Anyway .. i appreciate your assistance, thank you so much :)

Hi Guys,
Wait is starting to drive me a little bit nuts! Can I just ask how many people are still waiting to hear from their embassy. If you are still waiting, is your first choice public or private? And are you April or October departure?

I'm starting to worry that if we are April departure and still haven't heard, that means we did not get our first choice...

Dear friend ... From reading last year candidates posts, i noticed many of them got their final placement on February, I have an October friend batch got his placement on January. All these arrangements doesn't affect the timing for getting final results. I understand your anxiety.
So, be patient it is matter of time and documentation.
All the best :)

So I called to the embassy and was confirmed over the phone that I got my first choice (Hitotsubashi U) for my placement😅
The official email notification will come later though, probably next week.

Shall we compile a list of our placement on google form, like what our senpai did last year?:)

Same situation here. I'm still waiting. My first choice is a national university and I am an april departure.
I hope we get some good news soon. Best luck for everyone!

Hi, still waiting on confirmation of my placement. Research students in my country have not been contacted yet. All of us had national universities as our first choices and all of as applied for April departure.

This sounds like a cool idea! Perhaps an open google doc, just so we can see where everyone is going/hoping to go!

Dear all, here's a open google doc I created to compile a list of 2016 MEXT research scholars, you are most welcome to fill in the info.
(You may leave some cells blank if you want to, we respect your privacy)
JREF 2016 MEXT Research Scholars - Google Sheets

I'll try to manage file and sort the list by university from time to time once we have some inputs there.
Also, I may not be so familiar with google doc, so any suggestion for improvement will be much appreciated.😅
(Since the embassy hasn't send us the official announcement, I'll refrain from updating it myself for now)

Thanks Geminz, already filled in my information. 👍

Looking forward to meeting some of you who might be going to Nagoya as well.

Thanx Geminz! This is a great idea. I have added my info.

Finally, you are the first we have who's placed in a private university. Mind share with us any tips? Is the university your only choice?

Finally! I have just been contacted by the embassy and got my final confirmation and placement.
I was placed at Yokohama National University and I'll be departing in april.
I'm sure it's just a matter of time for the rest to receive their confirmation! Good luck everyone!

Is anyone else considering 'homestay' style accommodation? It's where you stay with a Japanese family instead of in a traditional student dorm or 'gaijin' house... here's the website I am looking at Homestay Tokyo | Book host family accommodation
Great way to improve your Japanese - the school you are attending might have some better, more local options with reputable families for short- or long-term stays. I've done this before via a university in Nagasaki.

Hello all -- let me congratulate those who have received good news!

I'm currently a student at Tokyo Tech (Chemical Engineering), I've been Research Student since October but starting PhD in April. If anyone is coming my way, send a message and maybe we can meet for drinks or something :)

I've seen a few people mention finding accommodation for couples (married or otherwise), so I figured I'd share my experience. @hojoojoh @Mjk

Tokyo Tech can place students in four dormitories: only single students in Nagatsuta (near Yokohama), Shofu (near Yokohama), and Komaba (near Shibuya), and for singles or couples/families in TEIC (Odaiba). You don't get a choice, they told us where to go. Since I arrived as a Research Student (i.e., non-regular course) I was not eligible for a room in TEIC; my wife had to stay in the USA to get her visa and for me to get accommodations. I was sent to Shofu (Aobadai).
The rent in these dorms is ridiculously cheap (Shofu is 17k JPY/mo, Nagatsuta/Komaba are about 40k JPY/mo). But I needed to move out for my wife to join me, and Aobadai is too far from campus.

I started looking for an apartment just before Christmas, and started by contacting several realtors that offer English services: Tokyo Apartment (part of Dainichi Co. Ltd), Ritsuyo Co. Ltd, and Aonissin Co. Ltd. The staff at all these companies were very helpful and extremely prompt in responding.

In the end, I signed for an apartment through Aonissin. They were able to find an apartment that suited my needs/budget within 18 hrs of first making contact; I found a 20+m2 apartment, full furnished, closer to campus with no deposit/key money and they gave me Jan/Feb rent free. It's about 62k JPY/mo (including maintenance fees and utilities). It's certainly small, but it works for us. There are of course bigger places, just consider the trade-off in amenities and price. The staff at their company speak fluent Chinese, English, and Japanese, and I believe some Korean. Both agents I dealt with were American. Super easy. I highly recommend them, or any of the other companies as well.

So, that's my experience. I suggest contacting these companies that exist to help foreigners find apartments, and in the end it's not too hard.
Good luck! ;-)

Dear friend ... Thank you for following our posts and for the concern that you show :) , i am really grateful for you.
I hope that you are doing good with your life and your study in Japan and spending a great time there as well.

Regarding to your wife's visa "certificate of eligibility". Osaka "my university" has told me that they are not involved on issuing such a thing, if you want to bring your wife all you need to do is between you and the embassy which is opposite to what you had told me in the past "if you remember", please if you could enlighten me shortly what i have to do in order to bring her and by your estimation how long will it takes for such a process ??
Now, regarding to accommodation i have a plan if you could give me your opinion i will be very glad :
I am planning to sign for a university dorm for a short-term (one month), during that period i will start looking for a private apartment "by off course contacting your suggested companies". Now is it possible for me to do what i have planned ?, can i get a short - term dorm from university or am i in all cases ineligible ? if you have a better plan as you are more experienced than us, i am all ears :) .

Finally thank you so much for your unlimited guidance :)
I hope your wife will join you sooner than you expecting :)
All the best for both of you :)

Finally, you are the first we have who's placed in a private university. Mind share with us any tips? Is the university your only choice?

The elusive private placement! Congrats @E.T.

EDIT: So I finally heard form the Consulate-General that I have indeed been confirmed for my placement at Kobe for October. The other candidate I know from Montreal was also confirmed so it looks like this region has been all settled, everyone contacted, etc.

I did hear from my supervisor and the university before hand, but it sure feels nice to have the embassy confirm it. Their letter told me that travel details will be sort in mid-September, not long before my actual departure - haha, that might be a whirlwind. I was also told to expect something from the university itself, likely a package about the campus etc.

Congrats to everyone - this is what we worked so hard for!

Hi guys,
I called the Embassy in My country and they told me that all the MEXT Recipents for my country have recived their final results except me ! I dont know what to do now since none of my universities or supervisors are contacting me either !
I feel so frustrated ! Why only me ! Does anyone have any advice or is going through the same thing ! Note: They are also signing the pledge in the embasy on the same day without me ! is this frustrating or not ! I dotn know what is going on !

Hi Titus.

Mine also not out yet because the result will be announced by batches. Some of my colleague have received theirs.

Maybe because of the university you applied to. Do you apply for private university?or your intake is in September?

Be patient. It is a matter of time. You will receive the good news soon.

Still waiting. The result might be delayed until February. So, just keep praying that everything will turn out well. Good luck to you.

If you applied for multiple national universities you will surely be fine. As we have said before, it seems extremely rare to not be placed after coming this far.
Also, it's the weekend!

Hi fellow Malaysian. I was wondering how did your colleagues received their result? Is it thru email from the embassy or calling the embassy?
