first blush, but, hey, that's what I think about. Sometimes too much I'll admit.

To Sarapva: You mentioned a theory that this dream could be interpreted as my life partner seeking to find me instead of the other way around. Hmm, interesting, perhaps, but to be perfectly honest, I don't know of any woman, regardless of their nationality being interested in a hopeless dork like me. As for the comic book shop, that's the first place I visit every time I go to New York City, and yeah, it carries manga as well as comic books, though I don't know if that has any significance. As for my feelings in the dream, surprise was the chief emotion as I never believed a Japanese lady would come halfway across the world just to meet me. It all made for quite an experience that is linked to my deep appreciation for Japan and its people, most notably, it's wonderful women.

To Mars Man: What was on my mind at the time that could've spurred the dream? Usually I think about what to post on my Pink Lady website which often occupies my thoughts when I'm not at work. Still, if that had been the case, the lady in my dream would've been either Mie or Kei (by the by, I've always been partial to Kei, she's on the right in the avatar pic), but it wasn't them. Oh, did I tell anayone about the dream, heck no! I would've been too embarrassed if I had. Well, that's pretty much it, folks! Analyze away!

Man o man!! That's the perfect intro to any (science) fiction book!! I have no clue what it means, but it seems like you've got a pretty image of the dream itself. Maybe you could write it in a (even) more detailed story version and have some "experts" (self-proclaimed or not) analyze it.

About the whole future predicting dreams that MM and Sara are talking about, I like MM's thought that:
In scientific, laced with philosophical theories, time could be thought of as a singular present, wherein our brains have an illusion of a flow.
How often have I not heard people speak of having dreams about the future.. After the fact that had occured in the dream. It could be very plausible that the brain makes up an image of the dream at the moment that something occurs. I feel pretty confident this might be the case because often do not recall when they had the predicting dream. It is often a sense of "ow, I feel I have dreamt this!!".

The fact that the comic book is the first thing you go to when visiting New York sounds like it's a routine which does not require a lot of decision-making and planning. Maybe the dream is just a visualization of some desire to meet a Japanese woman (who wants to be your friend or even more), while you are not actively searching for one. This "analysis" is just fitting what you mentioned in the rest of your post to the dream you had.. But why not discuss it with friends? Ok, we love to hear your stories and help you out, but maybe it is more fruitful to discuss it with people who know about your daily life, past and present?

My dreams get pretty wacky when I'm camping and sleeping out in the woods. Probably because of all the wild noises I hear above my tent.

I forgot most of the details, but in this dream I was a middle school student and somehow set a fire in one of the school buildings. I watch everyone running, trying to escape while feeling this strange happiness, and I start to laugh like a mad person.
That was when my husband shook my shoulder and told me that I was scaring the hell out of him.

I've heard that responding or talking to a person who is sleep-talking could cause a slight disorientation to the person and not recommended. I wonder how true that is?

I am a sleep talker and walker! Sometimes when I am woken up unexpectedly, I almost have a panic attack. I feel like someone is after me and trying to kill me. Why I get that feeling just from waking up while talking or walking is beyond me. I went to sleep center and had a sleep studies done...wow...they said my brain doesn't like to turn off and that I have restless leg syndrome (suprise I walk in my sleep), and was prescibed all different type of sleeping meds and given lessons on how to sleep...really! I was told that people who are vivid dreamers tend to be the talkers and walkers which I guess is true for me. All of my dreams are so vivid, color, sound, emotion, everything is amplified. I have even woke up crying and sobbing.

I hate sleeping outside because of the noises. The last time I slept in a tent I heard noises like some one was licking their lips outside of my tent. Turns out it was a racoon eating the potato salad I dumped in the fire pit.

That is funny!! :giggle: Imaginations can run wild, especially when camping! I have dreams sometimes that are really nightmares, and I'm so relieved when I wake up and realize it's not real. Sometimes these are vivid, like someone trying to kill me or some very complicated set-up that rivals a mob-type movie!

What an interesting dream (by the ocean), Goldiegirl! It sounds like reincarnation, or the theory that people are going around in a circle trying to get to the middle (nirvana). You went straight to the middle in the dream - I wonder if that had something to do with not having warm clothes? Lots of possibilities here! It would be interesting to know if you have the dream again and anything different happens.

Flashjeff - I'm sure you're being way too modest and self-effacing (sp?) in describing yourself as someone a "cultured" woman wouldn't want. I wonder if, subconsciously, it's you who doesn't want a cultured woman. Consciously you might, but I wonder if your dream went further, you might have had other feelings, like, "Oh, no, how do I get out of this?" I hope this doesn't sound critical - I'm not criticizing at all. I think this happens a lot, where we want a certain thing, but if we get right down to it, we don't really want it. (If that makes sense!)

Mars Man - I think science is just as important as the "paranormal", and sometimes comes face to face with something unexplainable. I don't remember where I read this, but there was something about scientists experimenting with microscopic cells or electrons and discovering that their own expectations actually influenced the behavior of the electrons. I think science uncovers "new" paranormal things all the time!

Sleep-walking.. Interesting. I've never done it, but a acquaitance of mine jumped from the third floor while sleep-walking!! Because he was still asleep - and thus all his muscles were pretty much relaxed - the damage was limited to a few bruises, thank God!! But I thought it was a pretty scary story.

When I have nightmare I often talk up load and sometimes even wake up screaming. At one time, I was moaning and groaning and that apparently had scared my girlfriend. She tried to wake me up and touched my shoulder, at which point I woke up really fast and in a reflex I now regret I punched her right in the face. 😌

We can laugh about it now, no permanent damage was done.. But it was a weird experience nonetheless!!

I just walk around and usually end up in the kitchen. Suprise! Like leonmarino when being made to wake up when I am talking/walking while sleeping I tend to react by hitting. I think for me it's because I am startled and feel like I am being attacked. I agree too that it's like a reflex action. I've never done any real damage to anyone. I think I have scared most of my family and friends who have witnessed my little episodes. I've been told that my eyes are open. Yikes, that must be creepy!

Sarapva, I like the idea or reincarnation. I never thought of my dream that way. I have such a strong desire to get to that sphere and then to want warm clothes...it's like I am so close but just can't get to what I want. It is so frustrating. I guess I looked at the negative side of it and maybe there is some positive.

That's an interesting theory you posed. Now that I've thought about, I tend to think that I don't want a cultured woman, rather that I'm afraid that I'm not worthy of such a lady. I'm not a cultured guy, twenty years in the Navy took care of that, and I honestly don't think I could measure up to the woman in that dream I had. I guess I'm too much of a wimp to think big.

Flashjeff - I think you probably have a lot of other qualities that are better than being merely "cultured". Some women like men who are more "down to earth". Try not to think of it as not "measuring up" to a cultured woman - I wonder if the lady in your dream could measure up in terms of having a moral or honest character. The soul of a person is much more important than any outside qualities! It would be interesting to know if you had any other dreams like this or variations on this dream, if you'd like to post them.

Goldiegirl - I had some other thoughts about your dream, similar to reincarnation, that it's like a birth or death (which are very similar things according to Buddhism and the belief in reincarnation). You're on the outside, wanting to get in, and when you get in you're cold and need warm clothes (like when we're born we need to have clothes put on). The sphere is very symbolic, with people going around, toiling, like we do in life. The middle is also interesting, like the eye of a hurricane (where it's calm and sunny with the winds whipping around it in a circle). Very much like a place of limbo, not in the circle, but not out of it either, which is what birth and death must be, neither here nor there until we're actually born or actually die. It would be interesting to hear if you have any other variations on the dream!

ive had a few dreams that have come true example i had a dream i crashed a freinds car into another car which was red and the next day it happened but my freind was driving id told him before hand so i thought it was a one off but weeks later i had a dream i chipped my tooth surprise surprise it happened to a freind when he was drunk at first people didnt believe until i started telling them beforehand what was going to happen.has anyone else had similiar experiences or can anyone explain this im a bit freaked out to be honest.

kiedistidus - I think this is something that no one can really explain. My grandmother also dreamed about things that happened later. I think the subconscious mind is fascinating and knows a lot more than our conscious minds do! The subconscious is also very powerful and therefore scary, but it's part of us and I think it's best if we try to incorporate it into our lives instead of trying to ignore it.

yeah i know when your asleep various parts of your brain can start to operate like the front part which holds your potential for telepathy.

The Train Dream

I'm going to post a dream I had a few years ago, having gotten the courage from Goldiegirl's example and positive acceptance of my interpretations! For background: I lived for a few years in Alaska, then finally came back to Virginia where I grew up. Here's the dream:

I get on a train going from Virginia to Alaska. It moves quickly, but more than halfway there the track runs out or is broken and the train derails. The next thing I know, I'm standing at the train station in Alaska with a couple of other people who are looking around, dazed, like me. Some of the other passengers are looking at us, and it becomes clear that we were in the only car of the train that flipped over.

For some reason, the other passengers decide to try this trip again, going back to the station in Virginia (and getting there almost instantaneously, not by train, like only happens in dreams). I and the other couple of people who were in the car that flipped over are carried along by this, but when we get to the station in Virginia I feel so strongly against trying that trip again that I decide not to. I'm the only one who doesn't get back on the train and, while the others are going down to the platform (like in a subway station), I start to go up a long flight of stairs. It's quiet after the others are gone, and there are no other people there. I go up this flight of stairs and get to a double door. I go through the door into bright daylight and onto a city street. There are people around, cars, etc. I realize that the doors I just came through are not acknowledged by the people on the street - it's like an abandoned theater. The doors weren't locked and anyone could go through them if they wanted, but no one seemed to even think about that in the hustle and bustle of this city life. It feels like I've come from a dark, quiet place, full of adventure, out to this bright, noisy place that's more about the surface of things. I have the thought that I'd like just one person to be able to understand what I've gone through.

Interpretations? Ideas?

To be honest, I don't think I've had any other dreams quite like that one before, nor have I had any since. But then, I wonder if I could match up to any woman, never mind a cultured one. But hey, that's my hangup. Still, that was one of those most memorable dreams I've ever had, especially since remembering my dreams are often a hit or miss thing. It'd be nice if that one came true, but I'm grounded enough to know that's foolish thinking. But, it was a nice fantasy.

just thought id share my latest dream.lastnight i dreamt i had a full beard from ear to chin just thought it was a bit weird as although im 20 im incapable of even growing a respectable moustache lol.

Well I am certainly not a dream expert...But maybe you are protecting yourself from repeating destructive behavior. Perhaps there are parts of your life in Alaska that you shouldn't repeat....???

Yes, the whole experience is something that's not necessary to repeat - once you've learned something, you don't need to relearn it! I think that for me, Alaska was like the subconscious or "dark" side of life, exciting but not life-giving, maybe like a drug addiction. It feels like deciding to come back to Virginia was deciding to live instead of die. I really don't think I would have lived much longer if I'd stayed in Alaska (where there are all kinds of ways to be killed - frozen to death, having a car accident in the snow, being mauled by a bear, etc.). Life is more "on the edge" there, it seems.

Flashjeff - Your dream must have meant something, being so vivid and unlike other dreams you've had. Remember that women are just humans, too, full of faults and shortcomings!

kiedistidus - Do you have a secret wish to grow a beard, or was that dream just a surprise?

Flashjeff - Your dream must have meant something, being so vivid and unlike other dreams you've had.

Well, upon further review, I suppose the ultimate meaning of the dream I had is my (unobtainable) goal of marrying a Japanese lady, a rather fond desire of mine for a long time. So I guess that particular desire spurred the dream I had. I know it sounds rather silly, especially since the chances of that coming to pass are slim and none, but that is my desire. But it's funny that I haven't had that dream since, perhaps my subconscious caught up with me and realized that dream will never come true. Who can say?

Flashjeff maybe your dream is telling you that you can't just pick out a woman like a magazine. Or that maybe you will need to travel to find her, I know that's obvious, but if you want to marry a Japanese woman, Japan is the best place to be! Like I have said earlier I am by no means a dream analyst. :)

Flashjeff - How did the desire to marry a Japanese woman start? Why Japanese? And why do you think it's unobtainable? I wonder if, in a past life (I believe in reincarnation), you were married to a Japanese lady and are "remembering" that now in this life.

Radioactive bugs?!

I had a extremely strange dream recently:
My school was evacuated because somebody had bred some dangerous radioactive bugs in an underground lab under the school [in reality we don't have a lab caus it's a language school]. I ran away and tried to escape to the "most scary village i've ever seen" [that was the actual expression i dreamd]. On the way i slipped on the street and broke the remote control [?.?] of my tv. And suddenly i realized that i was chased by "Tokyo Hotel" [a German band which i hate].
I dream a load of s*** sometimes...
