After one year here in Uk, my design project about Japanese culture is going to make a curtain call. Although some of my design is still on the way to be more refined, I am really glad to put my project brief here, and looking forwards to your assessment and opinions.
I am going to set a poll here to easy your assessments and I will them it as a important part of work evaluation. You can make multiply choices.

project brief-changable cockpit

This is a design project about Japanese culture, through the design process, I try to understand how to handle a cultural design case and how to make a balance between local culture and popular globalization.
In this design, a car is divided into two basic parts-- cockpit (driving room) and energy base. The energy base is a dynamic supplier as normal but the cockpit can be changed for certain reasons.

Design brief-different cockpits and "club stations"

Here are some different cockpits in same scale, the chassises (dynamic base) are all the same.


Meanwhile, the whole system functions like a club, when you buy a car, you will become a club member at the same time. Then any time if you want, you can drive in and get cockpit changing in the "club stations" which scatter around the cities like gas stations.

In the "club station", a professional changing service is supplied, so whole process won't take you minutes.

Certain cockpit focus on certain activities and phenominon in reflection of Japanese culture. Below is three examples:


Cockpit one-for Japanese business men

Japanese business men are working in the most intensive working environment in the world. Overwork is so common for them. Anyway, human-being are not robots. People need release themselves when they are under high pressure.
Meanwhile, going back home too early is a kind of shame for Japanese business men, and they prefer to hang about outside when there are not actually extra works to do.
This cockpit is especially designed for them. solo use, full entertainment and relax. The only aim is relax them from whole day's terrible works and go home relaxed but not tired, sleepy or drunkly.

The first image below is the general view about the shape of the car.

The second one is the layout inside the car. There are desk and storage. Meanwhile, a soft pad could be rolled out (detail on the up-left corner) and fixed by several fixer(detail on the up-right corner) to form a bed. The seat can be changed among positions and angles(detail on the bottom).

The third one is the state for entertainment.

This is second cockpit idea for camping as whole family in some certain time such as cherry blossom. A small TATAMI room is designed here and people can have lots of fun here as a family and meanwhile enjoy leisure time through a Japanese way.

1st: On friday, the host drive home with his solo-use car from office.

2ed: As whole family decide to make a camping in the weekend, he drive his car to the "club station" and get a change to a camping cockpit first.

3rd: Then he drive back home with a camping car to pick up his family.

4st: Go to the out-skirt of the city.

project brief-cockpits 3-for Japanese seniors

As a discussion several weeks ago, there is a hierarchy phenomenon in japan betwenn juniors and seniors. Inside a car, the senior always sit farthest away from the entrance.
Anyway, seniors are not very good to move their body through the longest way to their seats. So the cockpit here especially design for this situation, the two seats on the way to the most inside seat can be turn over to make a wide access for seniors.

So each family has more than one pod they can change depending on their activity / preference? I think your idea and design looks very good on paper and the club idea is novel, but will Japanese families want to use used pods?

For me at least, my car is a personal thing. The space becomes an extension of my living space. I know I would relate differently to it if I knew everyone on the block or neighborhod could come and use my car for whatever purpose they wanted whenever it was available. By the same token, I would relate to a communal car differently and perhaps (sadly enough) not use it with as much care as my own vehical.

In a country that refuses to use washed and sterilized waribashi, and holds a special place in its collective heart for cleanliness, newness, and various conceptions of purity, how do you propose to approach convincing the public to take home a used pod?

note: this is arguably a little different than a used car that has had maybe one or two prior owners. The idea seems to be you change pods multiple times in a single week or month depending on how you use it - ie you will rarely get the same pod - and who knows where it has been in the meantime
