Well shiritori is normally limited by a single theme (like "sour", "military terms") but in an open ended game like this we can make up rules as we go along I guess?

The rule is already stated.;-)

Rule 1: You have to come up with a word that begins with the final kana of the previous word. You can use katakana words such as "furuutsu"(fruit) 「フルーツ」.
Rule 2: The word can not end with "n".「ん」
Rule 3: Nouns only.
Rule 4: You can ignore Dakuten/Handakuten if you like.

putrefaction, I guess the rules aren't strict, but try to stick with nouns.
ureshii is an adj... personally, i think it's ok to go ahead and use 'ureshinamida' happy tears or the like..
