I signed up for an MA in Japanese Literature, I've yet to get any response, and wasn't told of anything regarding there being a list of shortlisted candidates prior to the exam anyway (not to mention my file was incomplete due to bureaucratic issues with my Uni. The embassy said it was alright as long as I finish by the time of the exam, but I'm quite concerned about it)
I have no idea about the competition, and I have the gut feeling that I'll be the only one there signing up for a program in Japanese. It's pretty nervewrecking =/.
Anyway, I have a question for previous candidates, if there are any. Is the total GPA from your university years important, or just the last 2 years? I flopped my graduation exam and that brings my total GPA down to 2.28 (Japanese scale), but if they only count the last 2 years it would be a decent 2.7 =/.

Ok so today I took the exam and interview! English was pretty easy, but the Japanese exam was a killer. I've studied Japanese for quite a while and even lived there for a year, but even the A-level exam seemed to be tricky this time. Also, prepare to write some kanji! I think I screwed up on the exam, since the interview was done completely in English even though I wrote my research proposal in Japanese 
Anyway, will probably hear about the embassy selection by the end of the month.
Btw, don't worry if you don't know Japanese, they told us it was optional and one guy even left right after the start of the exam. Hope this helps, good luck to you all. Now the long wait starts...

the embassy emailed everyone who got selected for the exam. those who didnt receive any email were not selected.

@Kristopher: Hi ! I have found a guide for Monbusho applicants (Monbukagakusho Research Scholarship Prep. Guide? eBook - GraduateInJapan.com) but you must pay about $ 30 to have it. It's a little expensive but it gives good pieces of advice for research students. I've bought it but I think you can have the same information here or on other websites. This ebook only sums up them and gives some statistics. I don't think you need it but it can help future applicants to write their research proposal for instance.

@Julie29...Thank you for taking the time out to reply but I'm an undergrad student....regardless some of the info from this book would be useful when it comes to the interview sessions.

Hey Everyone.
This is awkward, i think I'm the only Jamaican here. Anyway, I applied and got confirmation that I've been selected to sit the embassy exams. Application deadline in my country is the 21st of June and I got confirmation on the First of July, correct me if I'm wrong, I think this is because my folder was sent from the other side of the island the morning on the day of the deadline; but my exams are on the 8th of July, are exams usually such a rushed process? :?
I don't have any syllabus on which topics are being tested nor do I have much knowledge of the Japanese Language (I'm doing a crash course on hiragana right now). In Jamaica we would say "Dawg nyam yuh suppa." meaning I'm in a hopeless state lol. Are there any guides which aid applicants on what to prepare for? My search for this was hopeless.
Also I think I'll be attending university in my region because I'm not certain if I can take this cake. I don't see any breach in the MEXT conditions but is it okay to do this?

No, but then again when I sent in my application I was not informed of anything regarding contact, just told to keep an eye on the website for the exam schedule. Maybe they let in everyone and have the exam do the shortlisting?

The problem is that I have to spend a day and a lot of money,and I'm from the other corner of the country,and I'm coming by the car...and don't want to get there and hear that I'm not allowed to participate... Geee

For those who took the exam this year, I have a question (if it's not too much to ask). Was it in the A,B,C sections format (where A is N5/N4 and C is N1/n0), or just the one paper fits all with a more balanced overall level (It's a 2 hour exam and that confuses me)? Do you know anything about the minimum passing scores? I ran a simulation from an A,B,C past exam and scored about 242/300, but I heard somewhere that you need 250+ to pass.

Thank you...I've already looked through these though.....some of the questions I've done aren't related to my region's examination board but a little research won't hurt. I'll just have to adapt to the STPM based terminologies.

Yes, but if you get a year as a research student beforehand, you have plenty of time to prepare for it =). Some universities have past examinations on their website (Hokkaido Uni has them for sure) to serve as a guideline. International students also get special tests, so you might not find it as difficult (this depends from uni to uni and your major, though)
