Post your arts & crafts!

In school, we have to take sewing, and I made a pillow. It's the Japanese flag, with Japanese in the back...Please tell me what you think! ^^

Excellent job, Tomii-kun! I like the kanji side very much! 👍

OK, mine is these. ツ?ォ

Hm drawings I guess. { it's sort of anime because I watched those all day long as a kid!:P].

Some nice work there folks. It's always a wholesome thing to create, and it doesn't always matter how 'good' (a somewhat relative term, anyway) it may or may not be, but putting ones heart into it, putting the 'self' into it as a means of expression.

I was a little surprized that a new thread had been started on it, but, then again, maybe it's time to do so? When time allows, I may well post something here too...I've been thinking about the word 'art' versus the word 'craft' and considering whether that would include some, well, basically carpentry work, that I've done--for example could that be called a work of art? a craft? I'll keep thinking. . .

You did a good job there Tomii515 san! And, now, when you sleep on it, your head will be in Japan, and your feet in the USA.... Keep up the good work !! 👍

Thank you, and I'm glad you liked it ^^

Holy Cow!! That was awesome, leon!

Your Japanese sounds perfect! 👍

I like your question, Mars Man! It made me think.

To me the word "Art" has such a broad meaning, and things that are not even visible could be considered as a form of art; a thought process or a philosophy are good examples of invisible art.

It is hard to give precise definitions to those two words, 'art & craft', and I think they sort of intertwine. Carpentry work you mentioned could be a craft work as it requires skilled hands and a certain degree of accuracy, which you don't always need to create an art work, of course when the finished result has a beauty in it, I would call it "a piece of art".

Thanks for your thoughts there misa j. san !! I have come so close to the decision that a portion of that carpentry work could be so close to an art form, that I may very well post it.
What I did, was create a room out of an open space in the dozo, and the design and the selves, the cabinet, the door all involved some artistic consideration. Only, now, I'm not sure which of the two areas I should post it in.

Thanks for your thoughts !! MM

That was nice !! Please do PM me and let me know how to do that and I'll put a song or two of mine--not in Japanese though--as a work of art too; because I do compose and play music on the guitar too. And I agree, that was very good Japanese...better than mine I'd think !! MM

Haha!! I can't believe I got some positive reactions!! I like singing, but I think I am very bad at it, so I thought I'd make a not-so-serious version, to cover it up. 😊

I'd love to hear other people's songs too, so instead of PMing, here is how I did it.
  1. Download Audacity
  2. Be sure to download the MP3 encoder too
  3. Install, follow instructions (be sure to install the MP3 encoder too)
  4. Record something (the interface is really user-friendly)
  5. Encode to MP3 (the first time it'll ask you where you put the dll-file, you'll notice)
  6. Upload (I uploaded it to my personal webspace on my ISP)
  7. Create a post on JREF with a link to the music file
That's about it really. Easy does it!! 👍

Ow, and about my Japanese, yeah well I grew up talking Japanese so it is near-perfect. When Japanese people hear me talking without seeing me they often think I'm Japanese. 😊

You have some really nice works, Tomii! 👍 I love your cushion. And Kyoko-san, those dogs are so cute! 😆

Ah, it is interesting, the distinction (or lack of) between 'arts' and 'crafts'. I tend to subscribe to the early 20th-century school of thought that doesn't wish to make a distinction between the two. :haihai: For a long time crafts were considered as somehow 'less' than the arts, or less 'artistic' in some way... personally I don't believe that... I think it entirely depends on certain things, and there is just as much 'art' in 'craft', and vice versa! *confusion XD* :D

I think it is partly to do with what the artist is trying to communicate in their work. For example, on looking at a 'great' painting, you are stirred to a lot of emotions and thoughts, as well as simply admiration for the techniques. So it is not just that the artist wants you to look and say 'see how well it's made!', but s/he wants you to feel something else, something that is beyond that but more like an emotion that s/he was trying to communicate. And this could be done through any medium - it could be a 'traditional' oil painting, or a carving, or a building, or a piece of sewing, or a stage performance, or a matchstick model...

So, something that is traditionally thought of as 'high art', such as an oil painting, could actually be 'just craft'. If it's a boring, unmoving work which only serves to show off the painter's skill in putting paint onto canvas to replicate something, then maybe it's a great example of craft, but it isn't 'art'. On the other hand, a shop window display that is not just a collection of objects but a scene that strongly evokes emotions and atmosphere in its use of depth, colour and composition, is more a work of art than the well-crafted painting.

Does any of that make sense at all?! 😌

I haven't had time to make any drawings for quite a while, because of working on my stage scenes and costumes (I will certainly post photos of these in December! :) ), but this is my most recent; I was attempting a kind of pared down Art Nouveau style a la Aubrey Beardsley but ended up making a drawing in the style of my father, which rather freaked me out! ☝

Wow Rudel, I love your model! Very nice! 👍 I used to make models too, so did my father but we didn't use a spray paint... I think the scale was too small for that, because there would have been so many details to mask. Spray paint is definitely the best for a silver finish, though, because a paint brush leaves marks in it. I never made a plane that was silver! I used to like using a brush to give my machines a 'weathered' look especially behind the exhausts and gun ports.

*sigh* that has made me want to make models again... 😊... I'm sad that I don't have time right at the moment. Maybe after Christmas I'll be able to start it again!:p

Tomii, I love your cushion, it is a really classy design. :-) I made a cushion cover once! 😊 yes, only once, haha. Maybe I should post a picture of it in here. 😆

Leonmarino, I am really sad but I can't watch your thing while I'm at work :( I will have to go home and watch it! I want to hear!

Recently I've started using FL Studio to construct music; I am only playing around at the moment, I am currently having fun making a slightly medieval-sounding thing. If it's any good when I have finished I will post it, but right now it is 8 seconds very playful amateur! 😊 😊

HAHA, I am laughing my *** of here Leon! thanks for sharing!!!!

I've merged the threads and put it in Chit Chat.

Great work guys! I love your puppies Kyoko - since I work with beads I know how much work must have gone into them. They're so cute!

Great work guys!

Thanks Tsyoiko chan !! One less thing in life for me to worry about now !! OK leonmarino san !! I'll get started on that in the fairly near future--hopefully in time for the year end, or early in '07--come to think of it, that might even be better timing...

Kinsao chan !! As usual, top of the art art!!! I'd have do a lot more practicing to even get near that much control again. And I did understand what you said about the art .vs. craft thing--and that's pretty much how I feel about it too. GREAT !! I'll be showing some of the craft work that I did in bringing that room into existence. 👍 😌 :-) 🙂
