Although a majority of Japanese believe Sino-Japanese relations are "important," Chinese and Japanese hold very negative views of each other (87.7% and 89% respectively).

Key Findings from the Joint Sino-Japanese Public Opinion Poll

The 2023 joint poll by Genron NPO and the China International Communications Group revealed a significant decline in Chinese public opinion towards Japan.

Negative perceptions of Japan:
  • Record-high negative sentiment: 87.7% of Chinese respondents held a "bad" or "relatively bad" impression of Japan.
  • Dominant factor: the Senkaku Islands dispute: 45.5% of Chinese respondents attributed their negative views to the territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands.
  • Rising importance of online information: 63.7% of Chinese respondents primarily rely on the Internet for information about Japan, amplifying negative narratives.
Declining positive sentiment:
  • Sharp drop in favourable views: only 12.3% of Chinese respondents held a "favourable" or "relatively favourable" impression of Japan, a 24.7-point decline from the previous year.
  • Diminished importance of bilateral ties: A record-low 26.3% of Chinese respondents viewed Sino-Japanese relations as important.
Comparative perspective:
  • Persistent negative views in Japan: While Japan's negative sentiment toward China decreased slightly, it remained high at 89.0%.
  • Diverging priorities: While Chinese respondents cited the Fukushima water discharge as a significant issue, Japanese respondents prioritised the Senkaku Islands dispute.
These findings underscore the strained state of Sino-Japanese relations, characterised by mutual distrust and negative perceptions. China's increasing reliance on online information has exacerbated the situation, as it can amplify misinformation and fuel nationalist sentiment.

And yet, record numbers of Chinese tourists flood Japan:

If you've been watching YouTube about the Chinese killing the Japanese army there are a lot of YouTube videos now they're really pushing it so it may have a lot to do with the anti-japanese from the Chinese point of view but it has a long history of the Japanese abusing the Chinese.
