I did some research on www.nationmaster.com about Japan, and I came across some pretty clear results..

- Japanese natives would be the most less proud of their nationality (from a list of 17 advanced countries). This is probably the result of the somewhat shamefull history of Japan before and during WW II.

- The most undesirable neighbour for a Japanese native would be a homosexual, and also in this section they have the highest score taken from 16 countries.

- Car Theft in Japan is the 3rd highest of the world but knowing that France is only slightly behind (and compare both population sizes), you may say its a pretty low score.

- Students in Japan would be the most quiet ones (results from 17 countries)

- Soft drink consumption is the lowest in Japan (18 countries)

- Breast cancer incidents (26 countries) and Heart disease deaths (26 countries) are the lowest in Japan.

- Obesity is lowest in Japan (29 countries)

- The amount of people that are prepared to fight for their country is the lowest in Japan (17 countries). A total different point of view then there was in Japan 60 years ago, just think about the kamikaze fighters.

- The amount of total crime victims is the lowest in Japan (20 countries)

- teenage birth rate is the 2nd lowest in Japan (28 countries)

Although the Japanese gouvernment are trying to hide some historical facts of Japan, it seems that the natives are aware of the horrors. I cant imagine that there is another reason why they wont be proud of their nationality.

For your further field reaserch, I am sometimes surprised to see some people say Japanese claims to be victimized too much upon WWII, such as A-bombs.
So I highly recommend that you should just go to see Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum where there is nothing "US vs. Japan", nothing hostlile, nothing victimized, nothing to agitate "revenge". The museums incl. the infamous one at Yasukuni silently ask us what the war was for or just tell the war is terrible or horrible.
If possible, try to ask the people what they feel after seeing the museums.

It might be interesting when you also see the war museum in Korea or China. You can find "the evil vs. us" mentality there. It is likely that I felt so, because I've heard tons of hypocracy "we forgive, but never forget" from certian Asian countries than you.

Some random numbers, but what's the focus of the thread, I wonder?☝

天は2物を与えず、というように、なかなか完璧な国はないですね。

日本人はブス率が高いけどデブも少ない。
ロシア人はブス率が低いけどデブも多い(半分はデブ?)。

You can't have cake and eat it.

Japanese: High in "busu" rates, but low in "debu" rates.
Russian: Low in "busu" rates, but VERY high in "debu" rates.
