take my advice...

Dogs must be carried.

... no wait, that's not quite the same.
You're right, it isn't. :)

That's the distinction that I was trying to make. Of course "You must do X" or "X must be done" implies a command, but "You must do X in order to Y" or "In order to Y, X must be done" doesn't imply that _everyone_ must X (it's only talking to those people who intend to Y), and it _certainly_ doesn't suggest that everyone is required to Y, which is what alexriversan seemed to be suggesting above.

the subconscious mind

"You must be at least eighteen years old to rent this movie."
"You must ___________________________ rent this movie."

it works. thanks for pointing it out, paulTB, jt_.

Hey Alex, did you know Bob from Australia on the old Maktos website? Just curious.

Of course my example is taken from the 'classic' gag

The sign on the elevator said "Dogs must be carried" so I had to go back
home to get mine.

The 'gag' being that the intended meaning is "If you have a dog with you then if you wish to use the elevator you must carry the dog while doing so."

very good.

How could anyone forget "bigozbob?" - your sentence address a group called "anyone".

research has shown, such pieces of communication are dropped, and at the same time they install a holder, which forbids to forget things.

the receipient of the message does not care about bigozbob, or the allowance to forget bigozbob.

it may sound rational, a valid sentence, indeed such sentences are negative communication.

imagine you say such sentences thousands of times.

MY THREAD IS ABOUT GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH.

now, these things also apply to people who use to know bigozbob. you do them a favour if you do not talk that way.

Are you guys talking about E-Prime ?

3A. John is lethargic and unhappy.
3B. John appears lethargic and unhappy in the office.

japanese drops obvious information.

indeed, 3A generalizes john as lethargic and unhappy.

personal records are full of such sentences.

they say nothing to the reader, but let appear the person ill.

over the years, the person gets indeed ill.

--------------

i just would like to let you know: i am very interested in diagnosis of people. take a bunch of pills, get sane- does not work.

some people speak ill*. just get the point. thank you.

--------------

3C as for the office and john, it is lethargy
3CA as for the office and john, most likely lethargy

if you do not get the difference between 3C and 3CA, you are welcome too. please take into consideration the sentences do not communicate the same thing, though they are similar.

* the irony is, japanese would say such a thing rather exceptionally.

japanese would drop unhappy: do you ever, have seen a person which is lethargic and happy?

isn't it spooky, how silly people can be?

MY THREAD IS ABOUT GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH.

If you don't mind my asking, what is your native language?

i dont mind.

as for the arcade and me, a reasonable amount of fun.
as for the arcade owner and me, a good buisiness.

if you do not mind: what are you looking for in this thread.

Do you mind telling us what your native language is?

Or maybe you wish to be asked more directly.....

What is your native language?

ナ?Oツ坂??thank you for asking. none available.
ナ?Oツ坂??thank you for asking. none available.
ナ?Oツ坂??thank you for asking. none available.

day by day, time by time, in my humble most likely honourful opinion,
an amount of questions is answered.

i do not understand which service do you offer.
my service is towards people who understand and like it.
i have made up this thread.

if you get personal, this is not necessary.
if it does not suit you, go where it suits you more.
i am sorry, none available.

we have a tread "where are you from".

the posts are developed unecessary traffic along a communication line.
thank you for giving an example.

congrulations for the nice time you had at the xxxxxxx site with ..... from .............

thank you for letting me know in the public.

i am not responsible for you.

I asked what your native language is. I suppose I have to explain to you why the question is relevant to this thread.

You have said that this thread is about having a good command of English. Yet your English appears to be generated by some third-rate translation software. More often than not it is incomprehensible.

you figured out how i work.
i wrote the translation software myself.

under circumstances you already know i am german.
my sentences are too long.

i have learned now: "be" and "is" are not necessary.
and if, to be used in exceptional cases.

however, i do not write:

everybody must... everybody knows... we all know...
nobody cares about... nobody knows...
i can not...
you must...

everybody/nobody are groupers.
can not/must not/i forbid you are denyers.
you must remember: this is a holder.

groupers, denyers and holders are generating all sort of spooks.
they can cause serious illness over the years. mental and physical.

a parents makes a mistake in education, if these sentences are repeated and repeated, over and over again.

i hope these sentences are most likely english.
this is because i do not understand german.
thank you, and ask questions please.

i had troubles in my youth- especially with teachers. the idea to teach myself is rather abhorrent to me.

unless you are looking for programming instructions. but that's the buisiness of a few.

by the way i have read about these things, it is not just personal experience.
