MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)

Hello, my first choice is GSFS too, but under division of Biosciences, Department of Computational Biology and Medical Sciences. My prospective professor's lab is located in Shirokanedai campus.

As far as I know, we cannot name the dormitory to live in, and the assignment of the lodge is based on the location of our main campus. Here's the thing, I don't know how they define "main campus". Does "main campus" mean where the prospective professor's lab is located (in my case, Shirokanedai campus), or the campus that houses the department (if any), or the campus that houses the graduate school (in my case, Kashiwa campus)?

Well hello there Rinx. It sounds like we're going to be neighbors very soon. Personally, I will study under the Graduate program in sustainability science, also known as GPSS-GLI. In regard to the accommodations, as far as i am concerned, we only have one realistic choice and that is whether or not we want to choose the accommodation our desired university is offering or not, as it is clearly stated on the details that the accommodation site is offering, that the final dorm placement results will largely depend on the distance between the dorm and our campus (the university will more often than not choose to locate you as close to your prospective campus as possible).

Other than that, do you have any idea of what life is like as a research student in GSFS?

I didn't raise these questions to the authority, as I have decided not to live in a lodge.
Incidentally, I viewed the department's curriculum and got to know that the master course's lectures will be given in several campuses. If I manage to pass the master course's entrance exam, I will need to commute here and there to attend different classes, mainly in Hongo and Shirokanedai campuses.

To @Buke, it is indeed inconvenient to live in Komaba lodge when the commute from Komaba lodge to Hongo campus takes 44-60 minutes. However, the total of monthly rental, internet fee, utilities and etc. is reasonable, it is about ¥55,255 / month (the 15.0m² room with bath/toilet unit). If you are planning not to live in Komaba lodge, prepare to pay a huge amount of upfront cost (deposit, key money, agent's commission, guarantor company fee, fire insurance etc.) in addition to the first month rental. The upfront cost can go from minimum 2 times to maximum 6 or 7 times of the monthly rental, depending on the room.

There are some rooms near Hongo campus that are targeting to rent to students, so the rental is really cheap, albeit small (6.6m² to 15m²). Google "部屋探し" and find rooms near Hongo, then decide whether or not to live in a lodge.
P/S: be mindful of some really cheap rooms as they might not have bathroom attached.
Omedetou gozaimasu in getting into Todai! Your gamble in obtaining only 1 LoA paid off. ;)

Hi @Nikosil, according to my prospective professor's reply this morning, my main campus will be the Shirokanedai campus. The GSFS Student Affairs Section then suggested I may apply the Shirokanedai lodge through OSTA by 24 Jan, but at the same time gave me a warm reminder. Please see the quoted message below for details:
Yes, you can apply the Todai lodge after enrollment through OSTA (Online System for UTokyo Accommodations). But please note that newly-arrived international students have a priority in selecting residents.

If you want to apply the Shirokanedai Lodge, you have to apply for it through OSTA by yourself by 24 January (JST 24:00) 2016 because the preferential dormitories for MEXT scholars are only the Kashiwa Lodge and the Komaba Lodge. But the Shirokanedai Lodge is very competitive, so there is no guarantee that you are selected for the lodge.
Please note that you can apply for either preferential dormitories or OSTA dormitories, but not both.
For detail about OSTA, please see the following web page:

Regarding the expectation of a GSFS research student's life, that is something I have asked my prospective professor almost one year ago, and the answers never change (yeah I asked again this morning).
- No need to take any class (except the Japanese class if it is assigned, I suppose).
- Learn about the lab's research activity.
- Prepare for own research in the future.
- Aaaaaand, the most important focus is to prepare for the entrance exam.

The expectation may vary among the labs, so it is always better to seek information from your prospective professor :D

Hi @ajeng, it's been a while! I hope you're doing great, how's the application going at your end?

(Personally I still can't be at ease until I start commuting to the campus in April. I have some serious VISA issue to worry about lol)

The placement result from embassy is out, and I was placed at Todai (my first choice) 😅

Anyway, there are no contacts from Todai regarding the acommodation stuff as some other members here. Is that OK, or should I contact my supervisor/international office about it ?

Congratulation on getting into your first choice! I was also placed at my first choice, which is Tohoku University under the Food and Biodynamic Chemistry division. I will depart at October and starting my Japanese Language Course in Tohoku University.

By the way, what kind of problems that may occur while applying for the student visa? I'm quite worried since this will be our final step to Japan.

Anyway, cheers to us!

Ahhh, a fellow October-departure. We will have to be a bit more patient than the rest! Will you rent your own apartment?

Hopefully we will stay busy until the Fall - I have to write a thesis before then, so I will be busy :D

Sorry to bother you (or maybe stress you out) with this question but have you figured out how you will live with your girlfriend?

The 'married' requirement for the cheap, cheap double-occupancy rooms in uni dorms is really a bummer, eh?

Hi Bella.
I believe the VISA process is not so complicated and embassy will take care of it. Just prepare the documents they asked for VISA application, follow their instruction and everything will be OK.

Cheers.

Hey guys, great to hear good news from everyone, congratulations!!!

I would also like to share my good news. As I kind of expected, I was placed in Nagoya University (2nd choice - 1st was private (KEIO)) :D and will be departing in April 2016.

Good luck to the rest of you who are still waiting for the official results from the Embassy of Japan in your country.

Congrats - I am very interested in who was admitted to Keio!

Me too, actually, I am interested in knowing if any of our fellow grantees have been admitted to a private university.

It seems that most of us will be going to public universities...

As for now, I yet to have any correspondences with any daigaku but I guess it is expected since my choices are not famous daigaku (i.e. Todai). I am just hoping that the embassy will send out the official letter soon ;)

Hey there! If I may ask, will you take the Japanese Language Course or will you directly conduct the research or Master program? As for the accommodation, I haven't decided whether I want to live in dorm or rent an apartment. What are the considerations to pick the dorm or apartment? I believe that living in dorm will reduce the cost, am i right?

Anyway, I'm still working until the end of September so I guess I will be busy too. Hahaha 😁😁

Thanks for the information! Glad to know that.

Language first - I am already a student of Japanese. I haven't been offered any accommodation yet but this will be my second time living in Japan and I would like to live off campus in a private apartment. Dorms are comparatively cheap, yep.

I guess they're busy taking care for the April-departure then. Do you know the approximate cost to rent an apartment outside Tokyo? I do feel that living in an apartment will be more convenient than dorm :)

hello every one,
Have you all received your final results ?? I have not and all my friends in the same country got their results ! do you have an idea about this? or anyone is going through the same thing ?

I haven't received the final placement results even though Todai has already come in contact with me (approximately two weeks ago) about my desired accommodation options. Therefore you are definitely not the only one that is waiting for it..

Other than that, have you guys started your japanese language training? (This question is directed to the people that don't know Japanese as of yet, of course).

I just contacted Malaysia embassy this morning. They said the first batch is out and they are currently waiting instruction to release the result. Unfortunately my name is not listed in the first batch.

For those who applied only private university. I believe we need to wait much more longer than public university.

The wait is killing me...my first choice is a public uni so I'm not that worry, but still I prefer to have a official result from the embassy as early as possible, there are some arrangements at work I gotta do once I have the final placement.

I've also been contacted about accommodation, but have yet to get any official work from the embassy. Starting to get nervous!

I also have this problem (not 'married' but want my partner to come to Japan and live with me).

Dear friends...
I hope many of you got their final placement and for those who still waiting ,, don't worry it's a matter of time.
Anyway my story is : Since I am married and planning to bring my spouse after settle my life in Japan. My university " Osaka " informed me that they do not provide dorm for couples, only for single MEXT students. So I have no option only to search for a private housing.
My request is, could you share with me your information on how to get a convenient accommodation plus the rent range. And if it's possible could you provide me with a website to help me collect info's.

Your help and assistance is truly apreciated.

Thank you again :)
