Got a question that has been in the back of your mind for a while that you still don't have an answer for?
I thought I'd make this thread for people to ask random questions in the hopes that someone, somewhere will have an answer for it.

I'll get the ball rolling...

American scenario...
I understand currency is produced and introduced into the system through the federal reserve bank.
What I don't understand is how. When is it decided that $10 is put into the system, etc. If someone could enlighten me that would be swell.

to get the thread going, I'll guess at the answer. I think as damaged bills are turned in, they must print replacements.Also, big banks must need a certain amount of each type of bill; maybe if a chain has too many $50 dollar bills, they send them in and order an equal ammount of $10 bills printed up. Now maybe someone can tell us the real answer if my guess is wrong.


I want to know where the missing socks go? It seems one sock a month vanishes after being placed in the wash. It goes in the dirty laundry basket, then to the cellar and into the wash machine and then the dryer. Somewhere in the process a black hole opens up and swallows only 1 of a pair. I have a draw that has gathered hundreds of lonely, mis-matched stockings. I save them for the day when I am old enough to wear non-matching socks and it acceptable do to my old age. SOOOO, any one know where they go?

It's been well-established that underpants/socks gnomes emerge from the walls to steal your goodies. They use them in an overly complicated business plan in which step one is get underwear/socks and step 3 is get money. No one knows what step 2 is.

On question #1...the Federal Reserve has studied how long money will last in society based upon different things, like being folded, put into pockets, accidently washed, etc... I think I remember them saying that a $1 bill is expected to last 4 years? But the larger denominations last longer. The number changes from year to year due to variables like people who use mason jars or matresses instead of banks to hoard money for emergencies and things like that. I watched a documentary on the Discovery Channel a while back. Sorry I don't remember more of the details.

On the second question? Sometimes socks go up over the top of the ring in the washer and land between the tub and the outer wall of the washer. Also, some have been found to slip out the exhaust of the dryer at times...the others go with the gnomes!

I wear Western boots all the time. Nobody ever sees my socks. I only buy one kind, white, cotton/wool sports socks.
I have a drawer full of 'em. Dunno how many ... any two will do!
