MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2009: Post Application

Hi everyone,

Its exciting how everyone is preparing for the trip. I don't think it'll be this "meriah" in october. :P

Neway, my main intent of posting is to thank kouki for answering my question on who to address the acceptance letter to. Sorry for the delay in expressing my gratitude - i get really busy at work and so I don't post much. and while i'm thanking kouki, i may as well say thanks to everyone else who's answered my questions at one point or another. For example, those who answered my question on sui to bak fot (correct ka?), thanks a lot.

To wkl, hello!! I'll try to answer your questions.

1) I think the advantages to the scholarship are pretty apparent. Japan is an expensive place to study in. Also, i really liked the fact that I get to study Japanese for 6 months 1st. I don't know though if you already know Japanese so this might not be such a big deal to you.

2) I think you do need to sit for the exams held by the embassy. Obtaining an acceptance letter indicates acceptance by the university. It has nothing to do with the nomination by the embassy. The embassy will nominate you based on the test results and the interview. While it is no doubt an advantage that you already have an acceptance letter, you still need to go through both the test and the interview.

3) Regarding the study plan, i think it depends. Did you not discuss a research topic with your professor when u asked him to be your supervisor? If you have not, then u should discuss it with your professor. For me, i proposed a topic which my professor accepted. I haven't really heard of anyone asking the professor for a topic although i have heard of some of the scholars here having their research topic put aside and having their professors suggest a topic. But in all cases that i know, the applicants have suggested the topics first. But since u know the professor and have worked with him, i do not see the harm in asking for his advice.

If you are asking on what to write for the study program, i can only tell you what i did. I don;t believe there is a set format though. what i did is include my objective, methodology of research and a timeline that outlines how long each step in my research should take. I also explained why my research is important and why japan would be the place to do it.

Hope it helps and all the best.

Oops, sorry, i didn't see menrui's post. :P

Thanks to clockworkorange for replying me!!

For your information, since i know the Professor quite well and met him already, so he just straight away accept me as research student in his university without sending the proposal to him.

I think i will email and ask him for the research topic, but i just wonder izzit the correct procedure to do so?

Anyway, i will try my best in applying MEXT, although the application is quite competitive, however i still hope that i gt chance to further my studies in japan later!:)

Hi all,
really nice to meet so many ppl here especially from Malaysia!
i am also going to apply MEXT this year and from engineering background as well!
from you all information, during the time in university, i have a chance to work as research assistant with my lecturer and with a professor from a japanese university.
recently, i have sent email to that professor and he has agreed to accept me to do master under his supervision.
hence, i would like to ask that do i have any advantages if i apply for MEXT scholarship?
Do i still need 2 sit for the exams which conducted by the embassay even though i had obtain the letter of acceptance?
Besides, regarding to the field of study and study program in Japan, can i ask professor there to send me a sample or i need to create a new topic by my own?
i now feel really headache abt it especially is the study program part, i really hope that somebody who had obtained the scholarship can give me a hint of it!!
Thanks!

Hi,

Having the prof accepting you does not give u shorcut to the application.. The only advantage u get is when u haf to apply for the letter of acceptance from univeersity which many of us haf problem... since the prof accepted u,if u make it to that stage its gonna be an easy step for you.. also about the proposal, just write up what project u going to do and how u gonna do it and the advatagem objective and other stuff u can think of... no specific format... more important is the interview when they ask u about your project u need to know how to explain to them.. good luck :p

Malaysians from Penang

Hi for those who are from Penang,
Are you going to take bus from Penang to KL on 31 March?
How many of you depart from Penang island on that day?
I think I might want to join you.

My parents going wif me to the party as well so we driving down from penang... If there's space u can follow us but i think we will be going down few days earlier..

How come suddenly so many people from penang? Who actually from penang?

I am from Penang as well! :-) . Will be departing one day earlier I suppose. 31st is kinda too rush.

I don't think there is any bus from Penang departing in the morning? It takes about 4-5 hours to reach KL. I don't think you can depart on the day itself. The latest bus you should get onto, is the mid-night bus to KL. But when you reach in KL, it would be 4-6am, which you would not know what to do at that time. ☝

I am leaving earlier to KL too...

Anyway, will just wearing long sleeve shirt and slack do for business attire?

yup i just plan to wear normal shirt and slack.. the normal formal attire..nothing fancy.. lol..:-)

You're departing Malaysia for Japan on the 31 st ???!!! is it that soon ! I was only informed that I will be leaving in the first week of April but no specific dates. does anyone else know their departure date ?

Hi everyone,

I`m from Australia, going to Shizuoka Prefectural University in April.

In response to the question from SilverPenciled, I`ve also only been told the week of my departure with no specific date yet. I`ve been on a few different scholarships to Japan before with the government etc. and they`ve always only confirmed my departure date 1-2 weeks in advance, so don`t get too worried about not being informed yet hehe...I think the Malaysians are talking about leaving on the 31st to attend a sending-off party that their embassy is holding for them.

A question for anyone going to a university in Nagoya/Tokai area (seems like there are a few of you), has anyone arranged to arrive at Chuubu International Airport in Nagoya instead of Narita Airport? Or is anyone planning to request arrival there? This airport is much closer to Shizuoka than Narita, and looks like there`s a direct bus from the airport to the train station near my apartment, so I was considering making a request to arrive in Nagoya instead. Anyone know if this would be possible?

well i remember reading somewhere that they'll send you to the closest international airport to your city. but, if i were you i'd also send an email to whom ever was helping you out at the embassy and ask if you can request the chiba airport.

and wow the sending off party is kinda cutting it close isn't it? march 31st
ours is on the 23rd

yeah thanks, think I`ll do that...narita airport and nagoya airport are actually kinda the same distance from my city, so chances are they`ll just want to arrange my tickets for narita...but the transport from nagoya airport to shizuoka is soooooo much easier! I`ll see how it works out...

haha, yeah my embassy isn`t giving us a send off, I don`t think there`s many people here who got the scholarship, and the country is so big it would be too hard to get everyone from all the cities together in one place I guess!! you guys are lucky!!

Miss yin say i will be going narita airport but im going hokkaido .. shudnt they drop me at new chitose airport cuz when i ask my supervisor how to go to hokudai from airport he only tell me from new chitose airport...

I'm afraid you might not be eligible for the research student application this April since you've already enrolled. Anyway, check with the embassy.
You might fall under a separate category - University Recommendation.
The process may be different. So you can do some research, calling, googling around and see how do you proceed from here.

[Embassy Recommendation meaning - Embassy screens you first, after you pass it, you can apply for university based on embassy's recommendation, after that you are nominated by Embassy, since you didn't go through the embassy at any point so far, hence i doubt you fall into the "Embassy Recommendation" Category, which is what most of us here applied]

My orientation in OU starts on 6April
So leaving on 1st or 2nd is already damn rush. Hopefully nothing later than 3rd.......

Our departure day is 2nd April from Turkey. We are informed that plane tickets will be sent from Japan as e-tickets.

I haven't even gotten my visa yet...

cookie,
wow, that seems really inconvenient. Is it just cheaper to go to narita? I remember something from the guidelines saying something like, 'to save money, you will be sent to narita(unless stated otherwise by your university), and will be responsible for all travel expenses from there'. I hope I get sent straight to osaka...

yeah i'm pretty sure they'll send you to the kansai international airport in osaka

the other guy i know who's going to japan as well this year from kuwait is gonna study in shikoku ...and according to him they're gonna fly him to osaka then he'll stay a night there...then take another plane the next day...
i guess maybe if your city is within a decent distance from the international airport they'll just expect you to bus/train it and if not they'll hook you up
but then again i'm just speculating

Ick!

Though, when I went to Akita on the scholarship, the same thing happened - they sent us to Narita. In my case, there was someone from Akita there to pick me up, but I don't know if they'll do that with the budget cutbacks.

You might have to get to Hokkaido by yourself.

This is what I quoted from the e-mail sent by Ms Yin:

Students who will pursue their studies in Kanto, Tohoku, Hokkaido and Aichi [i.e. Tokyo, Saitama, Ibaraki , Hokkaido and Miyagi] will be departing on 1st April 2009 at 22:50 from KLIA, Flight Number JL-724. Arrival in Narita International Airport is estimated at 7:00am (Japan time) on 2nd April 2009.

Students who will study in Kyoto , Osaka, Hyogo and Hiroshima will be departing on 1st April 2009 at 20:40 from KLIA, Flight Number JL-722. Arrival in Kansai International Airport is estimated at 6:25am (Japan time) on 2nd April 2009.

Luggage limit is 20kg. We have requested for 30kg, which is our usual practice since a few decades ago, but have yet gotten a favourable reply from our agent. We will inform you on the outcome in a follow-up email. Meanwhile, please do not "kacau" JAL Kuala Lumpur office, as we are not dealing with that office directly.

Please note that we will not send you any e-tickets. The air tickets will be given to you in the Send-Off Ceremony on 31 March 2009.

Yea, glad the flight confirmation came.
Guess we're gonna travel in a big group. Especially for us going to Kansai! =)
That is great.
Reaching there at 6:25am is great too. When we reach the Uni, it's probably around 7:30am or 8am, just nice to get our things started.
Maybe we can meet somewhere and share cab/mini van to airport on 1st April. Can save quite some $$.
A small gathering (dinner) before departure.

wow.. looks like im the only one going to narita airport.. im gonna be soo lonely..special flight for me?.. not many going same flight with me.. any malaysians same flight plz let me know..:(

I will going to Narita also.I think Kshoo is also the same since he is in the same uni as me.
No worries, Cookie..:-)
