I liked the movie Pulse. And I watched Ju-on (the original Grudge) It didnt really scare me but before I went to sleep I turned on the fan and it started making the noise that the lady in the movie made, and I couldnt fall asleep for 2 hours. 
I think its hard to find a good Japanese horror film. Or maybe I havent looked to hard, as anything I REALLY would like to watch I cant get ahold of. The blockbuster I go to has a pretty decent selection and this guy who works there gives alot of recommendations. But they get kinda slow and something weird doesnt usualkly happen until the end. I want something thats going to really scare me. So Im going to take your word and see if I can find a copy.
Any other recommendations? ( I saw Premonition and Infection and those didnt really do anything for me.)

Uzumaki, I know what you mean. It's hard to find good j-horrors, luckily I work at a video store and got online movie rental which makes it convenient for me to look for movies, but still I haven't seen a really scary movie that could make me cry or kept me up.

hard to find good J-horrors?!?
Damn I only stumbled over good J-horrors so far, and compared to how many good Western Horrors I've seen or heard about I will easily prefer the J-horrors.
J-horrors are much more psychologic thrilling, instead of the western ones where this just a lot of blood, a boring psychopat with childhood abuse for a killer. whenever they have tried to make a cool Character for the killer/demon they **** it up by using a real lame story and very poor actors (to mention one look at "Evi Remains" and "Shallow Grounds")
The only western movie that has ever scared me was the original "Night of the living dead" I was 8 at the time and it was my first horror movie ever, though now later when im older I can see how much it really sucked on the horror part (and actors for that matter).
Whereas to mention some DVD's I recently bought, Ju-on:the Grudge and Ju-on:the Grudge 2 and Chakushin Ari. These we're the most horrifying movies I've ever seen. Chakushin Ari especially.
*Hopefully I have seen the Trailer for the Silent Hill Movie thats being released this spring, and it looks realy awesome, maybe the Americans have learned their lessons after "Making" a remake of Juon (Making as in paying the same director to remake his movie and just add some american actors)

Misa, I know you were refering to Uzumaki's JREF name, but you just reminded me! ; 'Uzumaki' is quite a good film.misa.j said:

I like real scares, such as "Ringu," "Juon," the Korean "Tale of Two Sisters" etc..

There is something about the use of movement in Asian horror that is interesting. A figure becomes very creepy when it moves in an inhuman way -
You don't need to throw a lot of special effects at it to make it scary.
Take Sadako from Ringu;
She was frightening enough in the original, but the people who did the remake had to go that bit further and give her a scary man's face to hammer the point home. Ruined.

This sort of thing is more scary than any big slimy space monster.
When you see a human that moves or looks strangly, there is something really disturbing about it - like a bad dream.
I suppose because we are familiar with way humans behave we are freaked out when they don't 'obey the rules'.
As well as filming things in reverse etc, some of the actors/actresses in Asian horror are skilled dancers, and can bend and move in interesting ways, to acheive this inhuman look.

Rich303: Uzumaki was based on a three volume manga by Junji Ito which I own. And yeah, the movie was more surreal than terrifying. Having read the manga before seeing the movie, I knew what to expect going in. Tomie, also based on an Ito manga disappointed me as a horror movie as it was more a teen-slasher flick than anything else.
I've always been of the opinion that true horror hits you on a psychological level, not on the physical with tons of special effects thrown in to assault you. For instance, the shower scene from Psycho still gives me the willies, despite having watched the movie well over a dozen times. As for Japanese movies, Ringu gives me plenty of chills, especially at the end when Sadako crawls out of the TV to wreak havoc. BBRRRRRRR!! Ju-on also did a good job of giving me goosebumps as well.
Marebito looks interesting. I might check that out!

I actually bought "tale of two sisters" before I knew what it was, scared me to hell and I had to watch it twice to understand it. I actually prefer the Japanese styles, but now Americans are remaking a lot of Japanese horror films, and the biggest difference I've seen is the computer graphics.
