I must say, I am jealous that you get to go to Kyoto! I applied for Unis in Tokyo because that is where courses related to my major are, but really Kyoto would be my favorite city to live in. It is so incredibly beautiful, has everything you need from a big city, but is small enough to access almost everything by bike.

Certainly. You can save more for shopping then. No, I am from Nagoya but I went there few times for holiday and for food☺.

I got Kyoto University!

I feel sooooo bad, because it was my 3rd choice and I really wanted to go to Tokyo. I actually could write down Tsukuba instead of Kyoto, and now I feel so stupid.

Well, at least I know that I won't be alone there as one of my internet-friends also got placed there.

Kyoto is wayy better than Tsukuba, you should be happy!

Edit to clarify: uni ranking is better and if you were looking for urban-living you will be better suited for Kyoto ... Tsukuba is nice but it's the inaka!

Finally got the confirmation email from Todai about my acceptance. I feel relieve now.

There were so many information in the email, including part-time job permit, scholarship, housing etc.The most important thing is GRE.

Did you guys (especially for people who get accepted at Todai) have taken GRE test ? I have not taken it because there were no slots available in my country since September 2015. Hence, I will probably take it this year in Japan, maybe in September 2016, because I would like some time to get prepared for the GRE and graduate admission.

Anybody know what is the minimum score of GRE to get accepted at Todai ?

Regarding to your wife's visa "certificate of eligibility". Osaka "my university" has told me that they are not involved on issuing such a thing, if you want to bring your wife all you need to do is between you and the embassy which is opposite to what you had told me in the past "if you remember", please if you could enlighten me shortly what i have to do in order to bring her and by your estimation how long will it takes for such a process ??
Now, regarding to accommodation i have a plan if you could give me your opinion i will be very glad :
I am planning to sign for a university dorm for a short-term (one month), during that period i will start looking for a private apartment "by off course contacting your suggested companies". Now is it possible for me to do what i have planned ?, can i get a short - term dorm from university or am i in all cases ineligible ? if you have a better plan as you are more experienced than us, i am all ears .

Suddenly, about one week before my flight to Tokyo, they emailed me and said they would no longer sponsor her. Saying she's not a student, and making it sound like I should've known better (give me a break). Even the embassy was confused and surprised when I told them this.
So, when I got to Japan I had to apply for her CoE myself. I suggest going to this website (Application for Certificate of Eligibility | Immigration Bureau of Japan Website and checking all the required documents so that you can quickly prepare them. In the Tokyo office, they told me it would take 6-8 weeks to process the CoE application, but I received it in less than 3 weeks. Then, I sent it to my wife in the US and she got her visa shortly after from the embassy.

2) About your plan for accommodation. I think your plan sounds good. In my case, the dormitory at Tokyo Tech allows us to leave anytime so there was no minimum time required. Just check the policy for your dormitory. Chances are, it will take longer to get your wife's visa than to find an apartment. Once you are living in the dorm, you can do the CoE application and look for apartments at the same time, shouldn't take more than 6-10 weeks. Be aware than many times, you need the bank card and a Japanese cell phone number to sign a lease, so I suggest getting those as soon as possible.

I am Mirza Muhammad Waqar from Pakistan. Today I got University Placement Email from embassy. I am placed at my first preference i.e. Chiba University.

Here is the text of email:

Dear Mr. Mirza Muhammad Waqar,

I am very pleased to inform you that you have been admitted at the Chiba University (Session starting from April 2016 till March 2018). You can get in contact with them and ask them information regarding your lodgings etc. We will be asking for your passport in February 2016 and will arrange an orientation session in March 2016 before your departure to Japan.
If you have acquired acceptance letter from any other university, please inform them that you have been admitted in this university and will not be able to join them.

I am also wondering about this issue. In my case, I am accepted to Todai as a regular master's course student without any entrance examination needed. What I did was just sending all the documents such as IELTS, Research Proposal, Transcript and the MEXT Preliminary Screening Certificate. And they did the selection without any GRE needed.

To cut long story short, I think, if you could get over 165 for the quantitative part, it would do fine. For the verbal and analytical writing part, your IELTS or TOEFL would be able to replace them.

My graduate school ask me to have subject GRE test since the beginning. They also mentioned that I will have to pass the oral exam (presentation) if I want to enroll the graduate course (after research student period) :dead:
